We all know that exercise is good for us, but like many things we know we should do….actually accomplishing them is not always so easy. How do we find the motivation to exercise when it seems there are so many distractions and other things taking up time in our busy lives? A recent study by Dr. Michelle Segar, who directs the Sport, Health and Activity Research and Policy Center at the University of Michigan, says “The idea of exercise contributing to overall health and wellbeing is not an optimal way to make physical activity relevant and compelling enough for most people to prioritize it in their hectic lives.” Rather, immediate rewards that enhance daily life, such as having more energy, a better mood, less stress, and more opportunity to connect with family and friends, offer far more motivation. In a recent article in the New York Times, Dr. Segar explained that reframing the exercise experience, viewing it as a positive, restorative activity that will make you immediately feel better can help even people who say they hate to exercise or have repeatedly fallen off the exercise wagon to learn to enjoy it and stick with it.
The Senior Center of Jackson Hole has many different exercise classes Monday thru Friday, offering everything from “Leslie’s Fitness”, Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Yoga for Strength, to Tai Chi, Tai Chi for Balance, Pilates, Walking Group and Zumba. The classes are taught by certi-fied professionals, the suggested contribution is only $3 for people age 60+ and there’s the added social benefit of being with old friends and new, and encouraging each other while exercising. Good for the
brain, the soul, and the body. Dr. Segar suggests focusing on the idea that “everything counts” when it comes to exercise: taking the stairs, weeding the garden, dancing, even getting up to get a drink of water. “We should count any and every op-portunity to move that exists in the space of our lives as valid movement worth doing.” The doctor stresses that consistency trumps quantity when trying to establish the exercise habit. Whether you like to get outside this time of year, utilizing our beautiful hiking trails, the extensive, non-motorized pathways system or just stroll around the neighborhood, moving is simply the most important bit of self-care you can fit into your day. As Dr. Segar states, “Sitting appears to be the new smoking, a detri-mental habit that has a simple easy fix.” Citing the “paradox of self-care” Dr. Segar writes, “The more ener-gy you give to caring for yourself, the more energy you have for everything else.” She suggests viewing phys-ical activity as a power source for everything else you want to accomplish. “What sustains us, we sustain.” It’s never too late you know, so Get Moving!
