Cafu is undoubtedly the best right back in the history of football. He played the FIFA world cup finals for three times, played for twenty-one world cup matches, and won the FIFA

world cup trophy twice. He earned 143 caps, which is the most number of games played by a Brazilian player. Although there were many star players in Brazilian national team, he was always starting member.

Just like a majority of boys raised at shantytown in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Cafu’s only hope was football. Although he was an ordinary student at school, he was outstanding at football. When he was only seven years old, he went to football academy, where he could be scouted to famous football clubs’ youth team. He played as a futsal player for two years and his ability enhanced quickly.

Cafu is not his full name it is his nickname just like other Brazil-ian players. People called him Cafu because; his performances were

exactly like the formal Brazilian right back, Cafuringa who played

for Fluminense FC and Clube Atletico Mineiro in 1970s. Cafu’s incisive dribble and cross were just as good as Cafur-inga’s. However, Cafu stepped over Cafur-inga’s play and he even-tually changed his name to “Cafu”. 1988, Cafu settled into Brazil’s number one football club, Sao Paulo. In the

year he joined the youth team, he led the team to win the local youth cup and was promoted to the first team. However, as he was still a hot prospect, he spent most of his time on bench.

Sao Paulo’s team manager at that time was known to be best Brazilian manager: Tele Santana. Cafu was originally a striker but Santana told him to play either as a right midfielder or as a right defender. Santana ask him to change his position, because Sao Paulo had so many attackers that even Cafu could not play as a back up.

Santana did not want to waste Cafu’s ability and as he started to play right back, he became one of the starting members. In 1990 September, he earned his first cap on a friendly match with Spain. Since then, he started to write new histories on his football career. In 1992 and 1993 he won the South American Champions league, Copa Libertadores de America, and in 1994 he won the best player of the continent award.

In 1994 USA World cup Cafu was back up member for one of the Brazil’s all time best right back, Jorge Jose de Amorim Compos. Fortuanetly for Cafu, Jorge got injured in 22 minutes in the Final match against Italy. Cafu’s contribution led Brazil to win the World cup for the third time. Cafu later transferred to Real Saragosa, and started to spread his name in European leagues. During his football career in Real Sarago-sa, he wins UEFA cup winners cup. In 1996 he returns to Palmerias but in 1997, he transfers to AS Roma and continues his football career in Europe.

Cafu led Samba boys with Ronaldo, Romario, Rivaldo, Leonardo and Roberto Carlos in 1990s and early 2000s. They won Copa Amer-ica in 1997 and 1999m and in 1998 he played at the France World

cup Finals. Although, Brazil lost to the host nation, France, Cafu earned the world’s best right back title. During his life at Rome, his penetrating overlapping ability led his team to win the league title in 2000/2001 seasons.

He won the FIFA world cup again in 2002 Korea Japan World cup. This competition was very meaningful for him, because he played in the finals for three consecutive times, won the world cup two times, and it was Brazil’s fourth World cup title. Cha Bum-keun is known to be the most successful Korean striker ever. His football career in the Bundesliga made Europeans to be more interested in the Asian football leagues. He scored 98 goals in 308 games just in the German league, which is absolutely fantastic as a foreign player. This is the most number of goals scored by a foreign player at that time in Bundesliga. However, after he retired, none of the Korean strikers could satisfy any Korean football fans. After 30 years of no ‘striker’, Korea finally found a potential world-class striker. His name is Son Heung min.

When he was sixteen years old, he joined Hamburg’s youth academy. Two years later, when he was promoted to the first team, he impressed everyone by scoring nine goals in the 2010-11 preseason. This was magnificent as it was his first professional contract, which was signed on his 18th birthday. Right after he scored a goal against

Chelsea F.C, he was in injury for two months. However, when he returned to the team in October, he scored his first league goal on his first league game. Son is now recorded as the youngest HSV player to score a goal in Bundesliga. Despite the fact he is too young to play for the first team, he scored his second and third goal on his next league game. This helped him to earn his first cap. Due to high expectation from Korean football fans, he felt very pressured. However, he managed to score his first international goal on a game against India during 2011 Asian Cup.

