Small Ensembles

Keeping with tradition, I wanted to continue working with some small ensembles. Playing in a small

ensemble is very unique and provides students with greater musical opportunities. Players have to

know their individual parts and be able to understand how those parts fit into the overall ensemble

sound. In a small ensemble members typically have their own part that they do not share, so they

don’t have the luxury of relying on the student next to them to help out.

Brass Ensemble

Our 1st ever 8th grade brass ensemble members are Nick Mason, Caleb Smithberg, Cole Koxlien,

Julia Wahl, Logan Erickson and CJ Rislove. They are performing a song entitled Celebration in

Brass and it has been a lot of fun working with them and seeing their progress. They also earned a

Superior rating at solo and ensemble.

Horn Quartet

The horn quartet this year was not a difficult decision at all. I can say with some confidence that this

year’s horn section is the most complete I have had since starting here in 2008. Each player is

talented and they sound awesome as a section. Credit must be given to Ms. Jess Dineen who has

worked with them much of the last 3 years. The members are Julia Wahl, Gavin Thorson, Julia

Kauffman and Orion Caneff, and the song is entitled Folk Song.

Solo and Ensemble

Solo and Ensemble is one of my favorite times of the year. Student growth is at its highest

level, and it’s stressful and rewarding all at the same time.

Here is a list of this year’s students who achieved a superior rating at this year’s solo and

ensemble festival. A “Superior” rating is exemplary in all of the 5 judged categories.

Jazz Ensemble

Jazz ensemble has always been a love/hate relationship for me. I love working with kids who want to

do something extra and different, but I hate how little time we actually have to meet. I really believe

that if jazz ensemble were a class here at the middle school we would be one of the best in the state.

Our members are:

Saxophones Trumpets Trombones Rhythm

Kayla Sargent (Alto) Nick Mason Matt Blake Sydney Thies

Hayden Goodman (Alto) Caleb Smithberg Ian Olson Mitchell Vanyo

Hannah Sarazen (Alto) Cole Koxlien Grant Crank

Emily Flaten (Tenor) Adam Petske Drum Set Anthony Plechacek

Autumn Robinson (Tenor) Alexa Kromrey Nate Custer Alondra Harris

Nick Frazer (Baritone) Austin Smith Ellie Senn Jake Jacken

This year’s Eau Claire Jazz Festival was late in the calendar year and conflicted with the Student

Council trip to Washington DC. So, we competed at jazz fest with no tenors in our sax section! Our

kids did great and I was very happy with their performance. We earned 3rd place in our division

despite only getting together 1 hour per week. Great Year Jazz Students!

The nominees for the Robert Koepsel and Jess Dineen “Excellence in Music” award are selected for their

exemplary commitment to music and our department. These students excel at the qualities inherent to the

people for which these awards are named; leadership, musicianship, dedication, and determination. To qualify

for the award and scholarship students must have demonstrated a consistent willingness to go above and

beyond the expectations of their classroom and ensemble in their years here at CFMS. Students must also be

committed to continuing their music experience and sharing their talents and abilities in the many ensemble

choices at our high school. Choosing the nominees is a difficult task, but narrowing it down to one has been

nearly impossible.

THE NOMINEES FOR THE ROBERT KOEPSEL “EXCELLENCE IN MUSIC” AWARD ARE:

Mitchell Vanyo has been an outstanding student in our department each of the last 3 years. He is a

member of our 8th grade percussion section and has also been an outstanding addition to this year’s

jazz ensemble. He leads by example and completes even the most difficult music assessments with

ease. He is a gifted musician who works hard and he will be missed next year.

Caleb Rislove is one of the best tuba players we’ve had come through our program. CJ provides a

solid foundation for the band as a low brass player and truly enjoys his role in the ensemble. His quiet

demeanor and commitment to music has made him an excellent example for others. He is a member of

our brass ensemble and earned the highest possible rating (Superior) at our solo and ensemble festival

in March.

