Many Thanks to the Volunteers! OFFICE HOURS: Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm
March has been almost spring-like. As long as the ―lion‖ does-
n’t ―roar‖, we may get on the golf course early this year.
Many of our ―snow- birds‖ have returned and many more will
be back in the next few weeks. Great to see you back.
As usual, the Centre has been busy. I attended cribbage night this month. Even
though I don’t often play cards, (because I always lose), I really enjoyed it. The
players were all friendly and helpful. The cribbage night was started thirteen
years ago by Gord Page and he’s been the activity leader all this time. Thanks so much, Gord for
your time and dedication. It’s a very popular activity with twenty to thirty players every week.
I went to Monday Canasta and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m sure I’ll go back. This group was started
by Pearl Jessup in January 2008. Phyllis Lundquist ran it while Pearl recovered from heart sur-
gery. There’s a lot of laughing and fun happening with this group.
I intend to visit bowling before the end of March.
BOARD HI-LITES
The Centre received a grant for the new tables and chairs in the coffee/card room.
The proposed sewer/water increases for Gimli municipality were discussed and information is
posted on the bulletin board for all the read.
We are still looking for kitchen team leaders and volunteers to head the pancake breakfast and
the fall supper. Both are important fundraisers.
Thanks to Elaine Einarson, Lil and Gord Page, Vera and Fred Ralke and Sharon Piechl, who along
with myself, worked Bingo at the Club Regent Casino on Sunday, February 28th. for the Centre.
We missed most of the Canada/U.S. Gold Medal hockey game and could have hit the ditch, we
were so excited listening to the radio when Crosby scored the winning goal. O Canada, Vera.
I also want to thank Jim Richardson for stepping up and taking charge of Casino Night. Jim and the
Committee, along with spouses and volunteers put on a fun night. Mike Michauluk, along with his
crew in the kitchen served up a great meal. Thanks to Peter Bjornson for spending the evening
with us. He deals a mean game of blackjack.
Remember the next General Meeting is April 13, 2010 at 7:00 PM

THE SAD NEWS: -- It's always difficult to bring sad news,
but you should know There was a great loss today in the en-
tertainment world. The man who wrote the song "Hokey
Pokey" died. What was really horrible is that they had trou-
ble keeping the body in the casket. They'd put his left leg in
and ... well, you know the rest.
A group of chess players were standing in the lobby bragging
their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the
manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse.
"But why?", they asked, as they moved off. "Because," he
said, "I can't stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer."
BRIDGE NEWS Activity Leader Sharon Peichl
We are planning a ‘Bridge Party’ to say au revoir to Bea Lawson and Lou Baker who have recently moved to Winnipeg. All bridge players (and other members too!) can visit them on the 26
th when they
come for lunch and a Friday game.
Contract Bridge on Fridays has been enjoying a lively atmosphere. We have welcomed some new players, and we’ll be happy to see some old faces back from the south. We have room for more, so don’t hesitate to join in even if it’s been a long time since you’ve played. The annual Contract Tourna-ment will be in May, so watch for the announcement and plan to join in!
Duplicate Bridge on Wednesday evenings has continued in spite of missing some regulars due to winter holidays. We’re looking forward to their return! Meanwhile, the play goes on. If you haven’t played Duplicate before, don’t wait, call Peter 642-8225, or Sharon 642-4492 for information or for a partner.
Want to learn to play Bridge or refresh your Bridge memory?? Call Sharon at 642-4492 and a Begin-
ners play date will be arranged.
What’s New in The Card Yard MONDAY CANASTA Activity Leader Pearl Jessup
Happy Easter!, Come and join us and have some fun every Monday at 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Just $1.00 per
member. All are welcome.
CRIBBAGE Activity Leader Gord Page
Cribbage is played on Thursday nights at 7:00,
hope to see you there.
FRIDAY AFTERNOON CANASTA
Germaine Gougeon
Happy Spring Forward! Now that we all have an extra hour of daylight saved, what better place to gather for a couple of hours of sunny attitude, than with us every Friday at 1:30 right after the club's lunch offering. Only those who will risk going too far can possibly
find out how far one can go.
If a man has enough horse sense to treat his wife like
a thoroughbred, she will never turn into an old nag. Marriage is a gamble.
• You start with a pair.
• He shows a diamond.
• She shows a heart.
• Her father has a club.
• His father has a spade.
• There's usually a joker around somewhere,
but after a while he becomes a king and she
becomes a queen. Then they end up with a
full house...

