4 I Camping & Caravan I Overview
If you travel a lot you won't want to miss your usual channels and programmes on the TV and the
radio. Kathrein has been responding to customers' desires for many years and has developed
mobile satellite reception systems specially for use in motorhomes and caravans. These are
designed for maximum convenience and simplicity of control, at the best of Kathrein quality.
Kathrein does not only offer automatic satellite alignment systems, we also include lower-priced
manually aligned systems in our range. Sat-jointed masts, mast tripod stands and planar antennas
make this type of satellite reception very simple. Kathrein has incorporated a satellite finder into
caravan receivers, especially to simplify rapid alignment onto any satellite. An optical inclinometer
also supports rapid alignment on a satellite, displaying the absolute elevation of a planar antenna
(considering any vehicle inclination).

CAP 650/750/950
The new CAP 650/750 and 950 fully automatic turntables allow you to use any
receiver and any TV set with a built-in sat tuner as the controller for the turntable.
The time has passed when you had to use a specific receiver to control the
turntable, and had to go to all the trouble of learning how to use this receiver too.
Installation is child's play: All you have to do is connect your receiver or TV set
to the turntable control unit. A single coaxial cable is all that's required for you to
enjoy digital satellite TV. Just select a programme, and that's all that's needed for
an automatic alignment onto the correct satellite. All you have to do is match the
satellite positions in the settings of the receiver or TV set with those of the CAP
650/750/950.
Connecting the turntable to the vehicle’s ignition signal ensures that the antenna
is automatically lowered (to the park position) when the engine is started.
A button is provided to lower the antenna to the park position when not in use.
An external control unit will allow you to operate the turntable simply and easily
without having to switch on the receiver or TV set to do it. Choice of satellites,
lowering to park position and some other functions will be available to you in an
intuitively structured menu. An LC display gives the necessary overview of the
status information and the push-buttons alongside will allow you to quickly enter
any required settings.

The new "CAPcontrol" app
WLAN/USB adapter
The new Kathrein "CAP control" app offers you a wealth of useful functions
which until now were obtainable only from stationary receivers in the caravan or
motorhome. With just a few clicks you can configure and operate the CAP 950,
750 and 650 receiver-independent turntables in conjunction with the UFZ 131
WLAN/USB adapter.
This allows you to search for satellites from the park position, choose location-
specific setting options and conveniently sort the channel lists it contains.
A further highlight is the streaming of TV and radio content to mobile terminals
such as smartphones or tablets for even greater independence and versatility.
The UFZ 131 WLAN/USB adapter permits cable-free connection of the UFS 946
and UFSconnect 906 into the home network.
Additional function with the UFS 946 and CAP 650/750/950:
The ability to create one's own WLAN hotspot allows one to stream TV and Radio
programmes to mobile terminals (smartphones, tablets etc.) any additional router.

Planar antenna and turntable
The CAP 650 planar antenna is equipped with a twin LNB. This ensures even greater flexibility
and permits the connection of a second receiver or TV set at any time. The fully automatic
turntable enables the planar antenna to be aligned in a short time onto the respective satellite
so that you can receive your selected programme.
Satellite selection is designated by channel selection and an analysis of the SI data contained
in the digital data stream. The turntable can be controlled via the receiver or the TV remote
control. Automatic fine tuning optimises the picture to the best quality. Connecting the
turntable to the vehicle’s ignition system ensures that the antenna is automatically lowered
(to the park position) when the engine is started. The aerodynamic design of the turntable
and the planar antenna is only about 21 cm high, permitting vehicle speeds of up to 130
km/h (with the antenna lowered).
The compact design minimises the space required during a satellite search. The low number
of cables (two coax cables and one power supply cable) simplifies the installation of the
turntable.

