Stewardship Thought: “So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.” (Genesis 2:19)

The creation story reminds us of two important points. First, since the start, God has put the entire world into our care. Second, stewardship has been around since the beginning of mankind, it isn’t something recently invented by the Church. Just as past generations built our Church, it is now our responsibility to continue to nurture and develop these gifts for future generations.

SAINT OF THE WEEK SAINT EDWARD THE CONFESSOR

Born in Islip, England in 1003, Edward was the son of King Ethelred III and Emma, daughter of Duke Richard I of Normandy. When the Danes invaded England in 1013, Edward and his mother fled to Normandy. Ironically, the year after King Ethelred's death, Emma married Canute, the son of the Danish conqueror Sweyn. Young Edward stayed in Normandy, but on the death of his half-brother Hardicanute (son of Emma and Canute), Edward was crowned King of England. King Edward's reign was a time of peace and lower taxes, but conflict remained between Normans and Saxons. Toward the end of his life, King Edward became more interested in spiritual matters, and he was largely responsible for the construction of St. Peter's Abbey in Westminster, now the site of Westminster Abbey. He died in 1066 and was canonized by Pope Alexander II in 1161. King Edward is called a confessor because he "confessed" the Christian religion and followed its teachings, but he was not a martyr. We celebrate the feast of St. Edward the Confessor on October 13.

MISS BEHAVIOR OFFERS CONDOLENCES

Dear Miss Behavior: I really don't like going to calling hours, and I think we need to be cheerful and perky, so I usually don't do much of anything when someone I know has lost a loved one. I mean, we really need to get on with our lives, don't we? What do you think? Sincerely,

Pollyanna

Dear Pollyanna: As I look back over the years, I see myself in your comment. Yes, when I was younger, I would make up all kinds of excuses for not going to calling hours or funerals. Now, however, I am a woman of a certain age; I now know what the ancient Roman poet Virgil meant when he wrote in his great epic poem, The Aeneid, "Sunt lacrimae rerum, et mentem mortalia tangunt."* I now understand how very important it is to do whatever we can to make the death of a loved one easier for our relatives, friends and, yes, even our acquaintances. First, do make an effort to go to both calling hours and the funeral service. Even if you are not the closest of friends or relatives, attend if you can; the family will appreciate your presence. Sending a card is good; sending a card with a handwritten message is even better; sending a letter with your heartfelt words of sympathy may be the best idea yet. Often, friends take food to those who are grieving; what a splendid idea! Do check the obituary in the newspaper to see if the family has asked for memorial donations to a specific charity or cause. You may want to send flowers. Consider having a Mass said. My advice: do something, even if it is a little thing. If you are tongue-tied and don't know how to phrase your sympathy, just say, "I'm sorry that ___________ (fill in blank) has passed away." Sometimes we err by saying too much. (I may explain that in a future column; then again, maybe not.) However, in my view, your worst option is to do and/or say nothing, to pretend that nothing has happened. So please, at least say a few words of sympathy. Those words are very comforting and mean a great deal to the bereaved. And if you can do more, so much the better. So do as I say, and do as I do, and don't do as I used to do, and God bless!

Sincerely,

Miss Behavior

HURRICANE FLORENCE / TYPHOON MANGKHUT DONATIONS

Hurricane Florence has made landfall in the Carolinas. Catholic Charities USA is asking for donations to help with disaster response. Catholic Charities USA is the official domestic relief agency of the U.S. Catholic Church. CCUSA deploys disaster response experts to support local Catholic Charities agencies in their work providing direct assistance to affected communities and identifying long term recovery needs. The disaster response team along with the local knowledge and expertise of agencies throughout the United States and its territories, is mobilizing quickly and effectively in an emergency to aid those experiencing or recovering from disaster. Catholic Charities supports disaster response efforts with direct aid, home repair, home rebuilding, health care services and other programs that enable long-term disaster recovery.

Please make donations to Catholic Charities and on the memo line write Hurricane Florence Relief. Send the donation to Catholic Charities, 144 West Wood Street, Youngstown, OH 44503. 100 % of all monies collected go to the disaster relief. Please pray for the people affected by Hurricane Florence.

On September 15, Typhoon Mangkhut, made landfall on the Philippine island of Luzon with sustained winds of 125 miles per hour and gusts in excess of 155 miles per hour. Over 250,000 people were directly affected by the storm, with more than 150,000 temporarily displaced. Many communities still do not have power, and road access is limited. Immediate priorities include assistance with food, water, bedding and road clearance. CRS is working with local partners and Caritas Philippines to provide emergency assistance. CRS staff are on the ground in the most severely impacted provinces in North Luzon. CRS has allocated an initial $50,000 for this emergency, and staff will conduct a market assessment to determine the most effective response in collaboration with local partners.
