COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
Dr. John M. Perkins was born in Mississippi, theson of a sharecropper. When he was seventeen, hisolder brother was murdered by a town marshal, andJohn fled to California, vowing never to return. However, in 1960, after his conversion to Christ, hereturned to his boyhood home to share the Gospel. Hisoutspoken support of and leadership role in civil rightsdemonstrations resulted in repeated harassment, imprisonment, and beatings. Despite these hardshipsand in spite of dropping out of school in the thirdgrade, Dr. Perkins has received significant recognitionfor his work, with honorary doctorates from institu-tions such as Wheaton, North Park, and HuntingtonColleges.
In 1960, Drs. John M. and Vera Mae Perkins beganMendenhall Ministries, which helps the poor in ruralMississippi to meet their own needs. Seeking to showGod’s love in action, Dr. Perkins saw his vision growinto a ministry that is known for providing progressivelocal leadership within the community to addressissues of poor housing, segregated education, lack ofemployment opportunities, and lack of capital.Currently, this ministry offers child care, legalassistance, and youth development programs; throughMendenhall Bible Church it offers adult education, a
cooperative farm, a thrift store, a housing development,Genesis One School, a health center, and a seniorcitizen facility.
John and Vera Mae Perkins, along with two otherfamilies, moved to Jackson, Mississippi, in 1972 tofocus on the needs of inner-city families. Theyfounded Voice of Calvary Ministries, which is devotedto urban families through housing development, year-round youth programs, health care, and home-ownership training programs. In 1982, they movedacross country to Northwest Pasadena, a neighborhoodthat once had the highest daytime crime rates inCalifornia. While in Pasadena, Dr. Perkins began theHarambee Christian Family Center. Harambee serves atwelve-block target area, working with African-American and Latino children and their families. RudyCarrasco and Derek Perkins now head this ministry.
In 1983, John and Vera Mae Perkins, along with a fewfriends and other major supporters, established the JohnM. Perkins Foundation for Reconciliation and Develop-ment to support them in their mission of advancing theprinciples of Christian community development andracial reconciliation throughout the world. Dr. Perkinscurrently serves as president of the foundation, andspeaks and teaches internationally on these issues.

Robert P. Swierenga ’57In his career as a historian, Robert P. Swierenga ’57
has moved far beyond the Dutch enclave in which hewas raised, yet much of his scholarship has traced thecomings and goings of centuries of his Dutch forbear-ers. It is a life’s work for which he has received ample
recognition, including the fitting and signal honor ofa knighthood in the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
“Within the historical community, the name ofRobert P. Swierenga clearly ranks among the mostrespected. Historians have acknowledged his contribu-tion in many fields over the decades. While somescholars make their mark in one area, Bob has earnedgreat respect in the fields of American economic, agricultural, behavioral, and immigration history … ,”wrote David G. Vanderstel ’76, executive director ofthe National Council on Public History and a formerSwierenga student.
Swierenga is also an innovator, one of the very firstpeople to use computers to interpret historical data. “Thus,he helped to lay the groundwork for a new approach tostudying the past and for training new professionals inthose historical methods,” Vanderstel wrote.
MESSAGE FROM THE FIFTY-YEAR REUNION CLASSGreetings from the Calvin College Class of 1953
and congratulations to each new graduate as youreceive your degree from Calvin College!
The college you are leaving is considerably different fromthe school we attended. The campus is beautiful, the buildingsare modern and new, and your class is more than triple thesize ours was. Yet over the fifty years some things have notchanged at all. The dedication of the administration, theinterest in each student by devoted faculty, and the love, support, and pride in your accomplishment from your familyare the same today as they were at the time of our graduation.
The opportunities, responsibilities, and challenges thatyou face are all far greater than when our class graduated. The world is a far different place, and life is much morecomplex now than it was fifty years ago. Members of yourClass of 2003 will scatter to many countries around theglobe and represent many and varied professions andoccupations, but they will always bear proudly the commonbond of having had a Christian, Calvin College education.
