The way we see the problem is the problem

The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were when we created the problem

PROBLEM

Page 5: 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

Aesop’s fable of the goose and the golden egg

P = PRODUCTION (production of desired results-the golden eggs)

PC = PRODUCTION CAPABILITY (the ability or asset that produces the golden eggs-the goose)

Lack of “P/PC BALANCE”

The 7 Habits Paradigm

Page 7: 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

PARADIGMParadigm = model, example

For Ptolemy, the Earth was the centre of universe. But Copernicus created a paradigm shift by placing the Sun at the centre of universe

Paradigm shifts move us from one way of seeing the world to another

India today is the fruit of paradigm shift. It had been under the kings’ rule for over centuries. Then a different paradigm developed- government of the people, for the people, by the people

HABIT 1

BE PROACTIVEBE PROACTIVE

Page 10: 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

PROACTIVE=step up and do something to solve a problem before it becomes an issue

Being reactive is described as reacting to stimulus without thinking. Animals behave like this.

Being proactive means that unlike animals, humans are able to create a pause between stimulus and response. It is during this pause that humans can choose their response. The response you choose is based on your character development. The better your character is developed, the better your response will be

Page 11: 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

Proactive people- don’t blame circumstances, conditions or conditioning of their behavior

Reactive people- affected by their social environment, by the “social weather.” When people treat them well, they feel well; when people don’t, they become defensive or protective. Reactive people build their emotional lives around the behavior of others, empowering the weaknesses of other people to control them

Page 12: 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

REACTIVE LANGUAGE PROACTIVE LANGUAGEThere’s nothing I can do Let’s look at our alternatives

That’s just the way I am I can choose a different approach

He makes me so mad I control my own feelings

They won’t allow that I can create an effective presentation

I have to do that I will choose an appropriate response

I can’t I choose

I must I prefer

I f only I will

HABIT 2

BEGIN WITH THEEND IN MIND

BEGIN WITH THEEND IN MIND

Page 14: 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND = start with a clear understanding of your destinationBased on the principle that all things are created twice:

(i) Mental or first creation(ii) Physical or second creation

Leadership is the first creation; Management is the second creation.Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things. Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall

IDENTIFYING YOUR CENTRE

Page 16: 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

Almost all of the world-class athletes and other peak performers are visualizers. They see it; they feel it; they experience it before they actually do it. TheyBEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND!!!

HABIT 3

PUT FIRSTTHINGS FIRST

PUT FIRSTTHINGS FIRST

Page 18: 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE
Page 19: 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

Its all about TIME MANAGEMENT

Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least.

Common denominator of success = PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST

By focusing on important, not urgent matters you will become proactive

Page 22: 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

1. Win/Lose: I get my way; you don’t get yours. Most people have been in this mentality since birth.

2. Lose/Win: I lose; you win. Such people are usually quick to please.

3. Lose/Lose: I lose; you lose. This results when two or more determined, stubborn, ego-invested individuals interact.

4. Win: People of this attitude don’t necessarily want to lose. A person with the Win mentality thinks in terms of securing his own ends—and leaving it to others to secure theirs.

5. Win/Win: It’s not your way or my way; it’s a better way, a higher way.

Page 23: 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

WHICH OPTION IS BEST

It depends !!!

Most situations, in fact, are part of an interdependent reality, and then Win/Win is really the only viable

alternative of the five

A good teacher will assess the class before teaching.

A good student will understand before he applies.

A good parent will understand before evaluating or judging.

A good engineer will understand the forces, the stresses at work, before designing the bridge.

Understanding is the key to good judgment

Page 28: 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

Diagnose before you prescribeHearing but ignoringPretending to listen (“Yes”, “Oh”, “I see..”)Selective listening (Choose only what we want to

hear)Attentive listening, without evaluation

(taking lecturer notes)Emphatic listening (with intent to understand the other party) - DON’T think of how you are going to respond when listening. The more deeply we understand other people, the more we appreciate them, the more reverent we feel about them.

HOW TO UNDERSTAND..!!!

Is it logical that two people can disagree and that both can be right?

It’s not logical: it’s psychological. And it’s very real…

Some see the young lady; some see the old woman. We’re all looking at the same picture, and both of us are right. We see the same black lines, the same white spaces. But we interpret them differently because we’ve been conditioned to interpret them differently.

Knowing that the picture can be seen in different ways is SYNERGY

SHARPEN THE SAWSHARPEN THE SAW

HABIT 7

Page 38: 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE
Page 39: 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

Taking time to sharpen the saw is a Quadrant II activity

Personal P/PC must be pressed upon

This is the single most powerful investment we can ever make in life—investment in ourselves, in the only instrument we have with which to deal with life and to contribute. We are the instruments of our own performance, and to be effective, we need to recognize the importance of taking time regularly to sharpen the saw in all four ways

Even in the Bible’s TEN COMMANDMENTS, there is a commandment to rest one day in seven
