Second Sunday of Easter Page 2 April 28, 2019

Weekend at Birney’s

Welcome Fr. Adam Nowak As most of you are aware, Fr. Dominic’s

three year assignment at St. Frances Cabrini

will conclude this June.

Time truly does fly, when you’re having

fun! As you will be hearing this weekend, his

new assignment will begin on July 1 at St. Hu-

go of the Hills, in Bloomfield Hills. With this move, a new

associate pastor will be assigned to our parish - Fr. Adam

Nowak.

His assignment will also begin on July 1. Deacon Adam

(his ordination to the priesthood takes place on June 8), will

come to our parish, fresh out of the seminary, as a newly

ordained priest. He is a native of the Downriver area, as his

family hails from Brownstown, and his home parish is St.

Cyprian in Riverview.

To learn about Adam’s journey toward the priesthood,

visit detroitpriest.com and click on the Seminary tab [Meet

the Seminarians].

In the coming weeks, we’ll have a more proper ‘thank

you’ for Fr. Dominic and also a more formal ‘welcome’ for

Fr. Adam.

For now, please pray for each of these men, as they pre-

pare to make these transitions in service to God’s people.

Some special thank you’s

I would like to send a few special thank you’s on behalf of

the parish to members of our parish and pastoral staff who

helped to make this Holy Week and Easter so spiritual and

memorable:

- Therese Tardiff, our Chris4an Service coordinator, who co-

ordinated the weeklong ChristNet Warming Center at

Cabrini. Therese, along with an army of volunteers from the

parish, hosted, fed, housed and cared for 28 men and wom-

en nightly for en4re week. It is no surprise that many of our

guests remarked to me, ‘your parish has made us feel very

welcome and loved, unlike any other!’ This is a testament to

the great care and organiza4on that Therese and her many

volunteers put forward for the ‘least among us.’

- Our music for Holy Week and Easter helped to make our

liturgies a truly prayerful experience. Thank you to Luke

Simpson, our Music director, for his hard work and faith-

filled dedica4on. Thank you also to our choir members and

the Praise and Worship Ensemble, for sharing your talents

to create such a ‘beau4ful noise’ in praise of God.

- Theresa Zacny, and her crew of volunteers, for the always

incredible decora4ons and flowers for all our liturgical cele-

bra4ons. The countless hours you spend beau4fying our

Church is always appreciated, and certainly no4ced.

- To all our liturgical ministers (ushers, sacristans, lectors,

eucharis4c ministers, altar servers, cantors, greeters) ... any

and all who gave of their 4me and talents to help make our

celebra4on of the Eucharist a faith-filled and spiritual expe-

rience.

May God con4nue to bless all who both assisted and par-

4cipated in our liturgies. As we now celebrate the Easter

Season, let us revel in the glory that is Jesus. He is risen from

the dead!

Please join us!

I look forward to seeing all of you at our next two major

events at St. Frances Cabrini:

- The relic of Blessed Solanus Casey will be here May 3 to 5.

A Holy Hour with confession, prayer, adora4on and venera-

4on of the relic will take place on May 3 at 7 p.m. The relic

will be available each day from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. for venera-

4on.

- Easter Parish Mission with Fr. Steven Bell, 7 p.m. nightly

May 6 to 8 in the Church. Come to re-enliven your faith and

be inspired by the joyful and faithful witness of Fr. Bell.

What beGer way to spend a few nights this Easter Season!

See you in Church, Fr. Tim Birney, Pastor

A =sket, a tasket,

we are collec=ng Fes=val baskets We have started collec4ng baskets

for the Fes4val Booth, and want to en-

courage you to think about crea4ng a

themed basket for our game of chance

under the big tent.

Baskets, which parishioners create

around a theme of their choice, go

home with the winners of our game. It

is a popular spot, and we want to make

sure we have enough baskets to sa4sfy

the women, children and men who stop

by.

The ideas are endless for basket

themes, and here are just a few ideas:

Summer4me fun, movie night, game

night, sports, spiritual enrichment, can-

dles, wine, gardening, family ac4vi4es,

scrapbooking.

As an example, the sports basket

may include golf balls, towel, tees, a

cer4ficate to a local course. The movie

basket may include boxes of theater

candy, a DVD, popcorn, theater cer4fi-

cates.

Have fun with this opportunity – the

possibili4es are endless. The fes4val in

June 7,8,9, and we will accept baskets

un4l fes4val 4me.

Perhaps you can’t make a basket,

but have a basket around the house

that someone else could use. Please

bring it to Mass with you and leave it on

the table in the Narthex. If you are in

need of a basket to fill, stop by and pick

one up.

Second Sunday of Easter Page 6 April 28, 2019

Believe … with Fr. Steve Happy Easter brothers and sisters. I hope your Easter celebra4ons were filled with great joy and family fun!

As I promised (and predicted) at Good Friday services, the weather would be GLORIOUS on Easter Sunday …

and it was! Today, on the second Sunday of Easter, we celebrate what is known as Divine Mercy Sunday. This

Sunday all that Jesus wants to give us is His mercy!