In my post-Calvin experiences, I have met, studied, worked, and played with many people who were graduatesof other colleges and universities across our country andfrom other countries. Never have I felt that my education atCalvin was inferior. I am proud that I can say this, and I amsure that as the years pass, you will also feel the same way.
Now, at your graduation, a most important time anda very significant event, I would like to suggest to eachof you that before you leave the Calvin campus andGrand Rapids, you take a moment to thank those mostsignificant in your life—family, professors, and others—for helping to make your Calvin experience what it hasbeen and for their sacrifices and support over the pastfour years or more. You are the recipient of a pricelesstreasure, a degree from Calvin College! You nowautomatically become a member of a very exclusive andproud group—the Calvin College alumni. The membersof the Calvin Class of 1953 welcome you warmly.
Roger W. Postmus, Class of 1953
Born in Chicago in 1935, Swierenga was educated inthat city’s Christian schools before migrating to CalvinCollege in September of 1953, a move he describes as“axiomatic” to the Christian Reformed community oforigin. “It was onze school—our school…. We didn’treally give much thought to alternatives,” he explained.
In his freshman year at Calvin, Swierenga, anaspiring business major, sought to drop a class, only tofind himself nudged into his vocation. It was a historyclass taught by Charles Miller, an “intimidatingprofessor” newly arrived from the American Universityof Beirut. Henry Ryskamp, then the academic dean atCalvin, counseled Swierenga to stay with the class.
“It didn’t take me long to discover that he was amaster teacher who made history so interesting. Hereally was my mentor,” Swierenga said of Miller.
With Miller’s encouragement, Swierenga earned hismaster’s degree in history from Northwestern University. For three years, he taught social studies at Pella ChristianHigh School, while pursuing a doctorate at the StateUniversity of Iowa. During this time, he was also starting alarge family. He had married Joan Boomker ex ’54 in 1956,and the couple eventually had three daughters—Suzannah,Celia, and Sarah—and two sons, Daniel and Robert, Jr.
In 1965 Swierenga’s alma mater called in the personof its president, William Spoelhof, asking him to fill infor a year for a history professor who was taking a one-year leave. He took the position, despite the puzzle-ment of the Iowa faculty.
“Several professors said, ‘Why are you going toCalvin? Why aren’t you going to the university some-where?’” At the time, Calvin was considered an obscureschool that couldn’t offer research opportunities.Nevertheless, Swierenga returned again to what wasaxiomatic. “In our circles—CRC circles—this was theepitome. You couldn’t ask better than to teach at Calvin.”
The three years he spent at Calvin, from 1965 to1968, were a training ground for the new professor.“Something of Swierenga’s versatility was nurtured inthese years as he alternated courses on Americanhistory, the history of the frontier, and quantitative
methods with course lectures on Mesopotamia, theMiddle Ages, and the Reformation. In retrospect, thistoo would contribute to his diversity in ways a juniorappointment at a research facility could never havedone,” wrote Henry Stout, a Calvin colleague.
Calvin also offered him a community where he tookhis place in the lineup of the storied Faculty Fumblersfootball team and served as a church elder. The wordsof his Iowa professors proved prophetic, however, when in 1968 Swierenga accepted a position at KentState University in Ohio.
His reasons for leaving Calvin demonstrate how wellSwierenga exemplifies the college’s mission to reclaimevery inch of creation for Christ. “I really felt called togo to a secular university as a Christian. I felt I wasexpendable as a professor and as a church member. There were so many people here who could be strongChristian professors and elders in the church.”
Swierenga was soon filling both roles in his newcommunity. He was also a pioneer in the field ofquantitative analysis, using the earliest, monolithicIBM computers to upend conventional wisdom inseveral historical fields. He rewrote the record oneverything from Iowa tax auctions to the Dutch votingrecords in Abraham Lincoln’s election by doggedlycrunching the numbers.
It was during his three nearly decades at Kent Statethat Swierenga began work on a treasure trove of Dutchemigration records he had discovered years before in theCalvin archives. The resulting book, Dutch Emigrants tothe United States, South Africa, South America, andSoutheast Asia, 1835-1880: An Alphabetical Listing byHousehold Heads and Independent Persons served as anauthoritative reference for scholars of Dutch history.“Prior to his work, nothing so complete had beencompiled for persons of Dutch origin,” wrote Stout.