Nick Mason is an outstanding 8th grade trumpet player whose dedication to becoming better at his

instrument is unparalleled. If Nick could practice trumpet 24 hours a day, I think he would. He

started the year with the nickname ‘blast-a-tron’ as he had no problems playing at maximum volumes

all the time, but since then he has really matured as a player and human being. He is an integral part

of our jazz and brass ensembles and seems to always be in a good mood.

Aidan Detienne is a percussionist who is mature beyond his years. His passion for excellence does

not only shine through in music class, but in all of his activities. His easygoing attitude and his

willingness to play whatever is needed are refreshing; particularly in a section of 13 that traditionally

has only 5 written parts. Aidan also received a Superior rating at our solo and ensemble festival.

Victor Labelle doesn’t say much, but he is a talented alto saxophone player who very rarely needs

additional help. He is the type of student who can play and do anything you give him with relative

ease. He is the type of student that challenges me to come up with new and interesting assessment

opportunities. And, he is the type of student who makes an excellent candidate for this award and

scholarship.

THE NOMINEES FOR THE JESS DINEEN “EXCELLENCE IN MUSIC” AWARD ARE:

Victoria Dodge is an accomplished flute player who also happens to be a wonderful cello player. Her

attitude and talents are consistently exceptional and her contributions to this department as a whole

have been outstanding. Tori has been a true pleasure to have in class and will undoubtedly be

successful in whatever career she pursues in life.

Mikayla Runge is without a doubt one of the strongest players in our band. What makes her unique

is her outgoing personality and her ability to play the baritone better than most her age. Mikayla is a

strong-willed student who won’t let anyone steer her off the course of greatness. She will be fun to

watch develop as a leader and musician over the next four years. She earned a Superior rating at solo

and ensemble and is a member of our brass ensemble.

Kayla Sargent is an alto saxophone player in both concert band and jazz ensemble. She is an

extremely hard worker and I am always amazed at how quickly she can master her music

responsibilities. She has been a leader for our younger jazz members and has no fear when it comes to

solo playing….well, probably a lot of fear, but it doesn’t show when she performing for a room full of

people. Kayla is also earned a Superior rating at solo and ensemble.

Sydney Thies is one of the smartest 8th graders I know. She is an outstanding musician on two very

difficult instruments, piano and oboe. She, like Mitchell Vanyo, makes all my classroom assessments

look easy. She has a huge piano feature for our jazz ensemble that she has been working on since last

summer. She has also helped us teachers organize our music library. Sydney has the kind of talent

and work ethic that only comes around once every so often.

Ellie Senn is an outstanding percussionist and jazz band drum set player. Students and adults are

drawn to her bubbly personality and positive outlook. She is a hard worker who enjoys playing in the

ensemble and is always eager and ready for new challenges. Her mantra, along with her friend Ella is,

‘If you can believe, you can achieve!’ and she says it every day when she comes to class.

Congratulations to all the nominees. Your dedication

and attitude have made this year memorable for me.

Your level of skill shows years of patience and hard

work. This is just the beginning….as you move forward

continue to excel and inspire the people with whom you

come in contact. – Mr. Collicott

Trivia

Which of the following completes the acronym CFMA?

Canadian Folk Music Awards

Caribbean Film & Media Academy

Chippewa Falls Music Association

Church Furniture Manufacturing Association

Construction Financial Management Association

California Fire Mechanics Academy

The answer is all of them, but only one can offer you the opportunity to make a difference in

your child’s high school experience by getting involved, staying informed and volunteering.

What Is CFMA?

CFMA is an essential non-profit, volunteer parents group that supports the entire Senior High

School Music Department’s activities. As a member of CFMA, you will support the department

by volunteering for, organizing and working music events that raise money for items not

covered by the school district’s budget such as grand pianos, tubas, choir risers, and string

basses. Additionally, money is made available for student scholarships to summer music

camps.

Whether you have a lot of time, or a little time your individual strengths are what make

CFMA successful. Here are some of the things needed throughout the year.