Parabolic antenna and LNB
The use of a parabolic antenna increases the range of
reception compared to a planar antenna. The built-in twin
LNB allows one to connect two receivers or TV sets at
the same time. The LNB can be mechanically adjusted for
optimal skew setting. This allows reception to be optimised
on the fringes of any particular satellite footprint.
Turntable
With the fully automatic turntable, the antenna can be
quickly aligned onto the desired satellite, allowing reception
of the wanted programme. A satellite is automatically aligned

More and more camping sites offer visitors Internet access. If Internet access is
available for the UFS 946/CI+ the functional versatility of the receiver can be greatly
extended.
Smart TV or hybrid TV mean the merging of the classic TV with the world of
the Internet. Using the HbbTV standard allows the user to access additional
information from the individual broadcaster directly on a currently running channel
(red button function).
This allows the user convenient access to Videotext, media libraries or detailed
information on a currently running channel. Since these additional services are
tailored for display on the TV set and for navigation using the receiver remote
control, here too the Kathrein system ensures convenient and easy operation.
Camping & Caravan I Caravan HDTV Sat and DVB Sat receivers
Special functions with the UFS 946/CI+
Via the network connection the UFS 946 offers access to and reception of
Internet radio stations. To make operation and navigation very simple and
convenient here, a service is implemented with SHOUTcast™ radio whereby the
radio broadcasters are sorted by genre and the facility is offered to create your
own favourites list.
The free "UFScontrol" from Kathrein also allows remote control of the UFS 946
via iOS (iPad, iPhone, iPod touch) and Android devices. The app provides full
remote control functionality for the Kathrein receiver, with 1:1 reproduction of the
original remote control. The "UFScontrol" reproduces the Convenience EPG on
the smartphone, thus allowing recordings on the receiver to be scheduled and
managed.

I 25Camping & Caravan I Caravan HDTV Sat and DVB Sat receivers
The Kathrein Convenience EPG is not only a clearly arranged electronic TV
guide, but also enables programmes to be copied directly from the related EPG
view to the timer. In addition the selective sorting of programme information
can be performed by categories The Kathrein Convenience EPG also offers a
comprehensive search function allowing searches by repeats or key words
amongst others. Every night the data for the first 25 channels and the first
favourites list are updated automatically.
If the receiver is connected to the TV set via the HDMI cable, the TV remote
control of the TV set is largely superfluous. The TV control is based on the CEC
protocol, whereby the TV set is switched on and off automatically when the
receiver is switched on and off. In addition the function also ensures that on
the TV set the HDMI socket is selected automatically as the input source. This
function must be supported by the TV set
Kathrein updates (software and channel lists) are generally made available by two
media. On the one hand by satellite and on the other hand via the home page. In
principle you can access the current version of the software and channel listings
for your receiver from www.kathrein.com at any time. Information on what has
changed since the previous version are also listed.

First select a channel from the channel list of the required
satellite (e.g. Das Erste HD, ASTRA 19.2° East) from the
channel list (call it up with the OK button). Then return to the
TV picture. To call up the sat finder, keep the i button on the
receiver remote control depressed for about seven seconds.
Coarse alignment of the antenna can be performed based
on the two bars for signal strength and quality. The sound
output by the receiver via the TV set can also be used for
alignment. This has the advantage that no immediate visual
contact with the TV set is required.
After completing the alignment, to close the sat finder,
once again keep the i button on the receiver remote control
depressed for about seven seconds. For even easier and
more convenient alignment of the sat antenna, we offer
the HDZ 60/66 elevation indicator in conjunction with the
UFS 946sw/CI+ HDTV receiver. See page 16 for more
information on this.

Choice of reception site
When choosing the location, make sure that the antenna has an
unimpeded “view” of the satellite. Trees, bushes or buildings can
partially or completely obstruct the view, rendering reception
poor or non-existent. Heavy rain or snow can also affect the
picture quality, as can snow or ice on the antenna.
Depending on your location there are of course many
other satellites that can be received, such as: ASTRA 28,2,
ASTRA 23,5, TurkSat 42E, EutelSat 10 E, EutelSat 16E and

