Series Description
Shirley Valentine was commissioned by the Liverpool Everyman Theatre and premiered in 1986, directed by Glen Walford and starring Noreen Kershaw. It transferred to the Vaudeville Theatre in the West End in 1988, produced by Bob Swash, directed by Simon Callow and starring Pauline Collins. Shirley Valentine won Laurence Olivier awards for Best Actress and Best New Comedy. There have been numerous UK touring and international productions of Shirley Valentine, produced by Bill Kenwright, and including a production directed by Richard Olivier. Actors who have played the role include Pauline Daniels, Kate Fitzgerald, Paula Wilcox, Meera Syal and Willy Russell. Productions of Shirley Valentine have been presented in Europe and South America, and in Korea, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. In 1989, Shirley Valentine opened at the Booth Theatre on Broadway, directed by Simon Callow and starring Pauline Collins. This production won the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, a Theatre World Award and a Tony Award for Best Actress and Outstanding Broadway Debut. It was nominated for Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding New Play and New Director of a Play, and for a Tony Award for Best Play. Actors to also perform the role in the USA include Ellen Burstyn and Loretta Swit, who played Shirley on the US national tour. This series includes manuscripts and designs for ephemera, programmes from productions around the world, publicity and media material spanning from 1980s – 2000s, correspondence relating to early productions and production weekly financial summaries. This series should be considered in conjunction with the material relating to the film of Shirley Valentine.