Son’s contract will last until 2014. Due to his impressive performances in the pre-season, he was often called as “Korean Muller” and received countless number

of praises from Franz Beckenbauer. In his first season, he scored 3 goals in 7 games. Van nistelrooy, the dutch football legend, gave special tutoring to Son for 2 years. Although Ruud left the team when his contract finished, he said he would be in contact with Son as a mentor.

Son is only 18years old and just had his first wonderful season as a

member of HSV squad. Hopefully, he would be the striker that Koreans have waited for 30 years and break the record that the Korean Legend, Cha Bum-

keun, set 30 years ago.

Diminishing Hope VS.

Revival of the Gunners

There are still troubles brewing at the Emirates Sta-dium. At this year’s summer transfer market, Arsenal had lost their two best

players- Cesc Fabregas and Nasri. It is still questionable whether Arsenal can do well in 2011-2012 Barclays Premier League.

As Fabregas and Nasri bid adieu to the Emirates, it was Wenger’s job to sign prominent players to replace these two players. Wenger placed Tomas Rosicky, Alex Song, and Aaron Ramsey as midfields in this season, where they could penetrate the center and also play deeper into the enemy defensive line. Wenger chose Gervinho, replacing Nasri, who has spectacular drib-bling skills.

However the situation of Arsenal is not promising. It has turned out that the absences of the two ‘leaders’ of the team had brought quite an impact to Arsenal. The Emirates lost to its long time rival, Manchester United, 2:8, which was

shocking for Arsenal fans to accept this hu-miliating defeat.

Major problem is that Arsenal’s Midfield lacked creativity; it is true that the move-ment and playmaking in Midfield was shock-ingly lackluster. Arsene Wenger himself had admitted that the speed and the accuracy of the passes were nowhere near the level that the fans expect from Arsenal.

The new winger, Gervinho had shown immaculate con-trol of the ball, he also received many chances in the center, but he still failed to completely satisfy the Emirate fans by grasping goal chances. It proved that Gervinho had showed slower acceleration compared to Nasri. This made the fans long for Fabregas and Nasri’s innate ability to provide an outlet, crucial opportunity for the forwards, (Especially Fabregas, who has the highest number of assists in major European Leagues in the last five years)

Still, Arsenal is not completely collapsed yet. Robin Van Persie, who was promoted to club captain follow-

ing the transfer of Cesc Fabregas, had shown his brilliant control and how he

can grasp goal-scoring opportunities. Van Persie had scored many goals in major matches, including scoring a Hat-trick in Arsenal’s 5-3 victory against Chelsea; he is also the cur-rent top soccer in 2011-2012 season of Barclays Premier League, scoring 11 goals in 11 matches. It can be said that Van Persie helped Arsenal to jump

back to 7th place, where Emirates truly belongs.

Fans could see new players developing and adapting

to Arsenal, includ-ing Park Chu Young,

a new player brought from AS Monaco. Even though he had some difficulty adapting to his new team, Park Chu-Young satisfied fan’s expectation by scoring his first goal for Arsenal against Bolton Wander-ers, giving Arsenal the win by 2-1. Also Ger-vinho, criticized both by his violent conduct (slapping Joey Barton) and his lack of skills compared to Nasri, had contributed the team with his first league goal in a 4-3 loss to Blackburn Rovers, and contributed all three goals in Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over Stroke City, scoring the first goal and assisting both goals made by Robin van Persie.

It is only the 11th round of Barclays Premier League, and it might be too early to judge whether Emirates are doomed or not. The next few matches will be crucial for Arsenal, and their place in Premier League can be altered by the results. Wenger points out that Arsenal is heading for a higher target this season, but it seems there are obstacles and barriers for the Gunners.

Manchester United

successful youngsters

In 2011-2012 Barclays Premier League, Cham-pion Manchester United’s manager Sir Alex Ferguson introduced a major change in the

squad, replacing many senior stars such as Darren Fletcher, Ryan Giggs to youngsters such as Phil Johns, Danny Welbeck and John Cleverley. This is not a surprise since Ferguson had introduced many rising stars before, and it was part of the reason why he has achieved great success. Ferguson had stated ‘so we have a young element in the dressing room who are starting to take control of the place.’ The manager gives the impression he is enjoying this changing of the guard. ‘The young players have created a good spirit around the place. There is a perkiness about the dressing room’

Danny Welbeck

He was signed a loan to Sunderland for the 2010-2011. Made 26 appearances and scored 7 goals.

