A traditional 4-4-2 is used in Diagram A. Practising the drill: Diagram B • The coach decides where to run with the ball at his feet to start off the drill. • While the coach is running with the ball, the team will change position accordingly. • Once he stops running, the whole team must be aware of his position and change their position to counter the position of attack. • Once he is happy with the posi- tioning of his team, he begins to run again. • In Diagram B, we see how the team must defend when the attack is on the left of the field. Diagram C • In Diagram C, we show how the team must defend and position themselves when the attack is high on the right of the field. • Please note that the closest defender always attacks the position of the ball and the other defender moves and covers in case the attacker gets past the first defender. Coach’s Note • The team must be alert to the position of the ball and coach at all times. • We use two players in the drill so that the players get to know who will be challenging for their posi- tion. • You can use this drill to assist your team where they are weak defending in a certain area of the pitch. • As you can see in the diagrams, the whole team works together to move into position irrespective of where the ball is on the pitch. This week Ajax Cape Town’s Craig Rosslee shows us a drill for your team to practise their defending.