Not all of us have heard of “Divine Mercy Sunday,” but we should! Nearly 100 years ago, Jesus appeared to

a Polish nun named Sr. Faus4na Kowalska. Jesus asked for three things: 1) The 3 p.m. hour of mercy to be

kept (Jesus died at 3 p.m. and He wants everyone to acknowledge His death daily at 3 p.m.); 2) for an image to be painted

depic4ng His mercy (known as the Image of Divine Mercy. We have one on the right hand side of the Church by the Sa-

cred Heart Altar); 3) for the Sunday aSer Easter to be kept as Divine Mercy Sunday.

Faus4na wrote a diary of her visions and conversa4ons with Jesus. Today I wanted to offer a few really important and

beau4ful quotes from Faus4na’s diary:

“Great love can change small things into great ones, and it is only love which lends value to our acons. And the purer

our love becomes, the less there will be within us for the flames of suffering to feed upon, and the suffering will cease to be

a suffering for us; it will become a delight! By the grace of God, I have received such a disposion of heart that I am never

so happy as when I suffer for Jesus, whom I love with every beat of my heart.” (Entry 303, Page 140)

“I will not allow myself to be so absorbed in the whirlwind of work as to forget about God. I will spend all my free mo-

ments at the feet of the Master hidden in the Blessed Sacrament.” (Entry 82, Page 42)

“A soul does not benefit as it should from the sacrament of confession if it is not humble. Pride keeps it in darkness. The

soul neither knows how, nor is it willing, to probe with precision the depths of its own misery. It puts on a mask and avoids

everything that might bring it recovery.” (Entry 113, Page 63)

“He who knows how to forgive prepares for himself many graces from God. As oDen as I look upon the cross, so oDen

will I forgive with all my heart.” (Entry 390, Page 175).

Jesus to Fausna: “‘I am love and mercy Itself. There is no misery or sin that could be a match for My mercy, neither will

misery exhaust it, because as it is being granted – it increases. The soul that trusts in My mercy is most fortunate, because I

Myself take care of it.’” (Entry 1273, Page 459)

“Today the Lord said to me, ‘Daughter, when you go to confession,

to this fountain of My mercy, the Blood and Water which came forth

from My heart always flows down upon your soul and ennobles it. Eve-

ry me you go to confession, immerse yourself enrely in My mercy,

with great trust, so that I may pour the bounty of My grace upon your

soul. When you approach the confessional, know this, that I Myself am

waing there for you. I am only hidden by the priest, but I myself act in

your soul. Here the misery of the soul meets the God of Mercy. Tell

souls that from this fount of mercy souls draw graces solely with the

vessel of trust. If their trust is great, there is no limit to My generosi-

ty. The torrent of grace inundate humble souls. The proud remain al-

ways in poverty and misery, because My grace turns away from them

to humble souls.” (Entry 1602, Page 568)

“‘I remind you, My daughter, that as oDen as you hear the clock

strike the third hour, immerse yourself completely in My mercy, adoring

and glorifying it; invoke its omnipotence for the whole world, and par-

cularly for poor sinners; for at that moment mercy was open wide for

every soul. In this hour you can obtain everything for yourself and for

others for the asking; it was the hour of grace for the whole world -

mercy triumphed over jusce.’” (Entry 1572, Page 558)

Happy Divine Mercy Sunday!

In the Heart of Jesus and Mary,

Fr. Steve

How do we pray amidst a busy schedule?

What does a deep prayer life look like for me as a busy Mom or Dad?

How can I contemplate God within my busy daily life?

Dr. Cooney, a professor of Spirituality and Systemic Theology at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, will give us the development and variety of prayer forms. She will help us integrate our faith life with our active lives. Using the example of Fr. Solanus, she will help us be faithful to God in the present moment!

Dr. Cooney has been involved in the ministries of spiritual direction and pastoral counseling for over 20 years. She is a member of the Catholic Theological Society of America and has done extensive lecturing nationwide in the areas of theology and spirituality.

Divine Mercy

In the Gospel today, Jesus stands

in the midst of us and says:

“Peace be with you!” Indeed, the

mercy of God centers our heart in

peace.

Thank you for your generosity

to our neighbors in need during

the Easter Season. Through your

gifts, the Soceity of St. Vincent

DePaul was able to help the poor

celebrate the peace of Easter by

assisting needy families with

food and help with rent and utili-

Ministry provides food for the soul

Our parish has a wonderful Funeral

Luncheon ministry through which spe-

cial comfort is provided to fellow pa-

rishioners grieving the death of a loved

one.

The volunteers involved with this

ministry assist Ruthie, our cer4fied ca-

terer, in providing a full meal aSer the

funeral liturgy. As summer approaches

and volunteers travel, the group is look-

ing for addi4onal support from parish-

ioners. There are many ways to help.

As a volunteer, you can offer to or-

ganize and oversee a luncheon, or you

can be part of the team that sets up

Holy Family Hall, serves the lunch, and

cleans up aSerward, or you can provide

a side dish or dessert for the meal Ruth-

ie prepares.

If you would like to be part of the

Funeral Luncheon ministry, which has

been in place since 1998, please call

Therese Tardiff, coordinator of Chris4an

Service, at 313-381-5601, Ext. 1051.

Homebound/Nursing Home Ministry

There is a growing number of parishioners who are un-

able to worship with us, but who long to stay connected

to the parish through the Eucharist.

To meet the requests we receive, we are looking for

parishioners to join the parish team of lay ministers who

bring Communion to their homes or nursing facility.

If you feel called to share your faith in these ways,

please call Therese Tardiff in the Parish Office, 313-381-

5601, Ext. 1051.
