The magic of Kellermeister is as much about the characters that are involved in making our wines as the grapes, the wine and the winery itself. Being a winery that genuinely hand crafts wine in small batches means we need to bolster the ranks that support our winemakers quite significantly during vintage. This requirement is usually met by young, adventurous winemakers who have just completed their studies in the craft and are eager to experience a vintage away from their home country . This vintage saw a distinctly Italian flavour represented in our cellar, with several of our proprietary ‘Vintage Krew’ coming from that country so rich with its own winemaking heritage and tradition. Not only do these colourful characters bring with them vibrant personality, willing hands and able minds, but as the French would say, they also bring their own ‘je ne sais quoi’. Who can put their finger on what it is exactly? Is it the little things like invitations for home cooked meals, comprising 13 successive courses of provincial Italian peasant food, served with warm hospitality even in a strange land? Is it the swift pace they move through the winery full of cheer and commitment in each stride? Who knows, but it certainly is part of the magic of Kellermeister during vintage. And then there are our local cellar hands who add their own twist of flavour. This year, a cool growing season kept us all waiting a little longer than normal for our first delivery of grapes, so one opportunistic cellar hand (affectionately nick-named ‘Pav’) put some of our expectant, yet at that point empty fermenting tanks to good use - using them to amplify his rather impressive crooning. Check it out at www.youtube.com/user/KMWBV - he’s quite a talent. All in all, I can’t wait to try the wines that our Vintage Krew have all played their part in helping make in 2011. With so much Italian magic around the place, I know they will be Bellissimo! a BEllISSImo VINTagEHarvest at Kellermeister is always a colourful time of year and not just because there is plenty of activity and beautifully ripe fruit around the place.

Who can put their finger on what it is

exactly?

2008 Wild Witch Shiraz - $65.00Our Wild Witch is a refined style of Shiraz; a blend of our best parcels from across the Barossa. Each parcel melds with and complements the other to produce a harmonious and complex wine. The colours are vibrant, boasting crimson red and purple hues. Eden Valley Shiraz is the backbone of this wine and juicy fresh blue and black berry fruits with an underlying earthy truffle complexity abound. The palate is even, silky and long through a tightly structured tannin and acidity profile.

2006 Black Sash Shiraz Special Release - $44.90Black Sash Reserve Shiraz is a single vineyard wine from the Ebenezer sub-region of the Barossa. With a rich earthen red hue, it displays a broad spectrum of ripe black fruits, cracked black pepper, dark chocolate and spice. Rich, ripe, fleshy and even, this wine is full across the palate. The wine displays a powerful tannin structure, which is well supported through balanced acid and a modest oak regime.

2008 Dry Grown Shiraz - $34.90The fruit for our Dry Grown Shiraz is sourced from very old, low yielding vineyards across the Barossa. The 2008 vintage displays black fruit aromas of dark cherry, plum, dark bitter chocolate and aniseed. The wine is full-bodied with an even-weighted palate. Very fine, chewy tannins and integrated acid give it beautiful structure and length.

The lads in the cellar had a bit of spare time on their hands outside of vintage, so we set them a task to keep them occupied until the grapes arrived!

Making our own cider has been on the ‘to do’ list for a long time, but like all good things, it wasn’t going to happen overnight. Serious research needed to be done, which meant blind tasting almost every cider known to man and coming up with our own unique recipe. With the results in, the cellar crew went about their work crafting a new apple cider. Many samples were tried, and many failed, until finally the team produced the winning combination - a crisp, refreshing, dry cider

brimming with flavour!

Our new Boots Cider is unashamedly ‘man made’ with the blokes in mind – a cider you can happily drink without having your manhood called into question! Our new side project has already proved a huge success, hitting all the right notes with the crew after a hard day of paintball warfare at our end-of-vintage celebrations. Now it’s time to take it to the people, and you’re invited to join us at our cellar door as we launch our new quaffer later this month! We’ll be firing up the spit to enjoy slow-roasted pork around the fire, along with mouth-watering sides, live music and of course the Boots Cider!