“Worth it.”
That's what people say. The only problem with Blundstone
boots is that they never seem to wear out. Oh,
people try. But after a few years of kicking the
bejeez out of them, they're more comfortable
than ever and still going strong. Expensive?
Nope, they get cheaper by the day.
Mark your Calendar: SATURDAY, APRIL 17TH IS OUR 2009/10 ‘VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION’ event. All those who volun-teered for our Centre between April 2009 and April 2010, ARE
INVITED. Let’s Celebrate!!
Our feature volunteer this month is Lorraine Hargreaves. She’s a very busy lady but I found her at her favourite haunt – BINGO. Let’s find out what she does there every
Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday evening.
Lorraine has been a member of our Centre for over 10 years. She started volunteering at Bingo in a small way at first but then,
pulled along by our Edna Levigne, she took on a full support role at Bingo and has been selling extra cards, calling back the Bingo’s, and helping with the clean-up for 8-9 hours every week
ever since. WOW – that’s commitment!
She said she loves the companionship; finds the people up beat, and very friendly. The one thing that she finds challenging is that, at the moment, they do NOT have enough volunteers to help out and it is very difficult to be away for any reason. She loves what she does though and feels it is very important to keep Bingo go-
ing.
This is what she had to say about volunteering: “If you don‟t vol-unteer you are missing out on a lot. The friendship is fantas-tic, always someone to give a hug when you need it. You get a feeling of family - a sense of really „belonging‟ to our Cen-tre.”
I asked if she volunteered anywhere else and she told me her husband is in Betel and when she is there she often helps others as needed. She is also moving to a larger suite as her older sis-ter is coming to live with her. What a busy, happy, pleasant, beautiful lady you are Lorraine. THANKS for being one of our wonderful VOLUNTEERS.

Casino Night, Saturday, March 13th - 82 tickets sold. From the laughter and chatter all members seemed
to really enjoy it.
Going by the feedback it was one of the best Irish Stews that they’ve had at Casino Night for a long time. Thanks to Mike Michaluk, Sharon Peichl and their kitchen crew. Everyone enjoyed the games, thanks to the dealers and the wheel spinners and special thanks to Peter Bjornson, MLA who came out, stayed for supper, and dealt Blackjack. Spe-cial thanks also to Lisa Huppertz for providing the Bingo, and to Jackie Poloski and Mavis Gerwing who
made up our Silent Auction Prizes.
Once again, if it weren’t for the fantastic volun-teers it wouldn’t have been the success it was and that goes for every function that the Social Commit-
tee puts on. Thanks to all.

BUILDING & MAINTENANCE Everett Lloyd
The Ladies Bathroom renovations are now complete.
We are starting to work on gathering objects for our
giant Garage Sale. All regular on-going maintenance
is being looked after. Spring clean up is close to be-
ing underway, grass cleanup front & back. The end
of April weed control will be underway. Clean up
from the siding and window contract will be com-
pleted as soon as the snow melts.
“Quote of the Month”
“Most footprints on the sands of time were made by
workboots.”
WOOD CARVING Bert Steinhauer
It hopefully is a true omen for Spring - All our friends that flew South for
the winter will be coming back soon. We wish them a safe trip home and look for-ward to seeing them back with us. Wishing Sharon Tustin a speedy recovery from her surgery.
It’s a good time to THANK the Friday lunch team members and spares who have carried on all year providing us with a fine lunch every week, and also on special occasions. With 8 teams the schedule was manageable, even with some ex-tra lunches. Those on the spare list were very receptive to my call, and all enjoyed the experi-
ence. THANK YOU!!
Be sure that all you kitchen volunteers come out and enjoy the VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION event in April even if you only spared once!
More news on the whole kitchen operation will be posted for your information and addressed at the April general meeting. Please be sure to read it and share your comments or suggestions with any Board member.