Welbeck had shown some great abilities to retain his position as he performed greatly in the pre-season matches including the FA Community Shield against the long time rival, Manchester City. Welbeck scored

his first season goal against Tottenham, heading a

cross from Tom Cleverley; then

also provided an assist for Anderson, contributing twice for 3-0 victory. He then scored

the first goal against Arsenal,

but unfortunate-

ly had to leave the field early due to a hamstring injury,

which pulled him off for several weeks .However, he recov-ered and showed his value by scor-ing his first UEFA Championship goal against FC Basel, and scored again in the premier

league match against Norwich City, scoring a

brilliant pass from Ji-Sung Park.

Phil Jones

At the end of the 2010–11 season, Manchester United were reportedly interested in signing Jones. He made

his debut for the club on the 2011 pre-season tour to the USA, in United’s 3–1 victory over Chicago fire. Jones had shown to Manches- ter’s fans that he is a skilled defender when he contributed to United’s Victory against Tottenham Hotspur. Furthermore, Jones created two assists for Wayne Rooney against Bolton Wanderers; he made a quick pinpoint pass for Rooney to score. Then after five minutes, he embarked a mazy dribble, causing panic in the Bolton Defense, even though his shot was blocked by the goalkeeper. Rooney eventually

7

Page 8: 90M December Issue

scored the goal. The brilliant performances shown had mesmer-ized United Fans, and they were impressed by his leadership skills and extraordinary strengths as a defender.

Javier HernandezHernandez showed extraordinary performance in the 2010-

2011 season of Barclays; he scored 13 in total. He won the ‘Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year’ award, and was named ‘World Goalgetter 2011’. However, he had an unfortunate start of the season as he suffered from neurological condition, he missed his pre-season matches and the United opening game against West Bromwich Albion. Hernandez scored his first and second season goal against Bolton Wanderers, contributing to 5-0 victory for Manchester United. He netted a crucial equalizer against Liverpool at Anfield, which just saved Manchester from defeat. Further-more, he contributed to the team by scoring his fourth league goal against Everton, achieving 1-0 victory. He scored his fifth goal in an away game against Swansea City, creating a 1-0 victory. Due to his outstanding performances, he signed a new 5-year contract with Manchester United until 2016.

Tom Cleverley Paul Scholes’ retirement left an opening in United’s midfield,

and Cleverley was able impress Ferguson in the pre-season match against Barcelona and Manchester City, and identified that he would be able to replace Scholes. He started his first Premier League game for Manchester United, playing full time against West Bromwich Albion, and Cleverley was able to contribute to 3-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur by getting an assist. He was able to indicate his potential and possibility to become United’s Best eleven. Unfortunately, he suffered from ligament damage in his foot, because he was tackled by Bolton’s Kevin Davies, which made him sit in the sideline for 1 month. He made his return from injury in the Carling Cup match against Aldershot Town. He was injured again in an away match against Everton, but Ferguson praised his performances during the match as ‘outstanding’. Clev-erley played in a more advanced midfield role for every match he participated. He could link defense with attack with his smart and fast passes, which convinced many Manchester fans that he adds creativity in the midfield, making him arguably one of the best players in Manchester United.

Best Goalkeeper EVER

Peter Schmeichel 193cm, 102kg

A finesse goalkeeper in the history of the Premier League since 1992, Peter Schmeichel was born in 1963 in Gladsaxe, Denmark. His first personal

football match was on 7th August 1972 when he was only 8 years old. In Brondby in 1987, he became an official professional footballer and in that year, he conceded 40 goals in 30 games. His great success was when he was a member of Red-Devils.

Manchester UnitedHe was not well known to English

so when he signed a contract with £550,000 from Brondby to Mancester United, everyone thought it was Sir.Fergerson’s mistake. However, with Peter Schmeichel, Mancester United won five Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the UEFA Cham-pions League.

