From the President’s Pen It has been an honor for me to have served as
President of the Highland Rim Scottish Society for the
past four years. It has been exciting to lead the Society
during a strong period of growth and outreach, and I
want to thank all of you for helping me to make that
such an important part of our agenda during my two
terms. I particularly want to thank my fellow officers,
my committee chairs, and our webmaster. I could not
have done my job as well if you had not all done yours.
I am now ready to turn the helm over to someone else.
My life appears to be getting fuller and more busy, and
I do not want our organization to suffer due to any in-
ability on my part to give my position the attention and
energy it deserves. I ask you all to continue to work for
HRSS and with the new leadership to be elected at our
AGM on 15 November. I plan to do so myself.
You can continue to contact the President by e-
mail at [email protected]
Yours aye,
Chuck

FUNDRAISERS BAKE SALE: The annual bake sale will be held at
Manchester Wal-Mart on 19 November, 2011. We
would like to see a lot more interest and participation
this year, and definitely more items for sale than we
had last year when we sold out early. Baked goods
may be delivered to Chuck Lawson or Desireé Por-
ter on Friday afternoon for delivery Saturday morn-
ing or can be delivered to Manchester Wal-mart on
Saturday. If you do not want to bake, you may make a
cash contribution before or during the sale. Volun-
teers are also needed to help out on the day of the
sale. We received a hearty welcome from Manchester
last year which is why we are returning there this
year. We received donations from the general public
and enlisted several new members. Add your support,
your energy, and your talents to help make this a suc-
cessful event for your Society.
Highlandphoto CLAN SEAT PACKAGES: A
photo montage and album about your Clan is avail-
able from Highlandphoto. Two packages are avail-
able to members and interested persons. HRSS will
receive commission on those orders. Check details at
www.highlandphoto.org.uk; get further order infor-
mation from [email protected] Per
Sue: Check out our reduced size package for $50, a
limited offer for the holidays and available to clans for whom packages have already been done. Ask me for list of those.
COOKBOOKS: Great gifts for Christmas, for brides,
at anytime for anyone, Scottish or no. Cost is $15/
each or $13/each for 3 or more. Contact Fran Law-
son, order on the website, or buy at The Celtic Cup.
DONATIONS: HRSS is a 501(c)3 organization. A
donation to HRSS is tax deductible and can be ear-
marked as you wish.
Hiking News
Eleanor Gilchrist waited 30 minutes at the Celtic
Cup 15 October for hikers for Sycamore Falls. No one
showed, so she went solo. She reports a beautiful day,
perfect temperature, and awesome fall colors.
Linda Hudson and Chuck Lawson continue hiking.
They did an overnight 12 mile loop at Fall Creek Falls
State Park 7-8 October and 34 miles on the AT from
Clingman‟s Dome to Fontana Dam 21-25 October.
HRSS will continue to plan hikes and support hikes
planned by members that invite others to participate.
Hiking is a healthy way to relax and enjoy yourself
and we would like to see more participation.

TULLAHOMA CHRISTMAS PARADE
On 2 December, the skirl of the bagpipes and throb
of the drums will again resound in the air in Tulla-
homa as HRSS presents the Nashville Pipes &
Drums in the Christmas Parade for the eighth year.
This has become an annual HRSS and NP&D tradi-
tion and is a joyous, fun way to kickoff your holi-
days. For several years, meeting at Fast Jack‟s after
the parade has been part of that tradition. Society
members and band members dine and commune to-
gether to further cement bonds of friendship and mu-
tual support. This is a “mark your calendar” event.
2012 BURNS CELEBRATION The time for our annual birthday party for our be-
loved bard approaches and your participation is be-
ing requested. Be thinking of what you can do to
assist in the success of this event. Of course, plan to
be there and have a fun evening; invite and encour-
age your friends and family to do the same. Also,
volunteer to aid before, during, and after activities or
for a small, or large, part in the actual festivities. Let
Fran Lawson, Linda Hudson, Ken Stewart, or
John Scarbrough know what you are willing to do.
Everyone is asked to collect and donate items to the
Silent Auction. This is the fund-raising part of the
evening that gives HRSS the money for scholarships
for study in Scottish music and dancing to guarantee
that our Scottish heritage, culture, and traditions con-
tinue to survive in the future. We made enough to
fund four scholarships in 2010 and 2011 and we
want to repeat or exceed that number in 2012. We
can all be proud to have a part in that endeavor. Do-
nations for the Silent Auction can be delivered to
Chuck Lawson at his home or he can be called to
pick them up from you. Every year, we attempt to
have a bigger and better Burns Night. So far, we
have, and we do not want this 17th Annual Tribute to
Robert Burns to be an exception in our line of tre-
mendous successes. However, it takes all of us to
make it happen. We are counting on all of you. Pick
your job(s) and be a part of making it happen!
Reservation brochures will be available at the meet-
ing this month, are accompanying this newsletter, or
