Before I start on this week’s spiel I must say that I had a great night at this year’s Quiz Night and think I can

speak for all who attended on that. We raised approximately $2300 so well done to all who attended the

night and contributed. A big thank you to all who helped put the night together but a special thank you must

go to Mark T for his efforts co-ordinating the evening, Sue for helping with the prizes and last but not least

former club member, Noel Speck, for his efforts as Quiz Master.

Our Guest Speaker at this week’s meeting was Rotary Peace Fellow, Juliet Ramzan, whose list of honours

and achievements were only surpassed by the list of Apologies. In addition to planned breaks, sickness has

taken its toll on the club. Juliette gave an insightful presentation on her Sri Lanka experiences, working with

the National Peace Council, attempting to develop resolutions on reconciliation between the previously

waring Sinhalese and Tamil peoples. For those that don’t know Sri Lanka has until recently been at civil war

between the Sinhalese people who are of Buddhist religion and the Tamil people who are Hindi. The war

lasted from 1983 – 2009 when the Sinhalese government led a massive offensive against the Tamil, which in

the deaths of many non-combatant civilians.

Juliette’s Reconciliation Report also involved her chairing meetings of differing religious parties attempting

to make peaceful resolutions for their future. Her report, although weak on accountability, was strong on

recommendations on reconciliation. Sadly nothing has been implemented as yet.

Her presentation was accompanied by some disturbing photos, which showed a people trying to recover as

best they can from this conflict.

We ran out of time for our game as it was such an interesting presentation, but fill in Sergeant Mark M had

plenty of fines to hand out so well done Mark.

Louise and I would like to thank those Rotarians who have passed on their condolences after the

passing of my mother. We also very much appreciate that Graham Holcroft and Julie and Ian

Carman we able to attend her funeral on Thursday along with the other 170 people.

Round 19 was to be the ‘Consistency Round’ - simply repeat the tipping score you achieved in

Round 18. How easy – you did it once, just do it again. Unfortunately only 2 people could achieve

the feat.

Another 2 people improved on their Round 18 score but everybody else cracked under the

pressure. In particular, Greg Schuetze, John Capoccia and Rosalie Hendrick who fell 4 tips short of

their round 18 effort. The 2 entrants who managed to repeat their Round 18 score were Tony

Ogbeide (Brownhill Creek) and Tegan Webb (Kent Town in Waiting).

Notably, Tony not only repeated his score but also repeated the method in which he achieved it -

he did not enter his tips either week and got the default (Away Teams) score of 4 each time.

Now, whilst voting in elections is compulsory in Australia, tipping is not. In fact, Tony’s effort is

possibly an endorsement for non-compulsory voting - if you don’t raise your expectations by

making a selection, sometimes you will be pleasantly surprised. Accordingly, I declare that ‘no tips’

is a valid entry, and by virtue of having the closest margin, Tony wins round 19.

By the way, congratulations to Mark Martin who topped Round 18 during a week when there was

no prize for this outstanding effort.

So on to Round 20. In recognition of the tippers who have toiled away brilliantly each week but

have not received any coin for their efforts, the Round 20 prize goes to the top tipper who hasn’t

yet won a prize. So anyone who has got their money back (or better) can relax as we share the joy

of winning a little more broadly. GOOD LUCK.


Rotary Youth Leadership Awards: RYLA

Right now applications are open for the 2012 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards - a scholarship

program run by the Rotary Club to empower young people with the skills and ambition to lead. It's

a week-long residential seminar, featuring extraordinary speakers from across Australia on topics

around leadership, public speaking, and other skills intended to equip awardees to become great

leaders. Best of all, it's all expenses paid thanks to Rotary, awarded to you on the strength of your

application.

Applications close very soon, and, sadly, we haven't had a great deal of interest this year. In fact,

there is a very real likelihood that RYLA 2012 may be called off due to lack of interest. The good

news is that you can help.

To attend RYLA, you must be aged 18 to 25, and you would like to:

• develop leadership skills

• improve your public speaker and

• become a valuable team member

We provide the digs, the grub and the speakers, but the one thing we need from you is the free

publicity. So please help us spread the word, and make sure the RYLA experience reaches those

who will benefit!

The deadline for applications has been extended to Monday September 3rd, so there's still time,

but please encourage potential awardees to get their applications in as soon as possible! So please

pass this information on to everyone you know who might be interested, and tell them to Apply

Now.

Editor’s Comment: Keith Abraham one of Australia’s leading motivational speakers was a young,

aimless Weed Controller working for a NSW North Shore Council, who’s live revolved around lunch

and tea breaks. One week of RYLA turned his life around.

the new program – and can now enrol our members and friends - and start to reap the

Members of the Club are enrolled as ‘Rovers’ (to happen over the coming week).
