IMMACULATE CONCEPTION - OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELPCATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF NORTH EVERETT

December 20, 2020 | Fourth Sunday of Advent

  • A special congratulations to Deacon DuaneSchireman who was ordained yesterday. Afterpreparing for the last 4+ years he and twenty otherDeacons were ordained by Archbishop Etienne at St.James Cathedral in Seattle. I hope many of you hadthe opportunity to watch the Ordination on thelivestream link. Ordinations are always very movingcelebrations, especially when the candidate laysface down for the prayer over them. It is a visiblesign of them laying down their life before God, in asense, a death to their former way of life and aresurrection into a new life. As the prayer ofordination is prayed over them, they are changed intheir innermost being in the same sense as whensomeone is Baptized. They came in Confirmed adultCatholics and will leave as Deacons of the Church.

I didn’t want to say anything too soon because younever know how assignments will go, but we areblessed to have Deacon Duane assigned to ourparishes for his initial assignment. As you learnedwith Deacon Matt Zuanich and Deacon Dennis Kelly, initial assignments can be for a lifetime, butsometimes the Archbishop asks for help in anotherarea, so we pray to have Deacon Duane for as longas God, and the Archbishop 😊, are willing. DeaconDuane will be preaching at least once a month atour English Masses and will be helping us with a lotof other ministries. As I’m sure you all remember,Deacons can baptize people, do funerals andweddings without Masses so if some of those comeup, you’ll probably get to see him in action. Theycan also read the Gospel at Mass and are theOrdinary minister of Communion, so when he servesat Mass, you’ll always get to see him in action.

As our way of showing our congratulations andappreciation for his ministry, the parish boughtDeacon Duane his first set of Deacon stoles. When adeacon serves at Mass, he often wears a robecalled a Dalmatic. It looks like the one a priest wearsexcept it has two sleeves. Dalmatics come withstoles of their own, so that they match, but when aDeacon serves outside of Mass, they don’t wear theDalmatic but rather an independent stole. We gotDeacon Duane the stoles that he will use foreverything except Mass. Having a similar set ofpriestly stoles, I can tell you that you end up gettingmore use, particularly of the white one, out of theindependent stoles because there is a lot that goeson in the Church world. This is an exciting event forus all as we get to participate in this transformativestep in the life of the Church. CongratulationsDeacon Duane.
