DESCRIPTION

This single-family house outside of Boston, Massachusetts pays homage to the Rachel Raymond House designed by her sister Eleanor Raymond, FAIA. Entrants in the AIA 2009 COD Ideas House competition were asked to use the program as a guide to create a contemporary interpretation of this house using sustainable strategies noted in the Living Building Challenge. The subsequent design uses passive systems related to orientation, landscaping, and façade openings in order to fully implement natural systems. In addition, the south façade can be transformed into a heat capturing double envelope, which either allows for insulation in the summer or additional heating in the winter. Other strategies include the organization of circulation and storage on the north side of the house creating a barrier to the harsh north winds in the winter. The idea of a typical orthogonal arrangement has been broken down the center of the plan and torqued in order to contemporize and energize the space within.