32 I Camping & Caravan I Questions on CAP systems
1. The message “No connection to the turntable could be established”
is displayed on the TV, and the system does not move”.
Possible causes (applicable to CAP 6xx, CAP 7xx, CAP 9xx and HDS 900/910):
▪ +Ub is present on the ignition lead (green)
▪ The ignition is switched on.
▪ No supply voltage at the turntable
▪ The receiver has inadvertently been connected to the slave cable instead
of the master cable
Remedy:
Check the connection cable and the power supply
2. The satellite search is taking a very long time
Possible cause (only for CAP 6xx and HDS 910):
▪ No actual GPS coordinates have been entered
Remedy:
▪ Enter your reception site (you need to be using the current software for this)
▪ Press the green [PIP] button
For the UFS 740:
▪ Select "GPS position" and press the OK button. Enter the latitude and
longitude of your location
For the UFS 940, UFS 946 and HDS 900:
▪ Select "Position determination", use the (right/left) arrow buttons to select
the input mode (GPS/list) and then press the OK button
▪ GPS: Enter the latitude and longitude
▪ List selection: Select the country and town
3. Questions about the CAP 9xx:
The system takes a very long time to find the desired satellite
The GPS data displayed have not been updated
After changing to a new location the CAP 9xx searches using an
incorrect elevation.
Possible cause:
The CAP 9xx has not received any correct GPS data. These are obtained
during the journey, provided the turntable is connected to the 12 V supply as
well as to the green ignition lead. This can be done however only on condition
that the complete system was not switched off for the duration of the journey
Remedy:
Leave the receiver switched off and connect the turntable and the ignition
signal to the 12 V supply for about five minutes (the GPS coordinates will notw
be determined). After five minutes, disconnect the ignition signal and switch
the receiver on. The CAP 9xx will now start its search with the exact elevation
(slope).
4. My neighbour can view channels that I cannot receive
Possible cause:
Maybe your location is outside the footprint of "ASTRA", whilst your neighbour
is aligned to "HOTBIRD". Some German-language broadcasters, amongst
them ARD and ZDF, can be found on this satellite. Because HOTBIRD has
a greater footprint than ASTRA, it can be received in places where ASTRA
cannot
Remedy:
Press the OK button to call up the channel list. Press the double arrow button
a sufficient number of times until the desired satellite (such as
HOTBIRD) appears. Select the desired channel and press the OK button. The
turntable will now search for the satellite.
5. After the receiver has been switched on, the remote control no
longer responds, the green LED on the receivers lights up or flashes
Possible cause:
The receiver was in stand-by mode and was then switched off. After the
receiver is switched on again it must perform internal processing of a lot of
data; this can take up to 30 seconds. Once this process is complete the red
LED will light up and the system is again ready for use
Questions on CAP systems
If faults and errors occur, we recommend first checking the software
version of the receiver and if necessary updating the software.
I 33
Remedy:
▪ Wait 30 seconds until the red LED will lights up
▪ Press the stand-by button again in order to interrupt the processing of the
data and postpone it to a later time
6. A satellite was found. After an unsuccessful search for a second
satellite, no further signals are received from the satellite found
previously
Remedy:
Stop the system and switch the receiver off and on again
7. The turntable moves randomly and fails to find any satellite
Remedy:
Reset the turntable. To do this, press the green button [PIC] on the remote
control, select "Reset turntable (or CAP system)" then press the OK button (on
the UFS 940 you must previously have switched to the "Antenna configuration
menu"). If necessary, switch the receiver off and on again.
8. Can I connect a UFS 946 to my CAP system instead of the UFS 740
or UFS 940?
Answer:
A CAP 6xx, CAP 7xx or CAP 9xx can be connected. However the UFS 946
must be running software version V 2.00 or higher. If a UFS 946 is connected
instead of a UFS 740/UFS 940, when the system is first started up the
turntable software will adapt to it automatically. This process takes about
30 minutes. After this update the system can still continue to be operated with
a UFS 740/UFS 940.

9. I have upgraded my old turntable with an HDS 900/HDS 910. What
must I be aware of when starting up the system and what should I do
in the event of an error?
Answer:
In response to the "mech. stop" error message, check that the plug
connections are secure. Before changing location, reset the turntable. Before
starting up the system at a new location, first input the GPS coordinates. In the
event of unusual behaviour (such as searching for a satellite with the elevation
much too low) reset the turntable again.
10. I often receive the message "The turntable is at the mechanical
stop", although my on-board power supply shows sufficient voltage
Possible cause:
▪ The power supply is not supplying sufficient power
▪ There may be snow and ice on the antenna, or the antenna may be frozen
up
Remedy:
▪ Connect the turntable directly to a separate battery (not via a control
cabinet etc.). Do not connect any other consumers to this battery.
If possible, operate the system at 230 V via a power supply unit
▪ Fully charge the battery before starting to use it
▪ Check for possible icing
