What is it ?
The European Year of Languages 2001,
jointly organised by the Council of Europeand the European Union, was successful in
involving millions of people across 45
participating countries. Its activities
celebrated linguistic diversity in Europe andpromoted language learning.

200 European languages and many morespoken by citizens whose family origin is

and old - you are never too old to learn alanguage and to enjoy the opportunities it
opens up. Even if you only know a few words
of the language of the country that you visit
(for example on holiday), this enables you tomake new friends and contacts.

In order to learn more about language diversity
pupils and students can take part in our fun online
activities. Through our games and quizzes you canget a taster of the various languages of Europe. If
you like music, why not organise a musical event to
promote the various languages and musical genres
in Europe? You could even share suchperformances with others via our website.

For teachers of languages or, indeed, of othersubjects the Day offers multiple possibilities: the
opportunity to learn about other cultures, traditionsand languages which are not normally presented inthe classroom; the opportunity to promote the pupilscreative talents by putting on sketches illustrating thelanguages that they can speak, set up language
cafes, highlight all the languages spoken in theschool

The European Day of Languages is a great opportunity to viewthe university/school and the surrounding city as a place wherepeople from diverse backgrounds meet, live and interact andwhere languages flourish. Why not set up discussion groupsbetween people from different language backgrounds? Onlinesocial networks are a good way to generate such interactionand you can even become a fan of the European Day ofLanguages on Facebook. Universities or schools bordering on
other countries could organize trips to meet students fromacross the border. Schools could also run competitions for theirpupils focusing on the acquisition and improvement of languageskills.
