Aluminium BahrainSmelter and CalcinerMonday September 20 2010Aluminium Bahrain has been at the heart of Gulf aluminium industrygrowth for several decades, from its inception as a modest 58,000tonne plant back in 1968 to its state-of-the-art Line 5 added in 2005,which has boosted capacity to more than 830,000 tonnes, withconsideration being given to further expansion to 1.2m tonnes. As wellas its reduction lines and cast houses, the company has a dedicatedcarbon department and a 1500MW power plant. A 450,000 tpy cokecalcining plant and a water desalination plant are also in operation atthe company’s marine terminal.

Delegates will depart the conference hotel at midday on September 20for the short bus trip to the smelter and calciner sites.

Gulf Aluminium RollingMill CompanyMonday September 20 2010Gulf Aluminium Rolling Mill Company (GARMCO), owned by thegovernments of Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Iraq,commenced operation in 1986 with a nominal capacity of 40,000tonnes per year of common alloy sheet and coils. By 1988, GARMCOproduction had exceeded its design capacity and has since beenexpanded to over 165,000 tpy, with higher added value items such asfoil stock, computer components, building products and circles beingadded to the product range. The company is now planning its nextmajor expansion, which will boost capacity to 320,000 tpy in the firststage and to over 465,000 tpy subsequently with the use of moderntechnology and increased hot and cold rolling capacity

Delegates will depart the conference hotel on the morning ofSeptember 20 for the short bus trip to the rolling mill. The plant tourwill terminate at noon with delegates either returning to the conferencehotel direct or joining the Alba smelter visit in the afternoon (bookableseparately).

Qatalum aluminiumsmelterWeds-Thurs 22-23 September 2010Qatar Aluminium (Qatalum) is a 50-50 joint venture between QatarPetroleum and Hydro Aluminium. The greenfield aluminium smelter,located in Mesaieed Industrial City, commenced production of liquidaluminium from its potlines in December 2009, and will be the largestaluminium smelter ever to be built in one phase, with the ability toproduce 585,000 tpy of aluminium. The Qatalum complex includes acarbon plant, a state-of-the-art casthouse producing value-addedaluminium products such as extrusion ingots, foundry alloys andstandard ingots, as well as a port and storage facilities to handle theimports of alumina, coke and pitch, and a captive 1,350 MW powerplant. New cells will come online throughout 2010, reaching fullproduction capacity of 585,000 tonnes when all 704 cells are inoperation by fourth quarter 2010.

Delegates will fly from Bahrain to Qatar on the evening of September22 for an overnight stay in the capital, Doha, before visiting the smelterthe following morning.
