#1 Be an early adopter
Try new things. Be one of the first to sign up. Get your user name.
If it doesn’t catch on, you learned something. If it does catch on… you are ahead of the game.
11
#2 Develop skills
Learn a wide variety of skills. They all contribute to a more well rounded experience and you never know when you might need them.
• Public speaking
• Writing
• Design
• Analytics
• Research
• Economics
• Marketing
• Public relations
12
#3 Think before you post
Before you post…
Make sure you have your facts straight.
Think about who will see your post – don’t post things you wouldn’t want your parents to see. Or a potential boss. Or a college recruiter.
What will people think of you when they see what you post? Posts can last forever online.
Consider how the subject of a post might feel. Be polite and treat others how you want to be treated.
13
#4 Become a creator or curator
What are you interested in? What field would you like to go into?
Create content or write about that field and become an expert.
OR follow what others in the field are doing and link to them… comment on their articles and offer your opinion.
Show that you know what you are talking about.
14
#5 Be transparent
Be honest, open and REAL.
Don’t post as someone you aren’t.
Don’t portray false information online.
Be willing to admit you are wrong.
15
#6 Manage your personal SEO
SEO = search engine optimization: the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines
People turn to the internet for information, and they are using search engines to find it… like Google. What will people find if they Google you?
80% of companies use social media for recruitment; % of these using LinkedIn 95%
Set up your profile in LinkedIn for job hunting.
Create a website for your resume and college applications.
Think before you post!
16
#7 Listen
Pay attention to what people are saying…
17
#7 Listen
… learn from it and respond!
Listening can be the most important skillset… whether you are a company listening to your customers or you are a student listening to instructors, experts and influencers.
