IS A MUST HAVE

01Empowers the Do-It-Yourselfer

Reasons Every Handyman Needs a Multi-Tool

A lot of do-it-yourselfers have already discovered that the oscillating multi-tool is the one power tool that allows them to ‘play with the big boys’.

Since their invention in the 1960’s, oscillating multi-tools have been growing in popularity every year. It’s not an exaggeration to say that this is the one tool that every handyman must have in his toolkit, because it’s a tool that can seemingly do everything. In 2008, the original patent expired on the multi-tool, and there was an instant rush by many power tool makers to get their version of the oscillating multi-tool on the market.

This fact alone speaks volumes about how useful this versatile tool has become since it was first made available. Why is it such a must-have handyman tool? Here are a few reasons - and if you purchase one, you’ll probably come up with your own list to add to these.

Even the occasional handyman can enjoy the role of household maintenance master when he has this one tool in his arsenal. Because it can do so much - and do it with relative ease - it turns even less experienced handymen into household pros.

02Task VersatilityAn oscillating multi-tool has the capability of using several different attachments, each of which is ideally suited to a particular kind of task.

These attachments can be used for:

SANDING & GRINDING

SCRAPING SAWING & CUTTING

GROUT REMOVAL

Even better - various specialty attachments allow the multi-tool to work on many different kinds of surfaces, and because there are so many different attachment blades and accessories, the versatility factor for the tool really mushrooms. Virtually any job can be tackled and completed with ease, precision, and accuracy.

Can Accomplish Difficult Jobs

Able To Reach Tight Corners

The multi-tool is not only capable of doing many different kinds of jobs, it is capable of doing jobs that used to be extremely difficult. For instance, sawing off a rusted-on nut can be a really difficult task because it’s so hard to get at the nut for sawing - but a thin bi-metal blade attached to the multi-tool makes the job easy.

It is particularly adept at reaching into tight corners and spaces where little room for hand movement is available. Its side-to-side oscillating action accomplishes the task without the need for any kind of human hand action, such as a back-and-forth sawing motion, and that means it can get into places that are barely wider than its blade.

Variable Speeds, Accessories Allow Work on Different Surfaces

Not Dependent on Power Cord

Most multi-tools have variable speed settings, which allow them to be more precise in the task of the moment. High speed settings give the multi-tool more power to accomplish difficult tasks, and lower oscillation rates allow it to be more precise in the task at hand.

Many models of the multi-tool are available as cordless tools which increases their usefulness in tight spots and as a portable tool that can go anywhere to get the job done.

Works with Accessories from Other Manufacturers

Oscillation (Vibration) Now Disturbs Arms Less

Recent Improvements Make It Run Quieter

As mentioned above, once the patent expired a whole slew of manufacturers began marketing multi-tools - and the accessories to be used with them. These accessories are often interchangeable and need not be made by the actual manufacturer of the multi-tool - so many other brands of accessories can be used with the multi-tool you already own.

Some multi-tools of the past would oscillate (vibrate) so strongly that arms and hands would become easily fatigued just by holding them, especially for long-running tasks. In recent years, this annoying flaw has been largely eliminated, so that even at high speeds the oscillating tool does not cause arm fatigue.

Another early drawback to multi-tools was the loudness during operation, and this has also been addressed by manufacturers in response to consumer complaints. Most models now run much more quietly, and do not require the ear protection that they did in former times.

Seeing is believingIf all this makes the oscillating multi-tool sound a bit like the Super Tool of modern times - it just might be! There are lots of power tools that can do a single job well - a drill for instance - but there just isn’t another tool that can do so many jobs with the kind of power, precision, and sheer ease that an oscillating multi-tool can. Already many skeptics have been won over just by trying it themselves. Seeing (and using) really is believing!
