27 TRENDS IN DOCKER CONTAINER MONITORING

But when it comes to monitoring and managing these containers, most organizations are still learning how to best direct their resources, acquire the necessary skills, and modernize their tools and processes to make the most of their investments. Without this, they may lack the ability to easily and accurately access performance and impacts to deployment and services, and align those to business outcomes.

To better understand the state of container monitoring, we surveyed 100 executives and identified the top trends of containers. In this eBook, we’ll cover each trend, along with actionable guidance and next steps for mastering the monitoring of your container environment.

Application containerization is gaining popularity for organizations as a way to improve their development speed and efficiency. Containers allow developers to easily pack, ship and run any application as a lightweight, self-sufficient container that can run virtually anywhere, enabling instant application portability.

37 TRENDS IN DOCKER CONTAINER MONITORING

Between March and May 2018, Gatepoint Research invited selected executives to participate

in a survey called “Trends in Docker Container Monitoring.”

Responders work for firms with a wide range of revenue levels:

7% WORK AT LARGE FIRMS WHOSE REVENUES ARE BETWEEN $500 MILLION AND $1.5 BILLION.

14% WORK IN SMALL OR MID-MARKET FIRMS WITH LESS THAN $500 MILLION IN REVENUES.

79% WORK AT FORTUNE 1000 COMPANIES WITH REVENUES OVER $1.5 BILLION.

100% of responders participated voluntarily; none were engaged using telemarketing.

2% HOLD THE TITLE CxO

Candidates were invited via email, and 100 executives have participated to date.

Survey participants represent firms from a wide variety of industries, including business and consumer services, financial services, healthcare, media, manufacturing (primary, general, high tech), retail and wholesale trade, telecom services, and transportation.

Management levels represented are predominantly IT senior decision makers:

Trend #1: Docker popularity is rising, but it’s still in its infancy at most organizations.

To what extent does your organization use Docker container technology?

Next Steps: When getting started, identify the applications that are not mission-critical but would produce meaningful results that directly impact the business. Once you begin to see—and can report on—initial success, you can make the case to expand containerization to other applications—not to mention incorporate key lessons learned.

Use of Docker container technology is just getting started at 52 percent of surveyed organizations. The rest are almost evenly divided between using the technology outside of production (25 percent) and running containers in production (23 percent).

Trend #2: App development and testing is the primary Docker use case.

Why does your organization use Docker container technology?

Most respondents use Docker container technology for application development and testing (61 percent) and to reduce their existing infrastructure (53 percent).

Next Steps: Because Docker provides instant application portability, it’s a natural fit for application development and testing use cases. But don’t overlook the value it can provide to your broader company cloud initiatives and overall resource efficiency. This is especially important if you’re looking to build a business case for adoption.

Trend #3: Docker provides the most value when it comes to continuous delivery, scalability and resource efficiency.

What is the value of Docker containers to your organization?

More than half of respondents say Docker containers provide continuation integration and delivery (cited by 58 percent), scalability (57 percent) and resource efficiency (53 percent).

Next Steps: When building a business case for application containerization, there are many potential value points to highlight. Focus on the ones that directly address the biggest challenges your company faces, and which will therefore provide the greatest impact to the business. For example, if infrastructure costs are under intense scrutiny, highlight the resource efficiency containers provide. If velocity of innovation is your biggest hurdle, focus on the continuous integration and delivery benefits.

Trend #4: The biggest challenges in Docker monitoring come down to skills.

What problems does your organization face with monitoring Docker containers?

The most prevalent issue with monitoring Docker containers is the gap in skills, 48 percent of respondents say. It’s difficult to determine the root cause of issues, too, say 30 percent, and 24 percent say they lack the tools to monitor.

Next Steps: When it comes to people, processes and technology, the culture and people aspect is often the biggest hurdle. Identify existing resources that have the capability and career drive to expand their skill set through training. And supplement the team with specialists that can oversee the orchestration and automation for the entire pipeline. Also look into implementing automation and self-service delivery, which will help to improve the rate of adoption, deployment and overall IT efficiencies.

Trend #5: The business impact of Docker container performance is largely unmeasured today.

How do Docker container performance problems affect your business?

More than half of respondents are not monitoring Docker container performance problems for business impact yet, but those who are experience sub-optimal service (17percent), have deployment delays (18 percent) and are suffering from longer triage times (19 percent).

Next Steps: For your application containerization initiatives, make sure you set objectives and define measures of success that will effectively demonstrate the business impact. IT operations will care about availability and cost optimization, developers want efficiency and performance of services, and business stakeholders are focused on business operations and customer experience. Understand your audience. But as with any metric, if you can’t equate it to a specific business result, it will fall on deaf ears.

Trend #6: Complete visibility of container performance is the biggest motivator for organizations.

What would motivate your organization to adopt or enhance Docker container monitoring technology?

Complete visibility would motivate 56 percent of respondents to adopt or enhance Docker container monitoring technology, 48 percent would look forward to analytics, and 41 percent say flexible monitoring approaches are a primary motivation.

Next Steps: Monitoring containers provides a new level of complexity and introduces a proliferation of objects, services and metrics that need to be tracked and monitored. To do so requires modern monitoring tools that enable intelligent visualization and analytics that can surface KPIs and avert alert storms; correlations across hosts, containers and applications; and automatic mapping and maintenance of telemetry data to track when containers move.