the comfort of knowing that help is only a press of a but-
ton away? If so then Lifeline is just the right thing for you.
Lifeline is monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Responder’s phone numbers are programmed in the Life-
line unit and when help is needed, you just press the but-
ton you wear and someone from the monitoring centre will
call your responder to come and help or the ambulance can
also be dispatched if needed. For a reasonable one time
installation fee and low monthly monitoring fee, Lifeline
will give you and your family piece of mind. If you’re in-

left to Christmas!
A young executive is working late one evening. As he comes out
of his office about 8 PM he sees the Big Boss standing by the
shredder in the hallway, a piece of paper in his hand. "Do you
know how to work this thing?" the older man asks. "My secre-
tary's gone home and I don't know how to run it." "Yes, sir," says
the young executive, who turns on the machine, takes the paper
from the other man, and feeds it in. "Now," says his boss, "I just
need the one copy..." Nothing is impossible for the man who
doesn't have to do it himself.
Man, Wife And A Cop
A man seeing flashing red and blue lights in his rear-view mirror
pulls to the side of the road. A minute or so after coming to a
stop, a police officer approaches the car.
The man says, "What's the problem officer?"
Officer: You were going 75 miles an hour in a 55 mile an hour
zone. I'm afraid I'm going to have to ticket you.
Man: No sir, I was going a little over 60.
Wife: Oh, Harry. You were going at least 80! (The man gives
wife dirty look.)
Officer: I'm also going to give you a ticket for your broken tail
light.
Man: Broken tail light? I didn't know about a broken tail light!
Wife: Oh Harry, you've known about that tail light for weeks!
(The man gives his wife another a dirty look.)
Officer: I'm also going to give you a citation for not wearing
your seat belt.
Man: Oh, I just took it off when you were walking up to the car.
Wife: Oh, Harry, you never wear your seat belt!
The Man turns to his wife and yells, "For cryin' out loud, can't
you just shut up?!"
The officer turns to the woman and asks, "Ma'am, Does your
husband talk to you this way all the time?"
Wife says, "No officer, Only when he's drunk."
Which Came First?
Eve, in the Garden of Eden, called out, "Lord, I have
a problem." And the Lord said, "What's the matter,
Eve?" "I know you created me and this beautiful gar-
den. But I'm lonely - and I'm sick of eating apples."
"Well, in that case‖, replied the Almighty, "I'll create
a man for you‖. "What's a man?" "He's a flawed crea-
ture with aggressive tendencies, an enormous ego
and an inability to listen. But he's big and fast and
muscular. He'll be really good at fighting and kicking
a ball and hunting animals — and not bad in the sack.
"Sounds great!" replied Eve. "There's one condition,"
added the Lord. "You'll have to let him believe that I
made him first."
Woman Drivers
Driving to the office this morning on the Inter-
state, I looked over to my left and there was a
woman in a brand new Mustang doing 65 miles
per hour with her face up next to her rear view
mirror putting on her eyeliner! I looked away for
a couple seconds and when I looked back she
was halfway over in my lane, still working on that
damn makeup!!! It scared me (I'm a man) so bad,
I dropped my electric shaver, which knocked the
donut out of my other hand. In all the confusion
of trying to straighten out the car using my knees
against the steering wheel, it knocked my cell
phone away from my ear which fell into the cof-
fee between my legs, splashed and burned Big
Jim and the Twins, ruined the damn phone......and
disconnected an important call.
Mistresses A husband and wife were having dinner at a very fine
restaurant when this absolutely stunning young
woman comes over to their table, gives the husband a
big kiss, tells him she'll see him later, and walks away.
His wife glares at him and says, "Who was that??!!"
"Oh," replies the husband, "that was my mistress."
The wife says, "That's it; I want a divorce."
"I understand," replies her husband, "but, remember,
if you get a divorce, there will be no more shopping
trips to Paris, no wintering in the Caribbean, no Lexus
in the garage, and no more country club. But the deci-
sion is yours."
Just then the wife notices a mutual friend entering
the restaurant with a gorgeous woman. "Who's that
woman with Jim?" she asks.
"That's his mistress," replies her husband.
"Ours is prettier," says the wife
An older Jewish gentleman was on the operating table awaiting surgery and he insisted that his son, a renowned surgeon, perform the operation. As he was about to get the anesthesia he asked to speak to his son.
"Yes, Dad, what is it?"
"Don't be nervous, son; do your best and just re-
member, if it doesn't go well, if something happens
to me .. your mother is going to come and live with
you and your wife...."
THE JAMMERS Pearl Jessup

