Applied Learning StylesLearning styles have access to our brain systems that receive, process and re-or-

ganise information. Although we inherit a learning style which is as unique as “a

signature” (Kinsela, 1995) success in learning (and language learning) lies in “style

stretching” (Cohen, 2002), the ability to extend our preferred modes using multiple

approaches for the input and output of information. Language teachers then have

to engage learners in activities that make them aware of their learning potentials

through using more than their stereotypical styles.In the rst part of this workshop, I will revise the main ideas of learning styles withemphasis on the perceptual lters. In the second part I will demonstrate, with theaid of the participants, a number of activities that can be used in classroom for the

style-stretching, again with emphasis on the sensory channels. The activities target

dierent skills and language items and the participants will be able to learn thebasic ingredients of how to make their lessons more “learning-style sensitive” and

the language activities more “learning-style orientated”.

Make the Grade!How can you report or record your students’ successes and failures in listening or

writing skills? How can you explain to parents their children’s recent advances in

their “interlanguage” (Selinker, 1972)? “It is a myth”, you repeat to yourself, that

language testing, aka psychometrics, can predict skill development. Is there a kind

of a “gauge” for things like “lesson participation”, “contribution” or “team spirit”?

What about discipline? Should hyper-lively learners lose marks when they get a bitout of hand? These are worries we call: language assessment (= …the collection of

any data that can be used to assess the language abilities of respondents… (Cohen,

1994)). However, as we busy ourselves with lesson plans and exam standards, we

neglect this vital area of our art (Schon, 1991). Thus, we either resort to the tra-

ditional, informal impression assessment approach of recording “oral marks” (sic)

and test scores or we wed assessment and exam coaching (rendering ourselves to

“exam coaches”).

This talk presents an alternative assessment instrument I have devised that I call:

“Excellent”, which uses continuous assessment to record language performance

progress (aka edumetrics). This new form of assessment - also referred to as

“teacher assessment”, (Leung, 2008) – focuses more on measuring learners’ abilityto use language holistically in real-life situations and is typically carried out contin-

uously over a period of time. “Excellent” is paired with “Mentoring”, a standarised

but dynamic process for students and parents brieng at separate or commonmeetings. With “Mentoring” students are coached to use language assessment as

a vehicle to reach language learning autonomy and independence. Parents are also

beneted from the clarity and systematicity of the process.