His first season in Manchester United was just good. Team of history, Leeds United, won English Premier League and MU was the runner-up. But MU won EPL title next year. In 1993/94 season, Schemeichel almost left the Red-Devils after a 3-3 draw against Liverpool at Anfield. It was 3-0 winning before half-time but Schmeichel allowed three straight goals. Below is a long story about Schemeichel in Manchester United.

‘There was nothing I could do about the goals and I played really well. But after the game Alex Fergerson came straight at me because my goal-kicks had been go-ing up the middle of the park and Neil Ruddock, Liverpool, had been heading

them straight back. I felt that wasn’t fair and we ended up having a massive, massive row.

A lot of things were said and I ended up really de-

pressed – the more we talked, the worse it got

on both sides.’ “Fergerson wasn’t in his office the follow-

9

Page 10: 90M December Issue

ing day and I was so upset that I phoned my agent and told him I was ready to leave the club. Fergerson called me and he said: ‘Listen, I have to sack you, I can’t tolerate my players speaking to me like that. It goes against my authority.’ I just re-plied ‘Fair enough, if that’s what you want’ because I was so up-set. I realized I had gone too far and I apologized. He said I should apologize to my team-mates, rather than to him. As we left his office he said he would let it go that time – on the understanding it never happened again. But I could see he was still really sore about it and didn’t realize that he was listening outside when I apologized to all the play-ers in the dressing room.’

His last season in Manchester United was very fruitful. He was 46 years old but age was not a matter to make British club’s first-ever treble. In FA Cup, he saved Bergkamp’s penalty so Manchester could win FA Cup with Giggs’s final goal.

He was so tired of tough EPL schedule and decided to move to Sporting Lisbon, Portugal. He made 50 ap-pearances in Portugal but he returned to Aston Villa just few years later. He was not good as when he was in Manchester United, but how could he move to Manches-ter City, the real rival of the Red-Devils? It was because Schmeichel became just a normal goalkeeper in 2002 and Mancester City could not threat ManU’s winning road, too. However, with him, Manchester beat ManU at City of Manchester with 3-1.

New conceptOne new football concept that Peter Schmeichel created is throwing tactic.

With him, Manchester’s winning tactic was counter attack that

starts from Schemeichel. Do you know that either Beck-ham or Giggs always stayed in front? It was because needed process to score a goal was; 1.Schmeichel throw to side2. Giggs drib-ble really fast or Beckham cross to striker 3. Score

an easy goal. Really simple three steps to score a goal

that only MU could do.Schemeichel’s another

feature was his vocal. He was known as the best vocal goal-

keeper ever. He was quick to let his central defenders know when he was

not happy. They were usually Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister. Both of them believed him truly so they never complained about Schemeichel’s decision. Such an attitude is vital for a keeper as the defense needs to know they have someone in command behind them.

For both France and Zidane, 2002 and

ZINEDIN ZIDANEThis French footballer immigrated to Paris from Algeria in 1953. Lucky enough, it was just before the Algerian War. Zidane’s family moved to northern Marseille, where he started his football career. However, he is commonly known as France A team’s play maker.

Club careerHe was transformed to Girondins de

Bordeaux from Cannes in the 1992-93 season.

Fortunately, Brodeaux won 1995 Intertoto Cup

and got second place in 1995-96 UEFA Cup. In

1996, with success in Bordeaux, he moved to

Juventus. In his first and second seasons in

Italy, he won Series A twice and won

Intercontinental Cup in 1996.

In 2001, Zidane joined Real Madrid as a

member of the first Galactico. His transfer fee,

150 billion Italian lire (€75 million), was the

world record until Christiano Ronaldo joined

Read Madrid last year. Still, even thought it

was 10 years ago, his transfer fee is the

second in the world. In Real Madrid, with

Beckham, Ronaldo, Figo, and many other star

players, he won 2001-2002 UEFA Champions

League. He scored a winning half-volley goal

against Bayer Leverkusen. Real Madrid won

2002-03 La Liga as well and Zidane was

selected as the FIFA World Player of the Year.

On 7th May 2006, Zidane had his last

football game against Villarreal CF, making his

last home goal in honor.

