Background: Hurricane Katrina 8/29/05According to FEMA,

Hurricane Katrina was the most destructive and the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history.

At least 1,836 people lost their lives and the cost was estimated to be over $80 billion.

Devastating catastrophic disasters such as Hurricane Katrina made clear the importance of communication and information related to disaster preparedness.

Mississippi’s high poverty rate (about 20%) indicates need for greater disaster literacy among state’s most vulnerable populations.