When not analyzing history, Swierenga wasparticipating in it, and doing so in a redemptive way.On May 4, 1970, Ohio National Guardsmen fired on anassembly of 200 protesters on the Kent State campus, killing four students and wounding nine; Swierenga
was in a building adjacent to the scene, praying aboutthe situation with his colleagues.
In the ensuing months, with the campus and townunder martial law, with helicopters patrolling overheadand armed soldiers everywhere, Swierenga found a wayto exhort the student body. He taught in Kent State’sFree University, derived from informal campus “teach-ins.” Unearthing his Calvin College Christian Perspec-tive on Learning (CPOL) handbook, he taught a class onChristian worldview, along with classes on C. S. Lewisand Francis Schaeffer. “It was a non-credit course, sopeople only took it who wanted it,” he said.
Scholarship continued to drive Swierenga. In 1996he circled back yet again to his Dutch origins, becom-ing the Albertus C. Van Raalte Research Professor inthe institute of the same name at Hope College. OnJune 10, 2000, at a conference honoring his career,Swierenga was accorded a surprising double honor. Hewas presented with a festschrift, a volume of essayswritten by his former graduate students. He alsoreceived a knighthood in the Order of the NetherlandsLion, bestowed on behalf of Queen Beatrix.
The knighthood, he acknowledged, is a rare honor, but so is the festschrift: “Probably my enduring legacywill be my students,” he said. Both his students and hiscolleagues agree. Swierenga has supervised some fortydoctoral dissertations. “He was not aloof and removed, but interested in the well-being of his students and theirfamilies, and he demonstrated a true care and concernfor each student as a person,” Vanderstel wrote.
Swierenga’s family also testifies to his warmth and caringas a father. And he is quick to reciprocate, particularly whenspeaking of Joan. “She really bore the brunt (of raising thechildren) all those years. That’s why when I receive theseaccolades, she shares in them,” he said.
Not even honors slow Swierenga’s scholarly output. At this writing, he has published 16 books and over130 articles. He sits on the boards of scholarly journals. His latest book, a 900-page tome titled Dutch Chicago:A History of the Hollanders in the Windy City(Eerdmans, 2002), once again revisits his cultural
roots. “I’m really back in the Dutch ghetto again…. In asense, I was coming back all the time,” he said.
Paul Vanden Bout ’61The 1997 science-fiction movie Contact helped
popularize radio astronomy. It also led to two majormisconceptions: that scientists actually hear thingsfrom space, and that radio telescopes are primarilyused to search for extraterrestrials.
One thing Paul Vanden Bout ’61, an astrophysicistand longtime director of the National Radio AstronomyObservatory (NRAO), has never done is put on head-phones. In fact, he has never heard anything from beyondthe earth.
“I guess the word radio throws people off,” saidVanden Bout in a 2002 interview for Spark magazine.“Radio telescopes are designed to make images of thingsin the universe, and different wavelengths producedifferent images. We’re simply adding different informa-tion to what visible astronomy has given us. The MilkyWay, for example, is not just stars—there’s gas and dustparticles and clouds of molecules. We’ve been able todelve into the origins of galaxies.”
Radio astronomy was first recognized in 1932 as away to “view” things in the universe impossible toobserve with the eye or any visual telescope. The sciencedid not catch on in the United States until the mid-1950s.
“Radio astronomy can detect molecules of all sorts, which help us understand the makeup and origin ofcelestial bodies,” Vanden Bout said.
Vanden Bout and colleague Robert Brown contrib-uted significantly to the scientific knowledge in thisarea in 1991 with the discovery of carbon monoxide inan interstellar gas cloud ten times farther away thanany other molecular gas cloud seen previously. Thepresence of carbon monoxide indicated stars wereforming. Vanden Bout and Brown had discoveredevidence of one of the universe’s earliest galaxies.