France A teamHe could become ab Algerian player but

thankfully (?) coach Abdelhamid Kermali, the

Algeria A team coach denied Zidane because

he thought he was too slow to become a

football player. However, in 2005, Zidane said

‘because I already played for France, I couldn’t

be an Algeria A team member.’

In 1994, he became the captain in a

friendly match against Czech Republic. It was

2-2 but Zidane scored all two goals. He

gradually replaced Eric Cantona’s playmaker

position in the France A team.

His first FIFA World Cup was in France,

1998. In quarter finals, France beat Italy by 4-3

on penalties. The team beat Croatia again and

in the finals at the Stade de France against

Brazil, with Zidane’s two goals and Emmanuel

worst result of the defending champion. In

2004 quarter finals, France lost to Greece, who

became the champion.

2006 Germany World Cup was hopeless

for France since many star players retired.

However, surprisingly, they made up to the

finals. Every teammates knew that this finals is

the retire match of Zidane so they gave their

100 percent to the finals against Italy.

Unfortunately, the cause of France’s defeat

was actuallly Zinedin Zidane because of the

well known head-butting to Marco Materazzi.

Later, it was revealed that he insulted his sister.

Recently, in 2010, Zidane said ‘I would rather

die than apologize to Materazzi for the

headbutt in the final in Berlin. Not very

honorably, he retired his football player career

11. This Brazilian was born in

1954. He’s currently 57 years old.

Just for fun, his full name is

Socrates Brasileiro Sampaio de

Souza Vieira de Oilveira. This man

is famous for the Brazil’s golden

age with Pele.

There is not much

information left about him since

he is so old but the main

reason for the lack of

information is that he was not

regarded as the top football

player until 1990s. He was under

pele’s shade.

He is well known for not only his great

football skill but also his studies in Dublin,

where he studied medicine. He is a doctor of

medicine, which is very rare case for a

footballer. More surprisingly, he earned the

degree while he was playing football. Just out

of interest… he is now writing a novel about

2014 Brazil World Cup.

Career

He was born in Sao Paulo but he started

his professional in Botafogo in Riberto Preto.

He made 57 appearances and scored 24

goals, almost one goal in every two games.

From 1978 to 1984, he made 297 appearances

in Corinthians, one of the best clubs

in Brazil and scored 172 goals. Now it’s

more than 0.5 goal per match. He moved to

Fiorentina, Italy but failed to adapt to the new

environment. He came back to Brazil and

retired in 1989. Interestingly he played another

game in 2004, about 20 years after the

retirement. He agreed to be the playing-coach

in Garforth Town and he played 12 minutes of

game against Tadcaster Albion.

He appeared in two FIFA World Cups in

1982 and 1986 with Pele. However,

unfortunately, even his novel football couldn’t

win the Jules Rimet Cup to Brazil.

Franz Beckenbauer was born in 1945 in Munich, Germany. He started to play football when he was 14 in Bayern Munich, his lifelong team. In Bayern Munich, he appeared in 427 games for 13 years and scored 60, which is equal to one goal in 7 games. As a center defender or a sweeper, it was a very impressive result. He is in the century club as well. He appeared in 103 games as a West German and attended 1966, 1970 and 1974 World Cup. He had a successful career as a manager as well.

was famous for his potential in Munich. He joined Bayern Munich youth team in 1959; he

was only 14 years old at that time. In Bayern youth team, he was a center forward but during German local youth tournament, he realized that he should play defender for rest of his football life.

His debut with Bayern Munich was in Regionalliga, the old version of Bundesliga, Western German league. In 1964-1965 season, the team joined Bundesliga, which was a new national league. They won the German Cup and European Cup in the following year. In 1968, he became a new Bayern Munich’s captain and with him, Bayern won three league championships in a row from 1972-73 to 1974-75 season. Impressively, they won the European Cup as well, former

UEFA Champions league, three times in a row from 1974 to 1976. With this record, Bayern could keep the trophy permanently. Initially, clubs should give the trophy back to UEFA. In 1977, he suddenly moved to USA, New York Cosmos and he was there for 4 years. There, he just enjoyed football itself, without any pressure. In 1980, he came back to Germany but this time it wasn’t Bayern Munich, it was Hamburger SV. He was old but he brought the Bundesliga title to Hamburger SV. He retired after one year in New York Cosmos, USA. Overall, he made 587 appearances and scored 81, equivalent to a goal in every seven games, as a centre back.

