Nicolas Cage• Nicolas Cage (born Nicholas Kim Coppola; January 7, 1964) is an Oscar-winning American actor, film director and

producer, who currently manages his own production company, Saturn Films.• In order to avoid the appearance of nepotism as the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, he changed his name from

Nicholas Coppola to Nicolas Cage early in his career. The assumed surname is inspired by Marvel Comics character Luke Cage, a streetwise superhero. Since his cameo feature film debut in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, with Sean Penn, Cage has appeared in a wide range of films, both mainstream and offbeat. He tried out for the role of Dallas Winston in his uncle's film The Outsiders, based on S.E. Hinton's novel, but lost to Matt Dillon. He was also in Coppola's film Rumble Fish.

• Cage has been nominated twice for an Academy Award, and won once, for his performance as a suicidal alcoholic in Leaving Las Vegas. His other nomination was for his portrayal of real-life screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and Kaufman's fictional twin Donald in Adaptation. Despite these successes, most of his lower-profile films have performed poorly at the box office compared to his mainstream action/adventure roles. The suspense thriller 8mm (1999) was not a box office success, but is now considered a cult film. In 2005, two offbeat films he headlined, Lord of War and The Weather Man, failed to find a significant audience despite nationwide releases and good reviews for his acting in those roles. Poor reviews for The Wicker Man resulted in low box office sales. The much criticized Ghost Rider (2007), based on the Marvel Comics chararacter, was a significant hit, earning more than $45 million (the top earner) during its opening weekend and over $208 million worldwide through the weekend ending on 25 March 2007. Also in 2007, he starred in Next, which shares the concept of a glimpse into an alternate time track with The Family Man (2000).

Motorola unveils phone made from recycled bottles

• Motorola Inc unveiled a cell phone made of recycled water bottles on Tuesday, hoping to cash in on the trend for environmentally friendly products.

• The company, which dropped to No. 4 in the global handset market in the most recently reported quarter due to a weak product line-up, said the W233 Renew eco-friendly phone would be sold by Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile USA in the current quarter.

• It did not disclose pricing for the phone, which will be showcased at this week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

• Motorola said it was the world's first carbon neutral phone. As well as using recycled materials for the plastic casing, the company also pledged to offset the carbon dioxide used in manufacturing, distribution and operation of the phone through investments in renewable energy sources and reforestation.

• Motorola, which has lost market share by being slow to follow trends such as touchscreens and high-speed data links, also plans to showcase three different items at CES: a relatively large touchscreen tablet phone, a rugged phone, and a rechargeable cable TV remote control with a find feature.

• The Motosurf A3100 touch-control tablet supports short-range, Wi-Fi networks and high-speed cellular connections and can be operated using a stylus, a trackball or touching the screen with fingers.

• The device allows for video conferencing and updating of social network sites, and is to be available in Asia and Latin America during the first quarter, Motorola said. It did not say which carriers had agreed to sell the tablet.

• Motorola said its rugged Tundra VA76r phone, which includes a walkie-talkie style feature, would go on sale on January 13 at AT&T Inc, the biggest U.S. mobile provider.

Forming a Union

• For many members of the 2nd Continental Congress, it was not enough for each state to have its own government.

• They believed that a national government was necessary in order to hold the country together.

What other reasons besides holding the country together can you think of for creating a central government?

Concerns

• Many people disagreed as they worried that a central government would be too powerful.

• On 12 June 1776, Congress appointed a committee of Thirteen, this group was assigned to create a national constitution.

Articles of Confederation

• Committee members met for a month to discuss and draft the new document, called the Articles of Confederation.

• Under the Articles, a new Confederation Congress would become the central government.

• Each state would have one vote in the congress

• The national government did not have a president or court system.

Confederation Congress

• Confederation Congress had only limited powers.

• It could make coins and borrow money.

• It could negotiate and make treaties with other countries and American Indians.

• Congress could also settle disputes between states and ask states for money and soldiers.

• However, it could not force the states to provide money or troops, even in an emergency.

John Dickenson called the Articles“a firm league of friendship,” what does he mean?

Ratification• The 2nd Continental

Congress passed the Articles on 15 Nov, 1777. Then it sent them to each state legislature for ratification, or official approval.

• All 13 states had to ratify the Articles before the new government could take effect.

• Conflicts to territory in the west slowed the process. It was finally approved in March 1781.

Would you ratify the Articles?Explain you answer.

Northwest Territory• The new central government

had to decide what to do with the western lands now under its control.

• It also had to raise money to pay war debts.

• The congress hoped to solve both problems by selling western land to the public.

• The Land Ordinance of 1785 which split land into townships of 36 square miles. Or 36 lots of 640 acres each. One lot was set aside for public school, and another 4 lots saved for war veterans, the rest were sold to the public.

Northwest Ordinance of 1787

• Congress passed the NW Ordinance of 1787. The ordinance created the Northwest Territory, which included the area that is now Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin

• The NW Ordinance also created a system for bringing new states into the Union.

Page 16: 7 Jan 2009 Actor Weatherman Ghost Rider Nicolas Cage 1964-

New States

• Congress agreed to divide the NW territory into several smaller territories, each of which had a governor appointed by Congress.

• When the territory reached 60,000, its settlers could draft their own constitution.

• The people could then ask Congress for permission to join the Union as a state.

Do you see any problems with this method of creating a new state?

In Addition• The Ordinance also had a

Bill of Rights.• It required that public

education be provided for the citizens of the region.

• It also stated that “There shall be neither slavery nor involuntary servitude[forced labor] in the territory.”

• This was because Thomas Jefferson wanted to end slavery.
