The 44th annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve Service for Morton Grove and its neighboring suburbs is a “landmark” event. It is a celebration of an Ameri-can "dream," that, while constantly tested, remains an all embracing hope. Thanksgiving, more than any other holiday, challenges us to share the "dream" and be grateful. Let us allow gratitude to extend an inclusive welcome to neighbors of different creeds, races, and cultures. In our diversity we, as people of faith and good will, can find harmony and compas-sion. We can provide support for the needy. Few commentaries have been more eloquent in ex-pressing the spirit of Thanksgiving than the pamphlet America’s Table. America’s Table was published in partnership with the American Jewish Committee, NAACP, the National Conference for Community and Justice and other religious or ethnic organiza-tions. As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, America's Table offers us “food for thought.” In some parts of the world, our differences would be threatening. We feel enriched. In America, our differences resonate in our names, language, food, and music. They in- spire art and produce champions and lead- ers. We feel free to disagree.

We are a family, and what is a family gather- ing without debate? We believe in fairness. In America, the loudest voice does not al- ways have the last word, and every voice has a right to be heard. We act with hope. Not because life is perfect, but because we are free to face life, and all its imperfections, on our terms. We rely on faith.

In a sturdy and tested framework of law and government that works because of the confi- dence we place in it and in each other. On Thanksgiving Eve, I have attended Ecumenical, Interfaith and Interreligious Services almost every year of my thirty-eight year ministry. After leaving Skokie, I was pleased to find a well-established inter-faith tradition in Morton Grove. This year's service will be hosted by St. Martha Catholic Church in Morton Grove. St. Martha's is celebrating its Fiftieth Jubilee. The choice of site is a reflection of the overall theme of thankfulness. Prot-estant, Catholic, Jewish and Muslim participants will offer prayers and reflections. Rabbi Kenneth S. Cohen of the Northwest Suburban Jewish Congrega-tion will preach. The offering will be presented to the Salvation Army.

I hope St. Isaac Jogues Parish will be well repre-sented at the Interfaith Service. I truly am honored to accept the invitation. "Give Thanks and Praise to God." -Fr. Luczak

SPIRITUAL LIFE

LITURGICAL MINISTERS’ MEETINGS AND GATHERING The annual Liturgical Ministers’ Gathering will be on Tuesday, November 18th, at 7:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Room with a multi-media presentation by Joseph Durepos on St. Paul. Please note that Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, and Ushers will have ministry meetings beginning at 6:45 p.m. (Ushers) and 7 p.m. (EM and Lector). We look forward to being with you! TO COMFORT AND REMEMBER Parishioners who have experienced the death of a family member or friend in the past year or who are ob-serving the death anniversary of someone dear to them are invited to the annual Bereavement Prayer Ser-vice on Sunday, November 23rd, at 3:00 p.m. in Church. The service will include an honoring of the mem-ory of those who have died with a calling of their names and the giving of a small remembrance to those who grieve their passing. If you plan on attending the Prayer Service and would like your spouse, family member or friend’s name called, please contact the RE Office, 847/966-1180, by Wednesday, November 19th, and give the name and its spelling. These names will also be included in the Prayer Service booklet. After that date you may still call in the name and participate in the service, but we will be unable to include it in the booklet. You are also welcome to bring a photo of your loved one to be placed on a table during the service. All parishioners are welcome to be part of this time of prayer as we comfort, support and encourage one another in the sure and certain hope Christ’s Resurrection gives. Hospitality will follow in the Holy Family Room.

On Sunday, November 23rd, during the 7:30 a.m. Mass we will celebrate the reception of baptized Christian Leigh Ann Costello into the full communion of the Catholic Church. Sponsored by her husband, Bob, and sup-ported by the RCIA team Leigh Ann will pray the Creed with the community, make her profession of faith, and then be confirmed by Fr. Luczak. Later in the Mass she will receive the Body and Blood of Christ for the first time. Please continue to pray for Leigh Ann and to welcome her as she shares faith and life with us and with our community. CHRISTMAS WREATH SALE The Christmas Wreath sale, to benefit the pro-life work of The Women’s Center, will be held the weekend of November 29 & 30. It’s a special way to help call our community to prayer as we await the coming of the Lord in this season of quiet anticipation and hope-filled preparation.