Discoveries like this are mind-boggling to many ofus; yet for scientists like Vanden Bout they onlyreinforce his belief in an amazing Creator God.
“I know other scientists have had to grapple muchmore than I with the faith-and-science issue,” he said.“It’s always been a fairly straightforward thing for me. Idon’t think the Bible is the source for ‘how’ questions;it addresses the ‘why’ questions. Since Galileo’s time, some have worried that science will contradict theBible. But if you don’t insist on the Bible being ascientific textbook, you shouldn’t have that conflict.”
A physics major at Calvin, Vanden Bout has alwaysbeen interested in science. After graduating from Calvin, heput off his enrollment at MIT in physics to pursue aFulbright Scholarship in mathematics at the University ofHeidelberg in Germany. There he became acquainted withcurrent U.S. Congressman and former Calvin physicsprofessor Vern Ehlers ’56, who was in Germany on a NATOfellowship. Ehlers convinced Vanden Bout to attend UC-Berkley instead, where the young researcher met up withAlex Dragt ’58. Both Ehlers and Dragt have also receivedthe Distinguished Alumni Award from Calvin.
In fact, Vanden Bout is the fourth physicist to berecognized with this honor. “I am glad for the broadrecognition of the program in physics that Calvin hasbuilt and maintained over the years,” he said.
After doing his post-doctoral work at ColumbiaUniversity, he accepted an appointment as a facultymember at the University of Texas at Austin. While aprofessor there, he established a collaboration betweenthe school’s electrical engineering department and theastronomy department to update an antenna that couldthen be used for millimeter-wave astronomy, a fieldthat Vanden Bout helped bring about from its infancy.
He and his colleagues used the University of TexasMillimeter Wave Telescope to demonstrate that interstellar gasclouds do indeed collapse to form stars and planetary systems.
Vanden Bout was at the helm of the NRAO from 1985until last year, when he resigned as director to pursue hisresearch interests. Under his leadership for seventeenyears, the NRAO made several major advances.
The Very Large Array (VLA) telescope in NewMexico, dedicated in 1980, received funding for majorupgrades during Vanden Bout’s tenure. Today the
twenty-seven-antenna system is the most powerful, flexible, and widely used radio telescope in the world.
The Very Large Baseline Array (VBLA) telescope, a ten-antenna system widely scattered across North America, was planned and built during Vanden Bout’s administra-tion. It is the largest astronomical instrument on Earth.
Dedicated in 2000 under Vanden Bout’s direction, the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia is the mostsophisticated large single-dish radio telescope everbuilt. With a surface area of almost two acres, theinstrument offers access to the entire sky.
In his current position as interim director of theAtacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), Vanden Boutis leading an international collaboration to build a sixty-four-antenna telescope in Chile, which will collect themillimeter wavelength “light” given off by cool objectslike the gas and dust near stars and galaxies. WhenALMA is completed (by 2012), it will be the largest andmost capable imaging array of telescopes in the world.
With the emergence of new technology like ALMA,the radio astronomy field is constantly changing. Futurestudy of star formation in early universe galaxies likethis one is the intent of the ALMA project in Chile.
“As a direct result of Paul’s efforts, scientists in the U.S.have a complete suite of superb research facilities that ismore than adequate for the needs of radio astronomy inthe first half of the twenty-first century and perhapsbeyond,” said Brown, deputy director of the NRAO.
Upon completing his term as interim director of theALMA project this summer, Vanden Bout will be takinga “traveling research sabbatical” with his wife, Rachel(Eggebeen) ’61. During this time, he hopes to discovermore about this vast universe of ours.
“Some people have a hard time with science becauseof the deep desire for fixed answers,” said Vanden Bout.“Many want to ‘learn and know.’ But science is really away of thinking, of inquiry. We only think so at thistime. Some don’t want to live with that uncertainty.
“But for Christians, the most important answers arealready known. We don’t need pat answers to the mysteryof the universe. We are free to be curious explorers ofplanets, stars, and galaxies far beyond our imagining.”

