Child Safety Statement

Newport Gardens Primary School is committed to a zero tolerance of child abuse and creating an inclusive school culture that promotes child safety. Our vision of Nurturing Our Future supports our focus of including people of all abilities, and promotes the cultural safety of individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Dear Parents,

This morning 34 grade 6 students left a cold and somewhat foggy Melbourne and started their trip to

what will be a colder and probably foggier Canberra! Mr. Murphy tells me they were very excited and

ready for a very interesting week in our nation’s capital. Thank you to the parents who had the chil-

dren ready to leave school at 7am and a very big thank you to the staff for leaving their family for the

week to take the students away.

A reminder that tomorrow night is our 2018 Prep Information session. This event will be held in the

main building from 6pm. If you know of any families not already connected to our school, please en-

courage them to come along and hear from our prep teachers about the programs we offer. If you al-

ready have children enrolled at our school, you are most welcome to attend however the information

will be similar to previous years.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Year 7 secondary school preference forms from grade 6 students

are due back this week. To date we have approximately half the forms. With the majority of grade 6

students away on camp, we do ask that parents arrange for the forms to be back at school before the

close of business on Friday.

Further into this newsletter is a flyer explaining our upcoming Expo night for all families. Please have a

careful read of the flyer and try to book the date into your calendar. We would love to see as many

parents at the event as possible to share in the learning achievements of our students.

This week is NAPLAN week. NAPLAN will be conducted on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this

week. Our staff have been ensuring the students are aware of the assessment’s format; they have been

unpacking the language associated with the assessments and ensuring the students understand it is

one assessment on one day. NAPLAN results will be available later in the year, and will be distributed to

all parents as they arrive.

May 16th is our next scheduled School Council meeting. This meeting will also be our Annual Public

Meeting where the 2016 Annual Report will be tabled. Parents are welcome to attend; alternatively,

the 2016 Annual Report will be uploaded to our school’s website after the meeting.

Finally a thank you to those parents who have been trying to use the Basil Street and Rosshire Road

gates. Unfortunately the recent rain has made the ground very wet and therefore these gates have

remained closed for the time being. We will let you know when we will again be using these entrances

and appreciate the efforts of parents in trying to use these.

BEFORE/AFTER SCHOOL CARE

Monday to Friday 7:00 - 9am / 3:00 - 6pm. If you would like to make a booking or would like any

information on the After School Care Program please do not hesitate to call 0411 656 074

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Play on Basketball will be running for six sessions as of 5th of May. If you do not want to pay for both after school care and basketball, children need to be picked up from after school care within 10 minutes of the basketball session finishing. We are now introducing the traffic light behaviour model at OSHClub. This will help children in making the right choices in regards to their behaviours and the way they treat each other. So far this has been a good way for children to take responsibility for their actions. Please continue to remind children in the mornings if they going to attend after school care to reduce confusion. Just a quick reminder that children are most welcome to bring in their own personal toys or cards to the program but please make sure that they know it is their responsibility to take care of those items as it is our number one priority at OSHClub to make sure children are safe and engaged with activities. Thanks for your understanding with this request.

Fun at OSHClub

Have a lovely week!

Newport Gardens OSHClub team.
