INTERNATIONAL SUNBONNET SUE, 79" x 93", made by the author

Fabric RequirementsThe more fabrics used in this Sunbonnet
Sue quilt, the better! Fabrics and colors vary
all over the world. Try to fi nd special bits and
pieces that really relate to a given place or sym-
bol. Remember to consider contrast and texture
when choosing fabrics.
For the sample quilt, which is 79" x 93", you
will need (this is generous yardage):
Appliqué: small scraps for each block.
These can come from your stash or
you can enjoy shopping for fat eighths.
Background: 4¹⁄₂ yards
Sashing and outer border: 3 yards
Cornerstones and inner border:
1¹⁄₃ yards
Backing: 5¹⁄₂ yards
Binding: 1¹⁄₈ yards (bias cut binding)
Note: Look closely at the sample quilt blocks
to see how I used fabric to really bring out cer-
tain features. For example, the “argyle” sock on
Scotland Sue is a strip of plaid fabric. To make
Sherlock Sue’s magnifi er look like glass, I used
netting instead of fabric.
Cutting and SizingBlock Background (7¹⁄₂" x 9¹⁄₂" fi nished)
u Cut 49 background pieces 10" x 12". One
yard of 40" fabric will yield 12 blocks. When the
appliqué is complete, trim the blocks to 8" x 10".
Sashingu Cut 56 pieces 2" x 8".
u Cut 56 pieces 2" x 10".
Cornerstonesu Cut 64 pieces 2" x 2".
Note: It is best to measure the width and
length of the completed quilt top through the
center and then cut borders. If you prefer to
cut borders in advance, these measurements
worked for me.
Inner Border u Cut 2 pieces 1¹⁄₄" x 66¹⁄₂" for the top and
bottom borders.
u Cut 2 pieces 1¹⁄₄" x 79" for the side borders.
Outer Borderu Cut 2 pieces 7" x 79¹⁄₂" for the top and
bottom borders.
u Cut 2 pieces 7" x 80¹⁄₂" for the side borders.

stopping the stitching ¹⁄₄" from the corners. Mi-
ter the borders, then fi nish sewing.
