I I Ye ar o f s u c cess sound s for TI B I TAYPORT Instrumental Band are reaching the end o f their successful centenary year. They were in th e dol drums last year following a membership crisis which caused relegation, bu t stal warts and fresh recruits, under the baton of new conductor Bob McDonald from Dundee, have blown their wa y back into the First Section at the Scottish Brass Band Finals held recently in Falkirk. I t was. a case of down, on e year and straight back up again by defeating 11 other bands from all over Scotland in fine style. TIB's performance wa s "best by far," said adjudi cator Derek Broadbent. This result means Tay port represent Scotland at the National Brass Band Finals in Harrogate at the en d of September. Bob McDonald, an ex member and former con ductor of the junior band, ha s returned after a spell with Perthshire Brass to take the helm of th e senior band an d hi s conducting experience a n d a re building programme is making the future look bright. Hi s so n Paul, a former Tayport member, played soprano cornet in th e famous Grimethorpe Col liery Band, appearing in th e film Brassed Off. Busy months lie ahead as the band embarks on a concert programme which means engagements every weekend throughout Tay side and north Fife as well as having to prepare for Harrogate. One event th e residents of Tayport will be looking forward to will be on Sun day, June 21, when the band will parade around the town showing of f their haul of trophies an d round in g off th e centenary year. This will be followed by a concert in th e grounds of th e council offices. Although th e band is self-supporting, relying local an d membership subscriptions, members a re always willing to help out with other fund-raising ventures. TIB have already been involved in raising over £400 fo r the Tayport Com munity Sports and Action Group an d will be playing at th e Harbour Gala on Sunday, May 10 , which is a fund-raiser towards th e building of a ne w sports centre in Tayport. Band members ar e of al l ages a n d playing ability an d come from as fa r off as Arbroath and Anstruther but experi enced members ar e still being sought.
