Hillegersberg is located less than five kilometres north of Rotterdam’s city centre. This leafy green community on the water is part of the exciting urban area of Rotterdam, but has the feel of a charming village with beautiful homes. All the more reason for many couples, young families, expats and young professionals to choose this multi-faceted neighbourhood for their home base.
Walk along the Philips Willemstraat as far as you can go, then cross the bridge of the same name over the Rotte river. Take in the little boats moored along the shore. From here, it’s an easy walk or bike ride to the centre of Rotterdam, or you might head the other way along the Rotte for a lovely walk or cycle ride taking you through lots of lovely places. First, you’ll pass the Bergse Voorplas, a popular spot for fans of water sports. The local Scouts use the Bergse lakes to teach their members to sail – wonderful to watch from the shore!
During your walk or bike trip, you’ll also pass by the Bergse woods and the local golf course. And if you want a really long walk or ride, just keep going all the way to the Zevenhuizerplas or Rottemeren. These are great places to walk
your dog, go for a run or get out on your racing bike. On sunny weekends, it’s great fun to discover the area by boat. Rent a boat at the Kralingse Plas, for instance, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings from a lovely new vantage point on the water.

Born in 1554, Philip Willem, Prince of Orange, was the first-born son of William of Orange and Anna van Egmont. His portrait has been used as a source of inspiration for some of the elements in PW Apartments. The pattern of his collar was used as the basis for the logo, for instance. And the entry gate to the car park is literally in the form of his face. Credit goes to Guido Zeck of Kolpa Architects, who is happy to tell us more about how the design for PW Aparments originated.
Philip Willem’s life story can be read in the spectacular entrance hall. The colour of the panel is reproduced in the Desso carpet, which gives the hallway a luxurious, vintage look combining past and present. “When you stand in the hallway, your eye is drawn to the unique lamp hanging from the ceiling. It contributes to the elegance and classic ambience of the interior, and you sense the tall space in an entirely novel way.”
PW Apartments are situated on the Philips Willemstraat. A number of properties here date from the nineteenth century. The street tells a story about life in former times. PW Apartments adds to that story in its own unique way, as befits our own times. Zeck: “We could have imitated the buildings next to the apartment complex, or we could have taken a confrontational approach to the existing properties by making a super modern design. But instead we combined the best of both worlds. That means we used the classic structure of base plinth, middle and top, and then gave it a contemporary look using colours, materials and details of the now. The window frames hark back to the old wooden frames of the adjacent buildings. But by giving them a slimmer profile, they look elegant and modern.”
The floor to ceiling windows of your apartment let in pleasant daylight. Yet you enjoy privacy,
as the windows are narrow. “They are designed for comfort but also contribute to the exterior decoration, along with the French balconies, which have been neatly incorporated into the façade. These unique details lend the building richness and elegance.”