DEPARTMENTAL BANNERSThroughout history, colorful banners have been used to mark important religious and civic events and to
celebrate the vision and spirit of the participants in such events. The departmental banners displayed at thisoccasion arise from an awareness of this tradition and are meant to continue it. Besides symbolicallyrevealing the richness of the various disciplines at Calvin College, the banners graphically represent theirdistinctiveness. Although their colors are mostly in keeping with traditional associations—scarlet forreligion and theology, blue for education, orange for engineering—their forms combine the traditional, thecontemporary, and the abstract.
Art DepartmentAn abstract eye and hand symbolize artistic expression through the artist’s sense of sightand touch. Bright colors against black suggest creative boldness.
Biology DepartmentDominating the Biology banner is a symbol representing the structure of the DNAmolecule, deoxyribonucleic acid. The structure of this fundamental material of life, thechemical basis of heredity, was revealed in 1953 and actually photographed in 1969.
Chemistry and Biochemistry DepartmentThe main symbol used in this banner is the electron distribution for tetrahedral hybridorbitals, which represents the chemical activity of the elements and their compounds. Two segments of a crystal structure are included in the design, which are also the floor-plan shape of the science building. The shaft of pale yellow symbolizes the light ofinvestigation. Yellow is the traditional color associated with science.
Classical Languages DepartmentWhile the lyre and the wolf may be taken individually as symbols of Greece and Rome, together they portray the unity of the two civilizations and its cultural achievement, theunion of art and nature, and of poetry and myth. Horace has given this continuity andfusion of the two traditions of Greece and Rome its classical literary expression in hisodes, of which none better, perhaps, than the “Integer vitae” ode conveys the intentionof this banner.
Communication Arts and Sciences DepartmentSound waves emanating from a central core symbolize communication through speechand drama. The reversal of the outward movement suggests feedback in communication.Silver gray is the color traditionally assigned to speech and drama.
Computer Science DepartmentThe banner of the Computer Science Department features a Turing machine, thefoundational model of digital computation. The zeroes and ones on its tape reflect thebinary logic by which digital computation is implemented. The changing colors andorder of the numbers express the transition as data move from input through processingto output. The white shaft and its golden sheath symbolize the light and energy ofeducation and the sciences. The flowing wind symbolizes the transforming work of theHoly Spirit as it infuses the discipline of computing.

Economics and Business DepartmentShapes and lines express the charting and planning of economic budgets. Subtlyappearing among other symbols is a cross expressing the Christ-centered teaching ofeconomics at Calvin College. Copper is the color associated with economics.
Education DepartmentThe relationship of teacher and student in the educational process is represented by theforceful interaction of shapes in this design. The white shaft symbolizes the light oflearning in the Holy Spirit. Blue is traditionally linked with education.
Engineering DepartmentThe Engineering banner illustrates the key activity of engineers, namely, their involve-ment with the design process, an iterative, decision-making sequence. Steps in thesequence, represented by circles and rectangles, are connected by arrows to indicate themovement from the initial problem statement to final solution. Two-way arrows suggestthe possibility of sequence reversal. Orange traditionally designates engineering.
English DepartmentThe two main symbols, the lion and the eagle, represent England and the United Statesof America. The lozenge pattern in the background expresses the pageantry of Englandduring the development of the English language.
French DepartmentThe banner of the Department of French features the Coq Gaulois, long a nationalemblem of France, and the Arch of Triumph, a symbol of French patriotism. The cock, traditionally the Christian symbol for watchfulness, has been adopted as its symbol by anation which since its inception has been one of the important cradles of Christianthought and practice. The colors of the national flag are represented by the Coq Gaulois.
Geology, Geography, and Environmental Studies DepartmentEarthkeeping, the human community’s care for God’s earth, is symbolized in the bannerfor the Department of Geology, Geography, and Environmental Studies by representa-tions of atmosphere, mountains, cities, water, and the various levels of the earth’sinterior. The white shaft symbolizes the light and energy of learning stimulated by theHoly Spirit.
Germanic and Asian Languages and Literature DepartmentThe study of the Dutch and German languages is represented by symbols taken fromemblems of the countries associated with these languages. The traditional black eaglerepresents Germany, and the orange lion is from the seal of the Netherlands. The whiteshaft symbolizes the light of learning.
Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance, and Sport DepartmentEngaged in exercise, sports, and dance, a person in motion is suggested by the movementof rhythmical shapes and lines. Sage green is the color associated with physical fitness.

History DepartmentJagged horizontal bands, representing both the rise and fall of civilizations and the fourkingdoms as described in the Book of Daniel, move across vertical time lines, whichalso symbolize the dramatic influence of Christ on history.
LibraryThe library as a gatherer, receptacle, and distributor of information, ideas, and learningis represented by the abstract book shape, while the white, flowing shaft itself symbol-izes the light and energy of learning in the Holy Spirit of God. The flame is thetraditional symbol of learning and discovery through research.
Mathematics and Statistics DepartmentMathematicians have always saved time and effort by substituting symbols for words. The basic arithmetical steps of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing aredepicted on this banner by some of the earliest ways of writing them down.
The Renaissance calculator Tartaglia used the first letter of the Italian word for plus tosignify adding. Diophantus favored this minus sign in Greek times. Leibniz employedthis multiplication symbol in seventeenth-century Germany. J. E. Gallimard used thisreverse D for division in eighteenth-century France.
Music DepartmentThe design of the Music banner emphasizes the rhythms of musical sounds. Shapes andlines suggest strings, valves, keys, horn bell, drum, and other musical forms. Radiatingcircles suggest sound waves. The colors express the various moods of music.
Nursing DepartmentThe traditional emblem of nursing, Florence Nightingale’s lamp, is featured in thebanner for the Department of Nursing. The flame of the lamp symbolizes the light ofChristian compassion and education. The gold of the lamp is the traditional color forscience. The background apricot color is the academic regalia color for nursing, whilethe white shaft represents peace through the Holy Spirit.
Philosophy DepartmentLight refracted through a transparent prism symbolizes the many-faceted investigationsof fact and of principles of reality and of human nature and conduct.
Physics and Astronomy DepartmentThe construction of elements is symbolized in the Physics banner by the simplest atom, hydrogen, with its single proton and electron. Also included in the design are a tracingof the paths of particles from an atom and a segment of a crystal structure, which is alsothe floor-plan shape of the science building. The yellow shaft symbolizes the light ofinvestigation.

Political Science DepartmentThe banner of the Department of Political Science features a representation of thefasces, a symbol of the authority of the state, and arrows that express the directionand flow of the analytical and holistic nature of the process of law. The fasces, abundle of rods bound about by an ax with projecting blade, was carried beforeancient Roman magistrates as a symbol of authority. The white shaft of seven rodsalso symbolizes peace and enlightenment through the Holy Spirit.
Psychology DepartmentThe Greek letter psi, the first letter of the Greek word psyche (the mind), tradition-ally signifies the discipline of psychology. The color red symbolizes emotion; blue, rationality; and white, peace through the Holy Spirit.
Religion DepartmentThree symbols of the Trinity—circle, cross, and dove—express the fullness of Godas He reveals Himself as Creator, Savior, and Counselor. These symbols areinterlocked to depict the oneness of God. The shaft of white is the light of learningin Christian education guided by the Holy Spirit. Scarlet is traditionally associatedwith theology.
Sociology and Social WorkThe central concept of sociology, represented by the inner circle, is a personinteracting with other people to form groups. Total human society, represented bythe broken circle, is composed of many small units forming a larger interrelatedstructure. All groups, from the family to society itself, exist within a framework ofsocial norms. This normative or cultural framework, represented by the unbrokenouter circle, promotes conformity, as suggested by the arrows directed from ittoward the inner circles of society and the smaller group.
Spanish DepartmentThe banner of the Spanish Department features the traditional symbols of thehistorical kingdoms of Castilla (castle), León (lion), and Aragón (red and yellowbars). These Christian kingdoms emerged during the eight-hundred-year-longreconquest of the Iberian Peninsula from domination by Muslim rulers. The separatekingdoms were joined through the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella, andeventually coalesced into the modern nation of Spain.