All are welcome to join our group of avid read-ers. We meet to share our recent special reading experiences. Have you tried these odd named books:
‘Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons’ by Lorna Landvik, or
‘Who Ordered This Truckload of Dung’ by Aja-han Brahm??
Other selections to encourage you:
‘In the Path of Glory’ by Jeffery Archer, ‘Everest’ by George Mallory, ‘Canada and Other Matters of Opinion’ by Rex Murphy. Quite a variety.
Come and join us to share your best selections! We meet on the 3
rd Wednesday each month.
Well, the season is quickly winding down. The Snow-birds will be returning soon, as well as the geese and birds. All is going well with our bowling. Our last regular game will be April 14, then on April 21 we will have our playoff games for the trophies followed by a banquet. The winners will be announced in the May Hilites Newsletter. Just a reminder that the MSOS games are coming up on June 15, 16, and 17th. The games will be in Killarney this year, our team took the Gold last year (Sadie, Lil, Margaret & Elsie).
If you are planning on entering a team be sure to con-tact Vic Savage at 642-7738 or see him for entry forms and more information. Have a Nice Summer!
CARPET BOWLING Ruby Tait
Those interested in helping with the Centre’s grounds and flower patches met on the 25
th to make suggestions and plans for
the new season that seems just around the cor-ner. There is plenty of room for more so if you also want to pitch in just let the office know and you can join in. The work will be divided so we all enjoy the effort. Soon the petals will be blooming!

couraged to attend these general meet-
ings as we discuss and vote on important

THURSDAY LINE DANCE Rose Marie Hess
Not much to report - we're going over some of our old
dances - actually relearning them again. We'll stick in a
new one now and then. We're still dancing at Betel on the
last Wednesday of every month. We've added a new one
for the residents - the "Chicken Dance". They love it - and
can do most of the movements too. We found that not too
many did the movements for the Macarena. As usual new
members are always welcome to our 7:00 pm Thursday
evenings.
I would rather try to carry 10 plastic grocery
bags in each hand than take 2 trips to bring my
groceries in.

