Precaut ionsSAFETY FIRST - TO ALL OPERATIONS PERSONNEL

General Conditions of UseThis product is designed and tested to comply wi th the requirements of IEC/EN61010-1 ‘Safety requi rements for e lect r ical equipment for measurement , cont ro l and laboratory use’ for Class I por table equipment and is for use in a pol lut ion degree 2 environment . The equipment is designed to operate f rom insta llat ion supply Category I I.

Equipment should be protected f rom liquids such as spil ls , leaks, etc. and precip i tat ion such as ra in, snow, etc . When moving the equipment from a cold to hot envi ronment , a l low the temperature of the equipment to stabil ize before the Uni t is connected to an AC power supply to avoid condensat ion forming. The equipment must only be operated wi th in the envi ronmental condi t ions specif ied in the product speci f icat ions.

This product is not approved for use in hazardous atmospheres or medical applicat ions. I f the equipment is to be used in a safety-related application, such as avionics or mi li tary appl icat ions, the sui tabi l i ty of the product must be assessed and approved for use by a competent person.

Refer a l l servic ing of Unit to Quali f ied Technical Personnel .

Safety Identification in Technical ManualThis manual uses the fo llowing terms to draw at tention to possib le safety hazards that may exist when operating or servic ing th is equipment :

Case, Cover or Panel Removal

Opening the Case Assembly exposes the operator to e lect r ical hazards that may result in e lect r ical shock or equipment damage. Do not operate th is Test Set w ith the Case Assembly open.

Equipment Grounding Protection

Improper grounding of equipment can result in e lect r ical shock.

Use of Probes

Refer to Performance Specif ications for the maximum voltage, current and power ratings of any connector on the Test Set before connecting i t wi th a probe f rom a terminal device. To prevent e lectr ical shock or damage to the equipment veri fy the terminal device per forms with in noted speci f icat ions before using i t for measurements.

DMM Measurement CategoryThe Digita l Mul t imeter (DMM) is c lassif ied in Measurement Category I I . Measurement Category I I is designated for equipment which per forms measurements on ci rcui ts d i rect ly connected to low voltage insta l lat ion.

Power CordsThe AC Power Cord included with the uni t, or an appropriate replacement, should be used to connect the Test Set to a grounded AC power supply. Fai lure to ground the Test Set may expose the operator to hazardous vol tage levels. To connect the Test Set to a Class I I (ungrounded) 2-terminal socket outlet, f i t the power cord wi th e ither a 3-pin C lass I p lug used in conjunct ion wi th an adapter incorporat ing a ground wire, or f it the power cord w ith a C lass I I p lug contain ing an integral ground wire. The ground wire must be securely fastened to ground; grounding one terminal on a 2-terminal socket does not provide adequate protection.Power cords must be in good operat ing condi t ion. Power cords must not be f rayed or broken, nor expose bare wiring. Using a damaged power cord may expose the operator to hazardous vol tage levels.

International Power RequirementsThe AC power cord must meet local regulat ions and power requi rements. Check w ith local standards and regulat ions to ensure the power cord being used meets a l l local safety regulations.

Use Recommended Fuses OnlyUse only fuses specif ica lly recommended for the equipment at the speci f ied cur rent and vol tage ratings. Refer to Performance Specif icat ions for fuse requi rements and speci f ications.

3.0 INSTALLATIONModels in the 7200 Ser ies are Safety Class 1 inst ruments that must be grounded before use. The Test Set should only be connected to a grounded AC supply out let .3.1 VentilationThe Test Set is a i r-cooled by two groups of fans that draw air through vents in the case. Do not obstruct the ai r vents whi le the instrument is in use. Avoid standing the instrument on or c lose to other equipment that is hot.3.2 Safety PrecautionsThe fo l lowing safety precaut ions must be observed dur ing insta l lat ion and operation. VIAVI assumes no l iabi l ity for fa i lure to comply wi th any safety precaut ion outl ined in th is manual .3.2.1 Complying with Instruct ionsInsta llat ion/operat ing personnel should not at tempt to insta ll or operate the Test Set wi thout reading and complying wi th inst ruct ions contained in th is manual . A l l procedures contained in this manual must be performed in exact sequence and manner described.

3.2.2 Grounding Power CordUse a 3-prong AC Power Cord to connect the Test Set to a grounded AC Power Supply.

I t is the customer's responsib il i ty to:• Have a qual if ied e lectr ic ian check receptacle(s) for

proper grounding.• Replace any standard two-prong receptacle(s) wi th

proper ly grounded three-prong receptacle(s). 3.2.3 Operat ing Safety

Due to potent ia l for e lect r ical shock wi th in the Test Set , the Case Assembly must be closed when the Test Set is connected to an external power source.

DO NOT USE A THREE-PRONG TO TWO-PRONG ADAPTER PLUG. DOING SO CREATES A SHOCK HAZARD BETWEEN THE CHASSIS AND ELECTRICAL GROUND.
