The Building

The Jarmulowsky Bank BuildingDesignated by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2009, the S. Jarmulowsky Bank Building is a landmark building with a rich history, a powerful symbol both of the age in which it was built and the area in which is located. Once the tallest building in the Lower East Side it was known as “The Temple of Capitalism” named for the easy credit Sender Jarmulowsky offered to immigrants to establish a footing in their new homeland.

The Founder

Sender Jarmulowsky (1841-1912)S. Jarmulowsky was a pioneer, a philanthropist and a community man. He was known to grant loans based on character as much as credit.
