Genesis 3:4 (ESV) “The serpent said to the woman,
‘You will not surely die.’”
John 8:44b (NIV) “He was a murderer from the
beginning, not holding to the truth,
for there is no truth in him. When he
lies, he speaks his native language,
for he is a liar and
the father of lies.”
Proverbs 6:16-17a (NIV) “There are six things the Lord
hates, seven that are detestable
to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying
tongue…”
Proverbs 21:6 (ESV) “The getting of treasures by a
lying tongue is a fleeting vapor
and a snare of death.”
Proverbs 20:17 (ESV) “Bread gained by deceit is
sweet to a man, but afterward
his mouth will be full of gravel.”
Titus 1:2 speaks of the
God “who never lies.”
The word ‘lie’ in Hebrew means
‘falsehood’…in the Greek it means ‘to
willfully misrepresent or mislead’
So a good, biblically founded
definition of lying is “to speak falsely
with the intent to deceive”

unfair and oppressive we have been,
carefully planning our
deceitful lies.”
Acts 5:4b (ESV) “Why is it that you have
contrived this deed in your
heart? You have not lied to man
but to God.”
We live a lie
Matthew 15:7-8 (NIV)
“You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah
prophesy of you, when he said: 8 ‘This
people honors me with their lips, but
their heart is far from me.’”
We lie to ourselves
Galatians 6:3 (NIV)
“If anyone thinks they are something
when they are not, they deceive
themselves.”
We lie to others
Matthew 5:37 (NLT)
“Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No,
I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from
the evil one.”
Ephesians 4:25 (ESV) “Therefore, having put away
falsehood, let each one of you
speak the truth with his
neighbor, for we are members
one of another.”
“What upsets me
is not that you
lied to me, but
that from now on
I can no longer
believe you.”
Friedrich Nietzsche German Philosopher
Ephesians 4:15 (NLT) “We will speak the truth in love,
growing in every way more and
more like Christ, who is the head
of his body, the church.”
