Hurricane Katrina was the most destructive and the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history.
At least 1,836 people lost their lives and the cost was estimated to be over $80 billion.

Devastating catastrophic disasters such as Hurricane Katrina made clear the importance of communication and information related to disaster preparedness.
Mississippi’s high poverty rate (about 20%) indicates need for greater disaster literacy among state’s most vulnerable populations.

Create emergency supply kit or grab-and-go bag
Keep important papers in fire-resistant carrying case to bring with you in case of an emergency

2. Pick 2 out-of-town contacts for family to contact in case you become separated
3. Prepare checklist of important phone numbers, addresses, contacts
4. Develop “shelter in place” strategy when evacuation is not an option
