POINT LOMA
There are, in fact, no real beaches on Point
Loma, but it’s one of the best places in San
Diego to meditate on waves crashing on
the cliffs and explore tidepools in the rocky
reefs full of marine life.
At the furthest tip of Point Loma, you’ll
find Cabrillo National Monument, a tribute
to explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who
led the brave expedition in 1542. The
monument—with panoramic views of the
bay and ocean—is also home to the Point
Loma Lighthouse and is the access point
to some of San Diego’s most impressive
tide pools.
OCEAN BEACH
Located just north of Point Loma, Ocean
Beach is a vibrant, bohemian neighborhood,
with a classic SoCal beach vibe. Surfers
and sunbathers fill the namesake beach,
while Ocean Beach Pier is a popular local
fishing spot with sweeping views.
Nearby, Newport Avenue is lined with
antiques shops, beachwear and surf
boutiques, organic groceries, taquerias
and brewpubs. The Ocean Beach Farmers
Market features live music.
PACIFIC BEACH
Pacific Beach is a neighborhood in San
Diego, bounded by La Jolla to the north,
Mission Beach and Mission Bay to the
south, Interstate 5 to the east and the
Pacific Ocean to the west. While formerly
largely populated by young people, surfers,
and college students, because of rising
property and rental costs the population
is gradually becoming older and more
affluent.
“P.B.,” as it is known as by local residents, is
home to one of San Diego’s more developed

The first Point Loma lighthouse was built in 1851, a year after California entered the Union. On November 15,
1855, its keeper lit the oil lamp for the first time to guide ships safely into the harbor.
The problem was that fog and low clouds often obscured its light from the sailors it was trying
to help. For that reason, on March 23, 1891, the keeper extinguished the lamp and moved his
family to the new lighthouse at the bottom of the hill about 100 yards south of the original
lighthouse.