Matthew 25:31-46 ABOUT NEXT WEEK’S READINGS EZEKIEL: “Ezekiel was an Old Testament prophet who ministered to the Jewish people exiled in Babylon. In this passage Ezekiel uses a popular biblical image of God, that of a shepherd who cares for the sheep. Eze-kiel reminds the people that the role of the shepherd is also to exercise good judgment.” I CORINTHIANS: “In his first letter to the Corinthians Paul addresses problems his converts in the community are experiencing. Some members had questioned the bodily resurrection of Jesus and our own resurrection as well. This passage is Paul’s response.”

November is American Diabetes Month Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects the body’s ability to produce insulin or utilize it properly thus affect-ing the metabolism of sugar. There are three major types – Type 1 or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (a.k.a. IDDM/ juvenile-onset diabetes), Type 2 or non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM/ adult on-set diabetes) & Gestational. In Type 1, the body destroys its own insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. Thus, the affected person must take insulin shots. In Type 2, the beta cells produce insulin, but the body’s cells don’t use it properly (insulin resistance). These people need to exercise & manage their diets & may have to take oral medication. Some pregnant women develop Gestational diabetes – a type of glucose intol-erance. For the protection of their babies, these moms-to-be require treatment to normalize their blood sugar levels. Each year, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) uses the month of November to raise awareness. Why? Because 20.8 million Americans have it and 6.2 million don’t know it!! Although the ADA wants to get the word out to EVERYONE, the focus of this year’s campaign is kids! How come? Because • diabetes is “one of the most common chronic diseases in children – nearly one child out of every 400-600 develops it” (1) • “the risk of developing Type 1 diabetes is higher than virtually all other severe chronic diseases of child-hood” (2) • “symptoms of Type 1 diabetes can mimic the flu in children” (2) • “there is a higher incidence of Type 1 diabetes in Caucasians than other racial groups” (2) • “Type 1 diabetes is manageable with daily injections and diligent monitoring…” (3) and “family support” (2) Peace, Pat Kellen, RN, Parish Nurse Advocate Health Care/ St. Isaac Jogues Source: American Diabetes Month: Why Should You Care about Diabetes? Rev. Andrew E. Luczak, Pastor St. Isaac Jogues Parish Dear Andrew, As Thanksgiving approaches one month from now, this occasions me to thank you, your staff and your parish family for your continued and generous support to us here at Maternity BVM. My mantra continues here: Great people, great staff, great ministries, no money but the Lord provides. Our October count is over 1500, our parish and Sunday schools are thriving yet the financial stress re-mains. Your support helps the church side of our budget which is lean without a business manager and with only 3 FT staff (2 priests and a secretary) and some PT. Even our Sunday school staff has only 2 PT. Our school budget has support from the AOC and Big Shoulders but both church and school still run "into the red". Sr. Patty, founder/director of our bilingual Counseling Center here which serves our deanery parishes, acts as our liaison with our sharing parishes. Both she and I would be available to share with your parish family the good news of BVM if you would want to invite us. Albeit with a limited staff and lay leadership we are nevertheless game for a sharing activity or more as well. Finally, if you come across someone who would like to help our inner—city school (K-8, 175), do so let us know. A Blessed Thanksgiving to you and your parish family! Rev. Thomas N. Pelton, pastor

ADDING NAMES TO THE PARISH SICK LIST It has always been the policy of St. Isaac Jogues to offer our parish community an opportunity to pray for those parish-ioners who are ill and in need of our prayers. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the cor-rect spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill — but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our con-gregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
