Hello Neighbors! It seems like we were just celebrating our 75th Annual Fourth of July

Event and now the 76th is upon us. As you know these events are only successful if we all pitch in to help. By now you should have seen requests for volunteers through our list serv and on Facebook. If not, we are making another request in this edition. Please consider helping. In this time of long daylight hours and lovely weather, I want to encourage you all to take the time to get to know your neighbors. Knowing your neighbors is a great way to keep our community strong and healthy. For example, if you know your neighbors, you are more likely to notice something out of the ordinary and can check with them to see if everything is okay. I encourage you to introduce yourself to your neighbors at events in the neighborhood. In addition, I encourage blocks to plan and host block parties. The WNA has funds to reimburse the first 10 block parties scheduled each year. Finally, I wanted to remind those of you who are not WNA members that it is too late to turn in

your forms and dues. Neighbors dues support all of our programming, including the Fourth of July Event, the Courier, and other WNA activities. Forms can be found on our website: http://westmorland-neighborhood.net. As always, if you have any questions about the WNA or Neighborhood events, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or any of the other Board members, whose contact information is provided on the last page of the Courier.

The History of the EVP Coffee Shop Building3809 Mineral Point Road

Many long time Westmorland residents may remember Ellis’ True Value Hardware Store operated by Maury and Kay Ellis for thirty years at 3809 Mineral Point Raid. But the building itself has a much longer history in the neighborhood. The building was built by Bill Herling, Sr. in 1940 (Herling also owned Herling’s General Store and Bar, now the popular Village Bar, next door to the building from 1928 until 1944). Bob Waterman purchased the building and operated Waterman’s Food Shop in the building from July 1941 until January 1945. The grocery store offered a variety of groceries and included a fresh meat counter. Waterman sold the grocery store business to John Frederick and Jim Farrell in January 1945 (Waterman purchased Herling’s Bar in September 1944 and renamed it Waterman’s Bar). Frederick was the general manager and Farrell ran the meat department at the Village IGA Food Shop until 1951 when a new, larger Century Food Grocery Store opened next door at 3817 Mineral Point Road (currently the Wisconsin Geological Survey office) and forced the smaller grocery store to close. The next businesses at the location were Reigle Hardware from 1952 until 1957 and then Harley’s Hardware from 1957 until 1961. Maury and Kay Ellis purchased the business location in 1961 and ran Ellis’ True Value Hardware Store until 1990.The building then housed many different businesses

from 1991 until 2006 including:• Marvin: The Door and Window Design Center

(1991-1997),• Don Rippen & Associates Furniture and Interior

Store (2000-2002),• Clarity Consulting (2004-2007),• Goblin Fern Press (2005), and• Ken Crocker Design (2005)

In 2006, the popular EVP Coffee Shop moved into a portion of the building and eventually took over the entire first floor. EVP stands for the French term ‘Etes-vous prets? meaning “are you ready?”.

The article about Resurrection Cemetery in the March issue of the Courier was taken in part from Bishops to Bootleggers: A Biographical Guide to Resurrection Cemetery, More of the Ordinary and Famous Women and Men Who Shaped Madison and the World; Published by Historic Madison, Inc., 1999 and used with permission of Historic Madison, Inc. The History Committee has published a booklet on the history of the Village Bar. The 36-page, 43-photo booklet tells the history of the building that houses the Village Bar and the seven owners of the business from 1928-2017. Copies of the booklet are on sale for $4.00 only at the Village Bar.

Even though the Ellises don’t live right in Westmorland, their hardware store does. It has been a community landmark for 17 years. Ellis True Value Hardware, 3809 Mineral Point Road, opened for business on December 1, 1961. Originally the building housed The Westside IGA, according to Maury Ellis, but it had spent eight years in the hardware business even before he bought it.Not only is Ellis True Value a familiar name in the area, but it is also a long-time contributor to the Westmorland Community Association. Its ads appear both in the Courier and the Directory, and last July Ellis donated $100 to the Fourth of July fireworks fund.Ellis and his wife Kay now live at 534 Togstad Glen, but in the 1960s, they were Paunack Avenue residents. They have two children, Tim and Patti. The hardware business comes naturality to Ellis, possibly from experiencing it firsthand as a boy in Brooklyn, WI, where his father ran a hardware store. The Westmorland store has much of the same small town feel about it.“We are quite service oriented” Ellis said. “So many times, people can do the work around their houses, if they know what to buy and can get advice on what to do. Our store is there to give that help.”Ellis True Value features mainly hardware, kitchen, and other household items, but the more than 20,000 items

in the store also include toys and a variety of lawn care products as summer approaches.“We handle a lot of rentals,” Ellis added, “everything from rug and floor cleaners to sanders, drills, saber saws, staplers, and post hole diggers. Many rent for $1 a day and are items that aren’t too expensive, but the customer uses them so seldom that they aren’t worth a purchase.”The service idea is also carried through in the employees who quickly appear to help a customer. One employee, Wayne Hook, has been with the store for 15 years. Ellis employs one other full-time person and has four part-time workers, although he said there were twice that many to handle the summer trade.Good prices, plus service, Ellis readily admits, bring in customers. But to long-time Westmorland residents, Ellis True Value is still the name meaning “the place to go when I get stuck on a complicated job around the house.”That’s not a bad reputation to have after 17 years.Reprinted in part from a longer article in the Westmorland Courier, December 1978. Written by Paulette Sacksteder, Courier Editor.Maury Ellis passed away on April 7, 2014. Kay Ellis still lives in Waunakee, WI.
