Another Piratical WeddingThe moment the Pirate

Ship Black Raven left herslip, it seemed as if the sto-rybook wedding Eve andDan had expected wasgoing under. The heavensopened and let forth a typi-cal Florida afternoon stormcomplete with lighteningand thunder, driving rainand foreboding skies. Butstill the Black Raven setsail with the steady handsof her captain keeping thegalleon out of the worst ofthe weather.

And then, as if some power had noticed the loveemanating from the two, the clouds rolled back and thesun came out. Blue skies and beautiful sun shonedown on the drenched decks, drying them in recordtime. Eve and Dan were beckoned to the forecastlewhere Oly Mackerel was waiting for them. The twohad decided to wed aboard the fine ship, and not eventhe weather could stop that passion. With a small con-tingent of family watching, vows were said with love, and rings were exchanged with devotion. The guestsaboard shouted their approval and the two lovebirdswere given a piratical salute with saber and cutlass atthe ready.

While the Black Raven sailed home, the newlywedded couple was entertained with songs and jokes. The beautiful afternoon was a sure sign that their lifetogether would only be blessed with good tidings. Tothat, the crew of the Black Raven wish nothing but thebest to Eve and Dan McKay, grateful they allowed usthe privilege and honor of hosting their wedding forthem.

The Battle of Bloody MoseOne in a series of historic features as St. Augustine prepares for

its 450th Anniversary in 2015.Predawn, June 26, 1740, both the wisdom of

Spanish Governor Manuel Montiano in establishingthis northern outpost and refuge for escaped slaves, and their fighting will against the hated British, wouldbe tested.

Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose - FortMose (Mo-SAY),was established two years earlier as amatter of both religious pressure and military expedi-ency. It answered the moral dictates of the CatholicChurch, and would weaken the economy of the Britishcolonies.

That early morning of June 26, Fort Mose wasoccupied by British and Scottish forces after beingabandoned to the security of St. Augustine’s Castillo.General James Oglethorpe, founder and governor ofthe British colony of Georgia, was poised to seize theSpanish colony of St. Augustine.

Governor Montiano saw recapture of Fort Moseas key to defeating Oglethorpe’s plans. Gathering hisofficers, including Fort Mose’s Commander, CaptainFrancisco Menendez, a surprise attack in the predawnhours was planned.

Spanish soldiers, black militia, and nativeYamassee auxiliaries made up a 300-man force that“swept over (Fort Mose) with such impetuosity that itfell with a loss of 68 dead and 34 prisoners,” Montianolater wrote.

“At length they came on again sword in handand entered the gate. At the same time another partyentered one of the breaches so that the fort was at once

full of Spaniards, it being then about half an hourbefore the day,” a surviving British soldier recounted.

The attack came to be known to the British as“Bloody Mose,” and successfully helped end Georgia’sinvasion of Florida.

The black militiamen rebuilt Fort Mose in 1752,and it prospered until 1763, when Spain ceded Floridato Britain by treaty. Its commander, CaptainMenendez, and black residents of Fort Mose - know-ing slavery would return under the British - fled toCuba with most of the Spanish citizens, where theyformed a new community, Ceiba Mocha, in theMatanzas province. Menendez is believed to have diedin Havana.

“That’s wonderful,” the artist exclaimed. “What’sthe bad news?”

“The guy was your doctor.”
