“Team Exile Talk”

Social Studies (Mr. Wolfe)

3rd Quarter

Math (Mr. Rieck) During the 3rd quarter in Mr. Rieck’s Math class, we had a stu-dent teacher from NKU, Miss Luck, who took over for Mr. Rieck. Miss Luck taught surface area and vol-ume using many neat and fun ac-tivities. We used clickers and cell phones to help us review topics. We will be sad when Miss Luck leaves after Spring Break and Mr. Rieck takes over again.

Mr. Wolfe's social studies classes spent the first half of 3rd quarter studying the Middle Ages of Europe. Over the last several weeks, the students have been studying the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance in Europe as well as the Reforma-tion and Counter-Reformation. Mr. Wolfe's students are currently learning about the Age of Exlpora-tion and the beginnings of Euro-pean colonization.

Math 7+ (Mr. Bare)

Mr. Bare’s honor’s math class began the third quarter studying 2-D and 3-D geometric shapes. The unit concluded with an activity where the students de-signed their community’s swimming pool. Students have also worked hard this quarter by simplifying expressions and equations along with solving and graphing inequalities.

The third quarter in science has been incredibly busy! We continued to do a lot of labs and group activities as well as our weekly Grab Bag review. We are determined to maintain our 6th grade sci-ence knowledge! Students finished a unit on hered-ity and genetics and studied how genes and traits get passed down through generations. We worked with pedigree charts to investigate how diseases can be traced through many generations. We also learned about modern genetics and the role of ge-netic engineering in today’s technological world. We even had 2 guest speakers from Children’s Hospital talk to us about genetic counseling! Students were introduced to the tremendous amount of diversity on our planet as we studied the classification of living things and how living things have changed over time. The quarter went by so quickly as we im-mersed ourselves into the science curriculum!

We continue to be very busy in Composi-tion working on our writing skills and us-ing all 8 parts of speech. We have also been strengthening our vocabulary and grammar skills so that our writing is strong and varied. This quarter we were very busy writing persuasive essays and presenting our topics to the class. Our goal was to establish a clear position, re-search for evidence, and support our po-sition with relevant details. We have also been working diligently to prepare for the OAA. We are confident in our ability to “out think and out work!”

Miss Chamoun (Literature)

Mrs. Ferrell (Composition)

3rd quarter proved to be very busy! Students started to review for the Ohio Achievement Assess-ment (OAA) with their Buckle Down review books. The goal is to teach students various test taking skills, such as context clues, reading strategies, and word origins, so students can be successful on the OAA. In addition to the OAA review, students will be starting their second and final novel of the year. The 7th grade literature classes will be read-ing Walk Two Moons. This novel is a popular book amongst junior high students, since they can relate to the changes and growth the main character faces. The honors class began reading Chinese Cinderella, a non-fiction novel. This novel enables students to experience the Chinese culture and feel the main characters physical and emotional pain. It is my hope that students will learn to enjoy non-fiction and understand that it can be read like a fiction novel.

Science Rules!! The best way to learn science is to do science! Whether working in groups or individu-ally, there is never a dull moment when it’s time to do a science activity!

Nothing like a “Cougar Hunt” to get the blood flowing!