New concept - sweeperFranz Beckenbauer was the person who

created the new ‘sweeper’ concept. It is usually called, Libero. It is a new role of defender but they attack frequently. It is basically a center defender but little in front of normal defense line. With cooperation with teammates, a sweeper presses the opponent team with the help of the offside rule, and once in possession of the ball, starts the attack and supports whole team from the back. Sometimes, one sweeper dribbled and scored several goals. Franz Beckenbauer was a clever sweeper or libero. Bayern Munich’s tactic was adjusted to him. All other 10 teammates pressed the opponents and intercepted the ball. Then, Beckenbauer slowly joined the attack with his brilliant dribble and eyesight. It was quite tough to stop him as an opponent.

(One interesting episode: Franz Beckenbauer was called as football-emperor just because he sat next to Austrian emperor. Austria was very powerful country at that time.)HonorsBundesliga title – 1968-69, 1971-72, 1972-73, 1973-74, 1981-82DFB CUP – 1965-66, 1967-68, 1968-69, 1975-76European Cup (UEFA Champions League) – 1966-67, 1973-74, 1974-75, 1975-76NASL Championship – 1997, 1978, 1980FIFA World Cup – Winner: 1974, Runner-up: 1966, Third place: 1970FIFA centennial Player and Football Personality Award: 2004Ballon d’Or: 1972, 1976FIFA World Cup Golden Ball: 1974German Footballer of the Year: 1966, 1968, 1974, 1976

He was born in 1973 in Naples, Italy. He’s only 176cm, obviously very small for center defender but he made great career as one. When he was young, he lived in Naples, the home of the team SSC Napoli. He was one of the players who made possible the great results of the Italy national team. His heyday was 2006 when Italy national team won 2006 Germany FIFA World Cup in Berlin. He made 136 appearances as a member of the Italy national team

Club careerHe joined Napoli youth team when he was 11

and he was just a normal ball-boy of SSC Napoli. His idol was Diego Maradona and Chilo Ferarra because he saw them every week on the pitch. They were both in SSC Napoli so Cannavaro dreamed a successful life in Napoli. Luckily, he

started practicing in Napoli A team since 16 years old. Surprisingly, there was Maradona was one of the members. Unfortunately, SSC Napoli went bankrupt, and he was transferred to Parma involuntarily. It was there where he joined Italy national team.

He moved to Internazionale in 2002, but it wasn’t a ground that he could be successful. Two years later, he moved to Juventus. However, unluckily, Calciopoli, 2006 Italian football scandal, was revealed. Juventus was relegated to Series B and lost Scudetto as well. Many thought Cannavaro’s football career would end, but he eventually became the best football player in 2006. National career

His first international tournament was 1998 France World Cup. In quarter finals, against France, Cannavaro suffered a cut in his head by Stephane Guivarc’h. Unfortunately, his first World Cup ends with this injury.

In Euro 2000, in the finals against France once again, Cannavaro played as Italy’s right-back. Again, unluckily, Italy’s hope was shattered by David Trezeguet’s extra-time golden goal. In 2002 Korea and Japan World Cup, Italy lost against Korea, in quarter-finals and failed to be enter the quarter finals in Euro 2004 Portugal.

2006 Germany World Cup was Italy’s and his peaks. No one thought Italy could win this World Cup since they played so badly in the last several international tournaments. He became the captain of Italy national team, replacing Nesta. With his great leadership and Zidane’s silly heading, Italy won 2006 Germany World Cup. He won the 2006 FIFA World Cup silver ball award and Ballon d’Or in the same year.

You think China’s Football team is un-usually bad? Check this out.

Living in China, most of football fans in our school know that China, which is the country that excels in almost

every sport, is not very good at foot-ball. China’s current FIFA ranking of 70 represents such situation. However, even Chinese national football team won over hundreds of international games. At this point, someone read-ing this might think ‘duh~, how hard is it to win a game?’ As it turns out, before this November, there was one and the only international team with no victory.

