Types of Pumps
HORIZONTAL split case pumps are the mostcommon type of Fire Pump. These pumps arespecially tested for fire-service applicationswhere reliability of performance is of vitalimportance. They are characterized by easyaccess to all working parts, ruggedconstruction, liberal water passages, andefficient operation. They are specified when thesource of water is located above the surface ofthe ground and will provide a positive suctionpressure to the pump at any performance point.There are several capacity ratings of Auroraapproved Fire Pumps available ranging from aminimum of 250 GPM. Single stage or multi-stage pumps are available dependent upondischarge pressure requirements.AURORA COMPLIES WITHPERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS FORFIRE PUMP SERVICE WITH ITSSTANDARD PRODUCTION PUMPS.

Fire Pump Accessories
Various accessories are required for any firepump installation. Specific needs vary depend-ing upon the requirements of local insuranceauthorities as well as the individual installation.The current edition of the National FireProtection Association (NFPA) pamphlet No.20 specifies many of the accessories required.
Aurora Pump can provide approved FirePumps and a complete line of approved FirePump accessories.Available accessories include: hose valves, hosevalve header, main relief valve, waste cone, con-centric tapered discharge increaser, eccentrictapered suction reducer and splash shields.
Jockey Pump Introduction
Occasionally in a Fire Pumpsystem, water leakage will occur atflanged or threaded pipeconnections, valve stems, stuffingboxes, etc. This normal loss ofwater will lower the systempressure gradually until the mainFire Pump is required to start. Tominimize wear on the Fire Pumpresulting from unnecessaryoperation, a Jockey Pump isrecommended for the system. In aJockey Pump system a small pump,motor, and controller/pressureswitch unit is installed in thepiping system. The Jockey Pumppressure switch is set forapproximately five P.S.I.G. greaterthan the pressure switch for themain Fire Pump Controller. When
the water pressure drops below thepre-set level, the pressure switchenergizes a starter which activatesthe Jockey Pump. Correct waterpressure is therefore maintained atall times. An optional minimumrun timer will prevent the JockeyPump from being started toofrequently. This timer will insureoperation for a minimum of 3minutes. If a fire should start, thepressure will continue to drop andthe main Fire Pump will start.Automatic controllers also includea “Hand-Off Automatic” selectorswitch for manual operation.Fusible 3-pole disconnect switch,magnetic motor contactor andthermal overload relays withexternal reset are standard.
