K/levoglucosan ratio is higher in the flaming state than in the smoldering state. In the literature, only fewstudies have reported the K to levoglucosan ratio under controlled fire conditions, such as flaming or smoldering state. Gao et al. (2003) found that the Kþ to levoglucosan ratios are about 33 and 0.2-0.6 for the smoldering phase in savanna fires. Kundu et al., 2010 found ratios are about 0.3–1.2, suggesting that biomass burning affecting the Rondônia site is a combination of smoldering and flaming phases

The numbers of 1~3 represent the order of the process. Step 1: An increase in northwesterly wind, behind (to the west) the intensified India-Burma Trough, advects the dryer air from higher-latitude to northern Indochina. Step 2: The dryer condition (i.e., less precipitation and moisture divergence) promotes local biomass burning activities. Step 3: The increase in upward motion, ahead (to the east) of the intensified India-Burma Trough, helps uplift the polluted air to the free troposphere, in which the associated increase in the westerly jet transports the PM10 from northern Indochina to Taiwan.
