“Our Data Center facility was called Rockan or Stingray in English referring to the animal’s stealth and observation abilities.

In the early 70’s at the height of the Cold War, construction began on what was designed to become the Swedish Air Force’s radar command center outside Linköping. In Sweden military facilities are named after animals and civilian installations after flowers.

Our Data Center facility was called Rockan or Stingray in English referring to the animal’s stealth and observation abilities.

The construction process applied all the latest military and civilian technology

to create an installation that could not only survive a direct nuclear

strike, but also carry on its mission in a post-nuclear

environment.

One of the many interesting design features include a kilometer-long tunnel devised to divert a nuclear shockwave away from the inner areas of the center. In the transit area from the outer tunnels to the core area are decontamination zones where staff could shower off radioactive material and throw their clothing in radioactive bins for incineration.

Further features include a 100 000-liter diesel silo for running the facility during power outages. The facility even has infrastructure in place where it can maintain operations without opening its doors as new fuel can be refilled from the outside via pumps located in the blast tunnel. In the late 90’s during the second stage of construction, additional upgrades and a much larger inner area were created in order to improve the facility’s communications ability.

• The facility is situated 60 meters underneath a granite mountain able to withstand a 2.5 Megaton direct nuclear strike.

• Sweden has one of the largest fibre networks in the world covering Europe, Americas and Asia. The rates are favourable.

• Network uplinks consist of six fiber paths for 344 pairs, one satellite uplink and one microwave link.

• Circle fed power.

• Sweden has a legal system and laws that favour data security and data privacy. Law enforcement is obliged to follow these rules.

• Redundant Piller diesel generators.

• Flywheel UPS system

• PuE* < 1.1 vs industry standard of 1.7 (* Power Usage Effectiveness)

• Sweden top ranked in GPI (Global Peace Index)
