July 24: Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – Praying like Faithful Children How often have we encountered a small child persistently asking over and over for the same thing? How often have we ourselves done this with our Heavenly Father in prayer? Perhaps we think we shouldn’t take this approach, and yet Jesus Himself reminds us that persistence in prayer is really important. Pray always—like faithful children, let “Our Father” hear from us our deepest need. Persistent prayer is an act of love and trust in God. (CCC 2742) archstl.org/dynamic

From the Parochial Administrator’s Keyboard:
The saints walk with us on our journey with Christ. The stories of
their lives are important to us, but the relationships Christians
have had with them over generations, so often over the millennia,
is an important part of the story too. St. Anthony is a bit of an
odd choice to be the patron saint of lost thing, but as so many of
us know a prayer to St. Anthony is often answered. We can see
this in the example of today’s saint. This Sunday is the feast of
St. Charbel Makhlouf. St. Charbel lived in Lebanon from 1828 to
1898. He was a monk and hermit, basically the last 20 years of his
life he didn’t really interact with anyone. When he died people
knew he was holy, but they began to get an insight into how holy
he was when on the day of his funeral the rain fell everywhere
except around his coffin. Miracles followed! While he was ob-
scure during his life, St. Charbel is called on as a powerful inter-
cessor throughout the world now. When I spent a summer in
Mexico City, this Lebanese hermit’s statue was found in many
churches, and was often arrayed with signs of thanksgivings for
miracles received. While the saint spent much of his time in his
life in solitude and silence, many now consider him their friend in
prayer.
On Tuesday of this week we celebrate the feast of our patron,
St. Ann. We don’t know much for certain about St. Ann’s life, but
we know the stories Christians have shared over the centuries.
The names Joachim and Ann for the parents of the Blessed Virgin
Mary comes from a book called the proto-evangelion of James.
This book is very old, probably written around the year 170. No
one is an under any obligation to consider this story history, but
many saints have read the story and grown closer to God through
it. Many generations of Christians called upon the name of St.
Ann and found heavenly help as we do today. We meet St. Joachim
as an old childless man who goes to serve the temple as priest.
Joachim is publicly rebuked for being childless by the chief
priests. Instead of returning home to his wife he goes off into
the field ashamed of himself planning to live as a shepherd and
fast and pray. Ann is saddened for her husband, and for herself.
She crawls up under a tree in the garden and prays as well. An
angel appears to both of them promising that God has heard their
prayer and they will have a child. Joachim rushes home and Ann
runs out and meets him coming up the path and hugging him
tightly, “hanging about his neck,” she says “Now I know the Lord
has greatly blessed me!” In this tender moment of joy we are
called to celebrate God’s generosity and to imitate their faithful-
ness.
As a separate note: Next week we will have Fr. Daniel McCaffrey
speak on behalf of the missions. I have not heard him speak yet, but I
am excited. He is apparently an amazing speaker. He recently did a
parish mission at one of my former parishes and filled the church. We
are blessed to have such a talented speaker to call us to missionary