Let’s imagine that you are a passionate football-loving teen-ager living in a country that has never won an international game in your lifetime. One night, you are watching the game of your country against another. You are pretty sure that your coun-try is going to lose again, but you stick to watch the game with the mind - ‘maybe this time’. And after 90 minutes, you are heading outside your apartment joining crowds of people who are cel-ebrating the first football victory in the country’s history.

The American Samoa football team, ranked 204th (last) among football

teams around the world by FIFA, made history on November 23rd when it won its first international game. For 16 really long years, American Samoa National Association Football teams had never sa-vored victory. This is team that played 30 games since 1994 but lost all 30. The team also holds another bad record: largest loss in international football history – 30:1 against Australia in 2001. But all that was history when the team was hailed victorious against Tonga 2-1 in a pre-qualifying game for the 2014 World Cup.

American Samoa is an island

country with only 199 km square area.

This area is barely over 1% of Beijing

land size. In addition, the total population of

the country is 55,000. This kind of environment

creates a situation that makes the occupation of

professional football play-ers unlikely. Therefore, both

interestingly and sadly, the American Samoa football team

consists of players who have to sacrifice their time and money to

play for their home country. However, regardless of what situation the country is

in, the first victory in its football history created national triumphs.

Speaking of American Samoa’s situation, there is the country’s unique tradition that took part in American Samoa’s victory. Among 11 starting play-ers in the game that American Samoa won, there was one player whose sex was not clear, that is - a man trapped in women’s body. Johnny Saelua, who played as starting defender and assisted first goal, was the one. To clarify, in Samoan culture, there is cultural practice called ‘Fa’afafine’. The term rep-resents the third gender of Samoan culture, which often times female child is raised just like male child. It is culturally wrong to use ‘transgender’ to describe ‘Fa’afafine’; however, Johnny Saelua was the first player to complete World Cup stage. Also, by assisting the first goal in 2:1 victory, Saelua played an important role in ‘winning’ the game.

Although American Samoa won for the first time in its football history, the country failed to move up to second round of regional World Cup Qualification round. The victory was not easy; it involved players’ sacrifice and Samoans’ unique culture. Overall, what is important is that the coun-try has finally tasted the joy of victory. With that, football will develop rapidly in the country.

AS A PREMIER LEAGUE FOOTBALL FAN, CAN YOU TELL US ANYTHING INTERESTING ABOUT PREMIER LEAGUE?

I think the most interesting thing about the premier league is that all the games are pretty mental. But back in some leagues, Bundes Liga or Spanish league, the games are often one sided. Even in the premier league, Manchester City playing Swansea City is still being competitive. I think it's the most interesting thing. The competitiveness of the games. It is very rare to get a one-sided game.

WHY DO YOU SUPPORT EVERTON?

Um... (it’s not good reason) But it’s because When I was seven years old (1984), Everton won the FA cup. So, I kind of latched on to them.

WHO DO YOU THINK IS/WAS THE BEST PLAYER IN EVERTON?

It’s been a lot of players in the history that I’ve never seen, but the best player that I’ve ever actually saw playing was Neville Southall. He was a goalkeeper. I think at the time, he would probably be the best goalkeeper in the world. If you saw him, you will be amazed because he was quite fat and didn’t like a football player. But he was an amazing goalkeeper. He was at Everton virtually in his entire career. He started in lower league team but came to Everton. He actually played more games for Everton than any of the player ever. He was a real Legend and Everton fans love him.

IF YOU CAN RELEASE ANY PLAYER FROM EVERTON, WHOM ARE YOU GOING TO RELEASE?

I think at the moment, my least favorite player, one which to get rid of, is Diniyar Bilyaletdinov. Everton spent 9million pound on him. (Everton don’t have lot of money so it’s a lot of money for Everton) and he’s done nothing in Everton. Other than him, I would get rid of Johnny Heitinga, the Dutch player. He chats too much.

15 YEARS AGO, EVERTON WAS THE BEST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT CURRENT STATUS OF EVERTON IN THE LEAGUE?