Gourmet Dinner at 55+ Recap Sharon Peichl
The 2nd
gourmet dinner on the 21st has come and gone with admirable success,
we’re working out the kinks in the program. Wray Pascoe lead a class of 12 to create a fine meal. Ku-dos go to Wray for his cooking expertise from the par-ticipants in the class. Also to Melissa Collins from the MLC for her introduction to some new wines to com-plement our fine dinner!
There were no guests this time as that made the class size a little high. We are sorry if some are dis-appointed by the smaller numbers that can be ac-commodated in this type of venture. We are expect-ing to offer one or two more classes this year. The next one is on the 25th of April. If the interest ex-pressed by members is high, we may be able to offer more and ensure all have an opportunity to attend. Please make comments or suggestions to the office so the program demand can be assessed.
5 Pin Bowling
Tom Hussey
Bowling season is quickly coming to a close with only 2 sessions remaining in the schedule. ROLL OFFS will be held on April 8th and FUN NIGHT and Windup on April 15th. Any of our spares who would like to at-tend the windup are welcome. Cost of dinner will be about $6.00 plus $8.00 to join the Bingo Bowling.
Also, full time bowlers who would like to bring their spouses may do so, same price as spares. I need to know by April 8th who will be attending so I know how many meals to order.
High scores for the month were Vince Gerwing 241, Tom Hussey 236, Glenda Milroy 262/237/246, Joyce Peden 230, Marianne Chorney 249, and Pauline Finlay 237. Congratulations to all the above.
Men are like a fine wine. They start out as grapes,
and it's up to women to stomp on them until they
turn into something acceptable to have dinner
with.
I totally take back all those times I didn't want to
nap when I was younger.

PEROGY REPORT
Mavis Gerwing & Pauline Finlay
We had another successful perogy day on March 3rd.
We were finished in time to enjoy a good lunch and
a visit before going onto other activities for the af-
ternoon. A big welcome to the new volunteers who
came to help in February and March. We hope you
enjoyed yourselves enough to come again. Thanks
to those volunteers who stayed to help clean up.
We have only two more perogy days, April 7th and
May 5th, before the summer break. Can you believe
it? The order form for April is up on the bulletin
board in the Centre's foyer. Please get your order in
early to avoid disappointment.
We look forward to seeing you all on April 7th.
Bingo attendance is a little lower
the last while, but with the
warmer weather coming and the Snow Birds
returning it should increase very soon. As I
mentioned earlier, we do need more helpers
to keep the Bingo going. We need an Assistant
to the Bingo Chair, and 1 or 2 more callers
would make it easier on the others. There is
lots of pleasure and satisfaction in volunteer-
ing, If you are interested in volunteering for
any of these things please let Lisa or Edna
know.
BINGO Lisa Huppertz
I want to thank everyone who donated books,
magazines and jigsaw puzzles to our ―Book and
Puzzle Corner‖ during the last 12 months, and I am
sure that many of our members enjoyed reading
and doing the puzzles. To keep this corner inter-
esting we want to clear out what is there over the
next few weeks. That means whoever is inter-
ested, take books and puzzles home and don’t
bring them back. Whatever is left will go into our
Yard Sale in May. From June 1 and on we will be
happy to receive books and puzzles again
(hopefully a fresh new batch and not the old ones
back again).

I hate leaving my house confident and looking
good and then not seeing anyone of importance
the entire day. What a waste.

Time flies when you’re having fun they say, and time has flown by so quickly that winter is well on its way out. At the time of this writing, we have been enjoying some great mild weather and I’m sure we all have hopes for an early spring. But, this being Manitoba – you never know what Mother Na-
ture will bring to us!
Our last regular game will be held March 26th just before Easter, and then our Two day, End of the Year Bonspiel is scheduled for April 9th and 16th – and that will be the end of another ―fun filled‖ season of Floor Curling at New Horizons… and we
did have a good time.
We will be looking forward to another great year to begin in September and hope all our players will be back and some new ones too. I would like to say at this time, that everyone was so cooperative with our Spares situation. With so many away this winter we managed very well with our regular players pinch-hitting for spares and everything worked out
just fine!
The Sign Up sheets for the Sept-Dec session will be
up, so make sure you sign up for the fall session.
HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!!!
FRIDAY FLOOR CURLING Mike Harapiak /Dennis Holdsworth
A guy is walking past a big wooden fence at the insane asylum
and he hears all the residents inside chanting, "Thirteen! Thir-
teen! Thirteen!" Quite curious about this, he finds a hole in the
fence, and looks in. Someone inside pokes him in the eye. Then
everyone inside the asylum starts chanting, "Fourteen! Four-
teen! Fourteen!
