Welcome.Dear travel professional

Switzerland is easily accessible thanks to numerous daily flight connections from Australia and New Zealand via Asia, the Middle East, North America or South Africa. Once you arrive in Switzerland it is also easy to get around thanks to the Swiss Travel System.

Switzerland remains popular among Australian and New Zealand travellers with more than 447,000 over-nights each year, representing an overall growth of 10% since 2010. A beautiful destination on its own, Switzerland is also a great pre- or post-addition to a cruise itinerary or any European trip.

This guide includes key information on Switzerland which you will find useful when convincing your clients to explore the country. We are confident they will love Switzerland, and they’ll love you for helping them discover it.

Thank you for your continued support.

Warmest regards

Perfect locationSwitzerland is centrally located in the heart of Europe, bordering France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein. Daily flights are available ex Australia and New Zealand to Zürich and Geneva with seamless connections to the Swiss Travel System and European high-speed rail network.

Swiss transportationA fully integrated transport system with one ticket, the Swiss Pass gives you access to all city public transportation including trains, buses and boats. Discounts on private railways and cable cars are also available. Children under the age of 16 travel for free with an accompanying adult travelling with a Swiss Pass.

Culture and traditionFour official languages and numerous local dialects result in a distinctive Swiss cultural experience unlike anywhere else. Impressive architecture from times of the Romans; modern, contemporary art and internationally renowned events round out every trip.

Six reasons to visit Switzerland.

Grand Tour of SwitzerlandClients wanting to explore Switzerland on their own by car or motorbike can take advantage of a newly developed Grand Tour showcasing the best of Switzerland with selected itineraries. More details for the public will be available from April 2015 on MySwitzerland.com. Agreements with wholesalers will be done earlier and will be ready for you to promote to your clients.

Family-friendlySwitzerland has 31 designated KidsHotels, which must meet certain requirements: comfortable family rooms, children’s menus, free drinks, cots, highchairs and more. Each one also offers professional childcare services and fun-filled activities.

Cities and natureSwiss cities are steeped in history, often featuring old medieval centres, a café culture and streets laced with local shops. A day’s mountain excur-sion is always possible from any Swiss city, often less than a 30-minute train ride away.

Page 7: 99999 Switzerland sales manual

6 Selling Guide. Information Switzerland.

Best time of year to travelJanuary and March are good months for winter holidays, avoiding the main European school holi-day month of February. For a summer holiday, travel in June, September or October to avoid the July–August high season. For city breaks any time throughout the year is good.

Affordable SwitzerlandSwitzerland is well known for its high quality standards and outstanding service culture. Prices might seem high at a first glance but the value for money is excellent. The cost of eating out varies depending on location, the quality of the restaurant and the number of courses.

Budget travellerIn restaurants, try the dish option of the day, which is usually cheaper than the standard main dish; and choose a local carafe wine instead of a bottled wine. Migros and Coop supermarkets also have high-quality in-house restaurants serv-ing anything from breakfast to dinners. For break-fast or lunch, visit any of the numerous bakers for fresh rolls, sandwiches and salads.

TippingA service charge is normally included in hotel and restaurant bills as well as taxi fares. An extra tip is not necessary, but of course always appreciated.

Value-added taxThe VAT on purchased goods is already included in the sales price. Non-Swiss visitors are entitled to reclaim VAT. For more information go to MySwitzerland.com/en-ch/tax-free-shopping

Good to know.CurrencyThe currency is the Swiss franc. Credit cards are accepted in most places and you can with-draw money from most banks.

Road tollsMost roads in Switzerland are free to use. To drive on Swiss motorways you must display a “vignette” sticker (autobahn.ch). Cars hired in Switzerland have the vignette prepaid. If you hire a car else-where you can buy a vignette at the border or any Swiss post office.

Shop opening hoursShops generally open for longer hours in the cities, remaining opened for seven days at larger railway stations and the airport. Otherwise, they are open Mondays–Fridays from 8.30 am to 6.30 pm, until 4 pm on Saturdays and closed on Sundays. Thursday night is late-night shopping with shops opened till 8 pm. However, check be-fore you head out for a shopping experience as shops can be closed due to local public holidays.

7Information Switzerland. Selling Guide.

Take a hikeSwitzerland is a Mecca for hikers of all ages and abilities. Make sure you check out the Swiss National Park in Graubünden.

Learn some languageSwitzerland packs a linguistic punch for a country its size. Learn German, French, Italian or Ro-mansch without ever having to leave Switzerland.

Mingle with the Swiss at local festivalsSwitzerland has events all year round from flag throwing and carnivals to jazz festivals and traditional ceremonies. Join in and meet some locals to learn more about the Swiss people.

Ride the public transport systemMost of the Swiss trains are scenic, so be sure to use the efficient, ultra-modern and fully integrated Swiss public transport system everywhere you go.

Things not to miss.

Taste Swiss wineSwitzerland produces wine throughout the country, so make sure you taste some while you are there. Only 2% of Swiss wines get exported, so it is a real local treat.

