First National Anthem written at St.Augustine

One in a series of historic features as St. Augustine prepares forits 450th Anniversary in 2015.

July 4, 1781, American patriots from SouthCarolina and New Jersey, including three SouthCarolina signers of the United States Declaration ofIndependence, were imprisoned at Fort St. Marks, theformer Castillo de San Marcos before the British occu-pation of St. Augustine by treaty in 1763.

The American Revolution is nearing its end. St.Augustine and Pensacola, designated the 14th and 15thBritish colonies, were the last remaining loyaliststrongholds, their populations swelled not only withpatriot prisoners but as well loyalist refugees from thenorthern colonies.

While there was bitterness between patriots andloyalists, Charles Reynolds, recounting the era in his1887 History of St. Augustine, wrote:

“The Patriot prisoners … fared well in British cus-tody. Dr. Andrew Turnbull has loaned them his Englishnewspapers—little consolation for American rebelshere—and local businessman Jesse Fish sent orangesand lemons from his world-famous grove on St.Anastasia Island.

Pirates Duel on the RiverThe Pirate Ship Black

Raven spent the 4th of Julyholiday in an epic, life-or-death duel with a localrestaurant, the pirates resid-ing there and with over 80guests were aboard to seethe historic fight.

Setting sail before sun-set, the Black Raven andher crew headed north onthe Matanzas to find safeharbor at Aunt Kate’srestaurant in Vilano Beach.

A deal had been struck that food was to be handedover for the guests’ pleasure and for the briefest ofmoments, it seemed that deal was solid and true. Buton the approach to the dock at Aunt Kate’s, the fivecrewmen, Oly Mackerel, Jonas Krew, WilliamMayhem, Jumpin’ JoJo and Daisy Drake, got wind of afoul plot. The dock and its treasure were being guardedby pirates! The smooth waters gave way to a warningshot by Master Krew in the hopes of scaring away theinvading pirates from the treasure chest which con-tained the promised feast.

The warning shot having no effect on the pirates atthe docks, Master Krew fired off another round only tohave the echoes of a pistol find the ears of thoseaboard. The renegade pirates had the audacity to fireback! The Black Raven sailed closer only to see thatthe pirates who had been returning their shots werewomen! Two ladies with fiery red hair and swords attheir hips stood guarding the chest. A mighty fightensued, and both sides were at a standstill until JonasKrew proposed an accord that they split the feast andtake aboard the ladies instead of continuing the fight.

With the new lasses aboard, the guests were treatedto the plundered food they’d gathered from Aunt

Kate’s. Exotic fruits, sweet meats and more wereunloaded from the chest for the pleasure of all. Sailinghome, the passengers were serenaded by the youngladies before the ship found a calm stretch of river towatch the city fireworks light off. And such dazzlingcolors and spectacles did you ever see!

With the day coming to an end, the passengers wereset safely home at the city docks and were treated tothe smiles and blessings of the crew they’d watched allevening. From all at Black Raven Adventures, we hopeyou and yours had a wonderful and safe holiday week-end!

in hopes its budget would include necessary funding. With the university takeover comes an annual

appropriation of $650,000 – still not enough to managea $900,000-plus annual program, but the city and uni-versity are developing a partnership in which, it ishoped, the city will continue to manage the ColonialSpanish Quarter and Government House in exchangefor financial support of the program.

The university is expected to maintain the commer-cial rentals while working in educational programs tofurther enhance the heritage programs of the nation’soldest continuously occupied European settlement –the nation’s oldest city.

UF Takes Over Historic PropertiesAfter a decade of management by the city, the

University of Florida has taken over management of34 state-owned historic properties in St. Augustine.

The process began in the 1960s, when city, state, and private investors embarked on a restoration pro-gram in the north end of St. George Street in prepara-tion for the city’s 400th anniversary. Eighteenth centu-ry buildings were restored or recreated on their origi-nal sites, based on historical and archaeologicalresearch.

All those properties were deeded to the state forfuture safekeeping.

The state created a preservation commission tooversee the properties, but with little financial support, the commission relied on commercial rental of theproperties to maintain them. With abolishment of thepreservation board in 1997, city fathers gained a five-year renewable lease to preserve them. Necessaryfunding was always short.

In 2007, after other efforts to get state fundingfailed, the city supported a takeover by the university Doctor’s Order
