Jungle Behavior The behavior management system used in 1A is a clip chart system which was developed by Rick Morris. This system promotes positive behavior choices and encourages students to self-monitor behavior. Remember, the goal of any classroom behavior system is to teach the children self-discipline and responsibility. How It Works Each student has a clothespin labeled with his/her class number and begins the day clipped to the middle of the chart (green, Ready to Learn). Throughout the day, students have the opportunity to move their clip up or down the chart depending upon their behavior. Positive behavior choices allow the student to move his/her clip up one level. For example, when students are “caught” demonstrating the skills of good listening, following directions, asking questions in a proper manner, sharing, and the appropriate use of social skills, I will tell the student to “clip up.” Inappropriate choices cause the clip to be moved down one level. When children take ownership of their behavior choices, it helps them to form a good conscience and will ultimately build their self-esteem. Clip Chart Advantages Students are acknowledged for positive behavior choices. They feel a sense of accomplishment when they make good choices and have the opportunity to clip up. Students who have to clip down always have the opportunity to improve and clip up later in the day so they stay motivated to make positive choices. This helps students understand that we all make mistakes; however, we have to learn from our mistakes and choose to behave in a more appropriate manner.

Jungle BehaviorThe behavior management system used in 1A is a clip chart system which was

developed by Rick Morris. This system promotes positive behavior choices and encourages students to self-monitor behavior. Remember, the goal of any classroom behavior system is to teach the children self-discipline and responsibility.

How It WorksEach student has a clothespin labeled with his/her class number and begins the day

clipped to the middle of the chart (green, Ready to Learn).

Clip Chart AdvantagesStudents are acknowledged for positive behavior choices. They feel a sense of

accomplishment when they make good choices and have the opportunity to clip up. Students who have to clip down always have the opportunity to improve and clip up later in the day so they stay motivated to make positive choices. This helps students understand that we all make mistakes; however, we have to learn from our mistakes and choose to behave in a more appropriate manner.

Attached you will find a copy of the behavior form that the students will fill out if, at any point of the day, they “clip down” to orange or red. Your child will have a monthly calendar in their take home folder. Please note the color on the calendar. The color on the calendar denotes the “end of the day” color for your child. If the color is orange or red, please initial the calendar so I know you saw it.

Our class motto this year is, “We will respect ourselves and others, as Children of God, by being kind, being safe, and doing our part.” I look forward to a year of partnering with you to keep your child on track and ensuring that all students are given the opportunity to learn in a positive, caring classroom.
