Serial Records Serial: A publication in any medium issued in successive parts bearing numeric or chronological designations and intended to be continued indefinitely. Serials include periodicals; newspapers; annuals (reports, yearbooks, etc.); the journals, memoirs, proceedings, transactions, etc., of societies; and numbered monographic series. In the bib MARC records for serial titles, preceding and succeeding titles, if any, are shown in the variable fields, 780 and 785 fields. The "Dates" in the fixed field also show current (ex. 1989, 9999) or closed/ceased (ex. 1989, 1990). Serial Records: Serials change constantly and these are indicated in the record to show their relationships to one another. Most changes occur in the titles. Tracing serials is often like tracing a genealogy. In a well cataloged and properly coded record, the fields and indicators tell us about this relationship. In the 78x fields, the second indicators tell us what happened, e.g. whether this title was superseded, preceded, etc. by another title. The 78x fields also give us the ISSN and OCLC numbers (for linking purposes) so that once you find one title, it is easier to find the other titles in OCLC. I see the 78x fields as ”kids playing ring around the roses” and running around in a circle. All are linked together and the chain is broken when/if one kid falls. The DtSt and the Dates in the fixed field and the 260 and 362 fields in the variable fields tell us about the dates. DtSt: d (ceased publication); Dates: gives us the beginning and ending dates and so do the variable fields. 260 field - tells us the place and publisher of this item from beginning date to ending date. The 362 field – often gives us more details which include the beginning to ending vol., no., month and year. If your institution (or library) has a “run” of this item, it means that you will not only download the records that match the dates that your institution has but you will also make sure that each item is linked or attached to the correct bib record.

Serial Records

Serial: A publication in any medium issued in successive parts bearing numeric or chronological designations and intended to be continued indefinitely.

Serial Records:

Serials change constantly and these are indicated in the record to show their relationships to one another.

Here’s what MARC21 for Bib Formats says:

Fixed field: The DtSt: tells us that this publication has ceased to be published under this name. Dates: tells us which dates are covered by this particular bib record: from 1959-2006

Variable fields:

260 field - tells us the place and publisher of this item from beginning date to ending date (1959-2006)

362 field – gives us more details which include the beginning to ending vol., no., month and year.

780 fields – if you look at this record, two other records came before it: record # 5422122 (from 1930 to 1959); and #1590134 (from 1916-1974). One of these titles was our record #3 and the other, I pasted below as “other record”. You may use either record depending on a lot of factors such as your institution’s policy about which records to use; which dates cover your institution’s run; which record not only matches the item in hand but also provides better/fuller information; the item itself; and so on.

First indicator: 0 - Display note (you are telling the computer that you want the note as indicated by the second indicator to display in the OPAC so that the patrons may see it. Just as you will tell the computer in the 245 field second indicator how many spaces to skip before the first word in the main title.) Second indicator: 0 – Continues (means and will display that this title continues as … (new title).

Second indicator: 5 - Absorbed (means and will display as, this particular record (or title) actually absorbed another title, OCLC #: 1590134 (1916-1974). Now if you look at this record, OCLC #: 1590134, it will have a 785 field with first and second indicators, 04 (785 - succeeding title: not only was this title succeeded by this next title, it was absorbed by it. So, this previous title in the 780 field has ended.)

785 field - tells us the title that succeeded (i.e. that came after) this particular title. It also gives us the ISSN and the OCLC #.

Record #2: OCLC #78801520

Record #2 came after (succeeded) record #1 and tells us this in the 78x field and in all the dates fixed and variable fields as outlined above.