Newly-appointed assistant winemaker Andrew Cockram stepped up to the crusher and smashed vintage 2011 for 6! In an innings reminiscent to that of the great Steve Waugh, the quiet achiever was making runs all ‘round the ground with little fuss and plenty of finesse!

Italian cellar hand Stefano Marino was a long way from his hometown of Vezza D’Alba, but was right at home in our cellar - especially when carrying out the daily round of pump-over’s. Stefano proudly bears the same stamp as our pumps, ‘Made in Italy’, proving a perfect match!

You could be forgiven for thinking Sean Morgan was the new kid on the block, until you saw him at work around the cellar. A vintage veteran, Seano doesn’t mind saving a few of the best jobs for himself. Pressure testing new barrels and breathing in the smell of new oak is what, he reckons, is the best job in the winery!

It’s always nice to have a female influence around the cellar, and Amercian cellar hand Amy Ludovissy did a great job of keeping the boys in check during vintage. It also meant much less time was wasted looking for lost equipment. After the inevitable “boys look”, Amy always came up with the goods - here she triumphantly celebrates the discovery of the missing shovel!

Jono Knowles quickly found his niche in the winery at the controls of any one of our forklifts. With a lanky stature not dissimilar to Mark Webber, Jono did his best to match the F1 drivers pace - albeit aboard a slightly less agile vehicle. Dubbed “Muletto” (forklift) by his Italian cellar-mates, not just for his skills on the forklift, but also for his freakish lifting ability!

Local grower Ron Schild proved he could still mix it with the young guns, throwing buckets at 79 years of age. Ron showed us all how it was done while hand-picking his 60-year-old Grenache vines near Tanunda.

VINTagE 2011

wINEry BoyS INVolVED IN CloSE SHaVEMaintenance crew members Shaun Hausler and Paul Johnson are hairier than your average malting cat’s favourite blanket, so when the call went out to “be brave and shave”, the boys were at the front of the queue!

With expectations of raising big dollars for the Leukaemia Foundation, apprentice Shaun Hausler rallied the troops at Kellermeister to take part in

this year’s World’s Greatest Shave. However, the only person he actually managed to convince to join him in losing the locks was his boss Paul Johnson – the bloke with the least hair in the entire establishment! Undeterred by PJ’s lack of hair, the ever-persistent apprentice suggested Paul shave off his beard, which he has proudly sported for the last 12 years.

So, with friends and family in support, the duo

was given a thorough going-over with the clippers, followed by the razor, and came out looking a little worse for wear. Thankfully we’d just taken a massive delivery of Kellermeister-branded bucket hats and caps, which were quickly donned by the pair! At the end of the day the boys didn’t fail in exceeding expectations either, raising more than $1600 for the Leukaemia Foundation - a sensational effort.

Clockwise from above: Getting a little bit hairy, Paul Johnson and Shaun Hausler. The after shot, enough said!PJ’s daughter Ella taking a little while to get used to dad’s new do. Given his uncle’s haircut Shauno could’ve been forgiven for thinking he was the best man for the job.... he thought wrong!

ABOVE: The boys launching The Pilgrimage Cabernet Shiraz on the Mount of Olives - overlooking the Old City of Jerusalem.

Kellermeister Managing Director Mark Pearce and PR guy Dave Rice recently returned from the Holy Land, where they competed in Jerusalem’s half-marathon to raise money for the Little Heroes Foundation. The duo were two of only three Aussies to take part in the challenging 21km event through the hilly streets of the old city, finishing in a little over two hours. While there, the boys also launched Kellermeister’s first ever fundraising wine, The Pilgrimage Cabernet Shiraz. With our winemakers making a pilgrimage to McLaren Vale to source the premium fruit for this wine, it’s a fitting name for this delightful drop. To further support the work of the Little Heroes Foundation, we’ll be donating $60.00 from every case sold through our cellar door, along with all money raised from the run.The good news is you don’t need to run a marathon to support this fantastic cause – just enjoy a bottle or two of The Pilgrimage! It’s now available from our cellar door or online at www.kellermeister.com.auA big thanks goes out to all those who donated to the run and to our incredibly generous sponsors, KSD Design, BMD, Starplex, ProWine, CCL Label, VISY and Frank Aloi.
