Once again, the Heralds are among the top ten barbershop choruses in the world, having placed 8th at the Interna-tional convention in Salt Lake City. With 51 members on stage, we were much smaller than last year at the Orlando International Convention. But based on
feedback from a variety of sources, our performance was even more impactful than last year. The audience reaction to our ballad “If Ever I would Leave You” was wonderful, and reflected the emotional involvement of every single performer.
The rehearsal sessions in SLC were unique, to say the least. With Tony unable to vocalize (except for very brief phrases, and very softly) due to vocal surgery the previous week, our focus and riser discipline had to be as sharp as possible. The guys stepped up to the task. Our singing and performance continued to improve throughout the week. And despite a very competitive field (going in we were seeded 11th based on qualifying scores), we were able to move up a few spots.
We will now take the rest of July off from rehearsals, and come back on Aug 5th. When we reconvene, we will look forward to working on some new repertoire and preparing for several upcoming performances. And we will have a Guest Night on August 26th as well. It’s great to be a Herald!Ralph Brown

The Heralds Place 8th in the World!
At the recent International Chorus Contest held in Salt Lake City, the Heralds finished in 8th place. This is significant for several reasons: First, several “big name” choruses returned to the contest this year after taking a year off (two of these choruses ended up finishing 3rd and 5th). Second, after combining with the Atlanta Vocal Project last year and putting 110 men on stage, this year the Heralds competed with 51 members of the Tampa chapter. Third, our Director Tony De Rosa was unable to talk for most of our time in Salt Lake City (more on that later).
One of our goals was total visual involvement from every man in the chorus, and this photos shows our success in that area!
Jazz hands taken to whole new level!

Tony’s StoryOn June 26 Tony underwent scheduled vocal surgery. Following the surgery he was under strict vocal rest, with literally no talking for several days – including our rehearsal days in Salt Lake City. With a combination of a device that “spoke” whatever he typed, and lots of pantomiming, Tony was able to com-municate with the chorus and lead us to a great performance.
He also did some coaching for other choruses, further demonstrating his amazing ability to communicate with-out words.
[Left] Greg Clancy, Director of the 2018 Champions Vocal Majority presents to Tony a copy of the arrangement the w would later sing during their swan song.
[Right] Wildfire Quartet, with Heralds member Stephen Gold-man (second from left) won the Next Gen Quartet Contest!Congratulations guys!
We were honored to share rehearsal facilities with the Vocal Majority. It was pretty inspira-tional to practice under their banner that dis-played their 13 Gold Medal championships.
On the table you can see the computer that Tony used to communicate with the chorus. He would type his thoughts and moments later it would be broadcast through our PA system. It took a great deal of concentration and focus from all chorus members – and it worked!

“Friends of the Heralds” (FOH) is a fund-raising program that is an important part of the Heralds yearly operating budget. Our mission is to preserve and further develop a cappella singing through musical excellence. FOH was established to help sustain Heralds of Harmony financial needs as we increase the number of singers on the risers and continue to improve our musical performance.
We are a non-profit organization supported by our perfor-mance ticket sales, dues and grants. Under the direction of Tony De Rosa, we will continue to offer the best musical and entertainment experience for our audience. In 2018, we placed 6th at the International Chorus Competition of the Barbershop Harmony Society, with our highest score ever.
Just as importantly, our chorus has seen a growth in youth members, bringing our total to more than 14 men under the age of 30.
The Heralds are poised to continue this significant growth and progression. FOH allows members, Alumni, as well as our friends, family and barbershop fans, to assist us on our musical journey and support our financial needs. If you would like to help in our endeavor with a tax-deductible contribution, please contact Ralph Brown at [email protected].
If you wish to write a check, please send to: Heralds of Har-mony; Treasurer - Bill Glasgow; P. O. Box 274076; Tampa, Florida 33688-4076.
We wish to thank the donors listed on this page for their generous contributions in 2018.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETINGSThe next Board Meeting is scheduled for August 13, 2019.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS Knowing words and notes on ALL current repertoire is the most basic
of musical commitments we make when joining the Heralds of Harmony.
While we are cognizant that this is (at heart) an individual commitment, the entire Music Team has agreed to collective-ly manage all to achieve a standard of being FULLY QUALIFIED on our current repertoire on a timely basis.
FULLY QUALIFIED DEFINITION: Every member of the Performing Chorus is expected to know 100% of notes and words on current repertoire (as well as any breath points assigned by Tony, or marked in the score) by the assigned “learn by date”.
Thank you for all your dedication, focus and hard work in Salt Lake City!See you on August 5!
Start thinking about guests you can bring on August 26th
