The motorcade—moments before the assassination

close up WHO SHOT PRESIDENT KENNEDY?

Walter Cronkite ex-amines "contradic-tions and unresolved doubts" surrounding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas.

Despite its being one of the most photo-) graphed and carefully documented murders in

American history, there's still debate over wheth-er Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone on Nov. 22, 1963, as the Warren Commission concluded in 1964, or whether "there was a second gunman," as a 1977 House committee on assassinations concluded.

The conspiracy theory is supported by eyewit-ness accounts: computer-enhanced photos of at least one person seen behind bushes on the grassy knoll at Dealey Plaza: reports of people

along the motorcade route who were "claiming to be Fed-eral agents and who were never found";

assertions that Oswald's rifle was not fast enough to fire three shots in six seconds; and -acoustic fingerprint" tests that suggest a fourth shot was tired from the knoll area. For each piece of evidence pointing to conspiracy. howev-er, the documentary counters with other evi-dence that backs Warren Commission findings.

The hour also considers "many irregularities" in the Kennedy autopsy report done by Bethesda Naval Hospital pathologist James Humes. whose original notes "were burned," Cronkite says. before his official findings were made public.

Robert Richter is the producer. (60 min.)

KENNEDY V. WALLACE-A CRISIS UP CLOSE

This unusual 1963 ABC documentary offers an inside look at how Presidential decisions are made during a domestic crisis. It was produced by Robert Drew. who was given 24 hours of ac-cess to President John F. Kennedy and Attorney General Robert Kennedy during their June 1963 civil-rights showdown with Alabama governor George C. Wallace.

Defying a Federal Court order, Wallace vowed to "stand in the schoolhouse door" to block the enrollment of two black students at the University of Alabama. Equally determined, the President and Attorney General instructed Deputy Attorney Genera! Nicholas Katzenbach lo order the gover-nor to move. When that failed, JFK federalized

Observed are JFK and his brother at strategy sessions; Robert Kennedy conferring by phone with Katzenbach in Alabama; Wallace preparing for his act of resistance: and the students—Vivi-an Malone and James Hood—receiving last-min-ute instructions from the NAACP.

The documentary concludes with footage of the Wallace-Katzenbach confrontation and RFK's reaction: and clips from an address JFK made to the country that night calling for Congress to swiftly enact civil-rights legislation. Interwoven throughout are recent reflective comments from Katzenbach and Malone. (60 min.)

❑ L.A. Law. William M. Finkelstein's funny and provocative script centers on Stuart's visit to an infertility specialist and Roxanne's growing irritation with her phenomenally dull husband. Also: Abby makes a decision concerning her future with the firm, Kuzak defends an accused rapist and Becker's relationship with Judge Monica Ryan falters when the publicity-hungry attorney takes on what could be a landmark case. (10 PM 2, 4, 8, 25)

THURSDAY

Tonight: first-run series episodes on NBC, three hours from CBS News and the last installment (for this week) of ABC's War and Remembrance.

El The investigators at 48 Hours travel to Fernald, Ohio, for an incisive report on how a factory is disposing of radioactive materials, and to Aiken, S.C., where the issue of safety concerning the handling of toxic waste is questioned. (8 PM 9, 11,16)

0 In an episode excelente of Cheers, Sam does a favor for new executive vice president Martin Teal (Alex Nevil) by traveling to Ixtapa to help set up the bar at an exclusive beachside resort. Will Sammy be content in the land of fiestas, margaritas and tanned senoritas? Is a jalapeno hot? (9 PM 2, 4, B, 25)

0 Jane Seymour and John Gielgud shine in tonight's installment of War and Remembrance, as Natalie Jastrow and her uncle Aaron desperately try to make their way to freedom, while Byron (Hart Bochner) seeks word on the whereabouts of his wife and child. (9 PM 7, 13, 47)

This month's umpteenth special on the 25th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's assassination is truly special. CBS Reports culled this two-hour program from over 56 hours of mesmerizing network coverage telecast over four wrenching days, starting with Walter Cronkite's initial bulletin announcing that shots had been fired upon the Presidential motorcade, and concluding with the President's interment at Arlington National Cemetery. Dan Rather, who was in Dallas on the fateful day, is the anchor. See the Close-up on A-175. (9 PM 9, 1 1, 16)

0 Tonight's Mystery! involves Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes in the kind of puzzler you expect from Dick Francis. In "Silver Blaze," Holmes and Watson (well-played as usual by Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke) are off to Dartmoor for a case that involves a missing racehorse—and the killing of the Thoroughbred's trainer. Hard-core Dick Francis fans will probably have this one solved in the first

" • reel, but that doesn't detract from the hour's handsome location filming, its clever John Hawksworth teleplay or the fine performances. (9 PM 22, 26, 28, 31, 62, 67, MPT)

CBS REPORTS (CC) 9 PM ~WW

FOUR DAYS IN NOVEMBER:

THE ASSASSINATION

OF PRESIDENT KENNEDY

How CBS covered the assassination and funeral

of the 35th President a quarter-century ago.

On Friday, Nov. 22, 1963, at 1:40 P.M. (El), a

news bulletin read by Walter Cronkite interrupted

As the World Turns and reported shots fired on

the President's motorcade in Dallas. Beginning

then, and for the next four days, television

became what producer Perry Wolff calls a "na-

tional hearth" around which stunned and sad-

dened Americans gathered. Edited from 56 hours

of black-and-white film and tape, this 25th anni-

versary commemoration is not intended "to make

commentary on the past (but) to bring it back,"

says anchor Dan Rather, who reported on the

assassination from Dallas. Included . confirmation of the President's

death at Parkland Hospital; the arrest of Lee Har-

vey Oswald: reactions from former Presidents Ei-

senhower and Truman, and Rev. Martin Luther

King Jr.; the Nov. 24 slaying of Oswald by Jack

Ruby—seen on live TV—in the basement of the

Dallas city jail; public viewing of the President's

flag-draped casket in the Capitol Rotunda that

same day; and, on Nov. 25—proclaimed by

President Lyndon B. Johnson as "a day of na-

tional mourning"—the stately march of family

members, Government officials and world lead-

ers behind a horse-drawn caisson carrying the

casket to St. Matthew's Cathedral and then to Ar-

lington National Cemetery. (2 hrs.)