Check out some local peaksNo visit to Switzerland is complete without a visit to the Jungfraujoch, Pilatus or the Matterhorn. Be sure to check where your closest peak is, as chances are, you are never further than an hour’s train ride away. The mountains would usually be viewable from your hotel.

Don’t miss out on some local cultureVisit the many museums to see the old and con-temporary in Zürich, Bern, Lucerne and Geneva, and check out the hidden gem of Winterthur, home to some very fine art collections.

There is no such thing as a typical Swiss city as each city is unique. What they share, however, is the element of authenticity, their short proximity to nature and a special European atmosphere. The historical heritage of many Swiss cities dates back hundreds of years. With car-free centres, you can explore them freely at your own pace, stopping at the many cafés for some people-watching or you can use the traveller-friendly public transport system.

■■ Take any Swiss peak and the scenic trains or cable cars to the top and hire a trotti bike or bike at the top and make your way down, where you can hand the bikes back.

■■ Don’t miss a lake cruise on any of the count-less lakes across Switzerland. Enjoy the cruise with a glass of local wine or join a breakfast, lunch or dinner cruise. Many lakes also offer the old-fashioned steamers during the peak summer season.

Findeln, Zermatt, Valais

If you love sunshine, mountains and snow, you’ll adore the Swiss winter. The Swiss Alps are home to 48 peaks higher than 4,000 metres, 29 ski ar-eas extending above 2,800 metres and countless world-class runs.

For the most part, winter is also about cosy cha-lets and crackling log fires. A fondue with friends or family to round off a day of adventures, or a hot chocolate and slice of cake in a café as the snow fails gently outside the window – these, too, are among the treats that make winter so delightful.

Famous for its well-pre-served Old Town featuring painted facades and half-timbered houses, Stein am Rhein is a vibrant and very charming small town that is well worth a visit at Christmas time. With Hohenklingen Castle towering over the town, it brings to life the colourful history of this ancient town, giving the winter festivities a real sense of tradition with a medieval flair. Basel.A City of culture for connoisseursBasel is situated in the heart of Europe, bordering Germany and France. A combination of authentic Swiss quality and a multicultural population make this city unmistakably cosmopolitan and innova-tive. These characteristics are also borne out in Basel’s many spectacular designs by renowned architects. They present a fascinating contrast to the historic buildings in the picturesque Old Town and round off the image of this modern metropolis, also hometown of famous tennis player Roger Federer.

Due to its many museums, Basel is considered the cultural capital of Switzerland. In the city, you can find nearly 40 museums with world-renowned ex-hibitions – unique in Switzerland and top class by international standards. Particularly noteworthy

are the following four museums: Fondation Beyeler, Museum Tinguely, Vitra Design Museum as well as Kunstmuseum Basel. The latter was ranked 5th in the “London Times” list of “The world’s 50 best museums” in 2013. In order to live up to this repu-tation, the museum is currently constructing a new building, thus enabling it to show more works of the collection, as well as more special exhibitions as of spring 2016.

Basel locals are connoisseurs and know how to make the most of life. Fine cuisine is just as im-portant to them as art and culture. Unsurprisingly, there is not just one first-rate restaurant in Basel. Four restaurants have been awarded with up to two Michelin stars and 18 Gault Millau points: Cheval Blanc, Osteria TRE, Restaurant Stucki and Les Quatre Saisons.

The Rhine is the true lifeblood of Basel and the city’s enduring landmark. Experience unrivalled savoir-vivre: the sunny banks of the Rhine and countless boulevard cafés invite you to stroll and enjoy. During summertime, a special leisure activity in Basel is a swim in the Rhine. Rhine boat rides departing or arriving in Basel, too, are steadily gaining in popularity. The new boat ter- minal St. Johann, with state-of-the-art power and water supply, can be found just a 10-minute walk from the city centre.

Nestled in the heart of Europe, Basel is a major European transportation hub – in less than one hour you reach Black Forest, Zurich or Lucerne, in less than two hours Titlis, Interlaken and Jungfrau. Direct high-speed train connections are available from Germany by ICE and from France by TGV. Paris for example can be reached within three hours.More about Basel? www.basel.com

Lake Geneva Region.Blue water, white mountainsThe beautiful Lake Geneva Region takes in the “Olympic capital”, Lausanne, and the famously scenic Montreux Riviera. Both offer a wealth of accommodation and endless opportunities for exploring.

Lausanne enjoys a stunningly picturesque setting, built on three hills, surrounded by vine-yard-covered slopes, with Lake Geneva at its

feet. Rising impressively from the French lake-shore opposite Lausanne are the purple peaks of the Savoy Alps. Lausanne’s cobbled Old Town is full of charm, due to being largely car-free. Discover the small alleyways with cafés and boutiques lining the medieval city centre.

Along the shore from Lausanne, the town of Montreux nestles in a sheltered Lake Geneva bay, surrounded by the UNESCO World Heritage Lavaux vineyards and set against the breathtak-ing backdrop of the snow-covered Alps. A long flower-lined lakefront promenade links Montreux with the neighbouring town of Vevey, and ex-tends all the way to the medieval Chillon Castle, rising directly from the water.