It’s very hard to support in a team when they have no money. And Everton has no money. And because of that, it’s very hard to imagine my team to win the league. In my lifetime, they might do it again one day. So at the moment, it’s quite hard to support them. But obviously now, I’d picked that team and I stick with them because I love that team. I would say, they are at very average. They would probably finish ninth at the end of the season.

London, which is the capital city of England and United Kingdom, is the megacity with over 10 million people.

As England is one of the first countries to start football, many football fans reside in the London city. Therefore, there are many professional football teams in London. This year’s 2011 – 2012 English

Premiere League (EPL), there are 5 London Teams: Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur, and Queens Park

Rangers (QPR).

Among that 5 London teams, there is a new

name that we have not seem last year in English Premiere league – Queens Park Rangers. With three teams includ-ing Westham relegated last season, three teams promoted from Football League Championship: Queens Park Rangers, Nor-wich city and Swansea city. QPR, which was founded in 1882, has a relatively long tradition. The team has several honorable accomplishments in its history, winning a League cup in 1967 is one of them. 2011 – 2012 season is QPR’s 5th EPL season, as the team played four seasons from 1992 to 1996.

As Queens Park Rangers is located in West London, the team has rivalry formed with other West London teams such as Chelsea and Fulham. This year’s 9th round game between QPR and Chel-sea demonstrates such fierce rivalry. During the game, both teams’ players involved in more physical tackling than usual games, and fans of QPR were very excited. QPR surprisingly won that particu-lar game, which was less likely to happen. Neil Warnock, who managed sev-eral different English professional teams, currently manages Queens Park Rangers. The team’s Iceland born striker Heiðar Helguson is helping his fellow team mates and managers to do relatively well by plac-ing 9th in first 12 rounds of games. Know-ing the relationships between teams helps football fans to understand the game. Let’s enjoy the fierce and interesting 90 minutes in next derbies of QPR.

In Africa, many unfortunate children die because of starvation, disease and dispute. For those children, football

is hope. African children gather in the village yard and play with their bare feet. If they are lucky, they see brilliant Afri-can players playing in European leagues through television. There are many talented African players who exert their full efforts and skills in European leagues. Among those talented African players, there are two strikers who not only have excellent football skills, but also plant hopes in unfortunate African children. The strikers are – Didier Drogba and Em-manuel Adebayor.

Born in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivore, Didier Drogba spent most of his early years in his hometown. Although Drogba left his country and lived in France when he was 15, he respected his home coun-try and often suffered from homesick. As Drogba gained skills and fame as a football striker, he did not forget about his origin and proportionately increased his donation to the home continent. Even when he got in to Chelsea and peaked his career, he never stopped helping unfor-tunate children and people in Africa.

Didier Drogba’s actions can show how much one person can bring about changes in a country, continent, and the world. In 2006, Drogba led Cote d’Ivore to qualify for a world cup. During such journey, Cote d’Ivore was undergoing political disputes and turmoil. However, Drogba urged the nation to settle a long grudging war and focus on hope – the world cup. He did not stop here in mak-ing the world better place. In 2007, Drogba created Didier Drogba foundation that builds and funds hospitals in Africa. With his great football skills and fame, Didier Drogba foundation was able to achieve its first goal by 2010. In the same

year, Drogba was appointed as Goodwill Ambassador in United Nations Develop-ment Programme, he was finally given a chance to help Africa in global manner.

Emmanuel Adebayor has similar story. Togo born top-class striker, Ade-bayor has currently raised issue about his weekly income not only because of greed, but also because of the need of money to continue charity businesses in his home country. As Togo is very poor country, Adebayor’s high income can play important role in stimulating Togo’s economy when put into such programs. Although Adebayor is not obliged to help his country, he creates peace in his coun-try and holds a lot of charity programs in his continent. These actions also plant hopes into many young children in Africa.

The cote d’Ivore born Chelsea striker and Togo born Tottenham Hot-spurs striker are not the only African players who are doing good deeds to their home countries or continents. Instead, almost all African players con-tribute to their home country through donation and national matches. We know one thing that is true about those African players – they are the African ambassadors of hope.
