11 Futures Language Schools 6th Primary Booklet 2nd Term

Conditional sentences usually consist of two clauses: a conditional clause ( if clause )and a main clause ( result clause ). The result in the main clause is dependent on thecondition in the conditional clause.

General Points

We usually form conditional sentences in one of these basic structures:

If Clause main clause

If I had a car, I would take you.

Main clause if clause

I would take you if I had a car.

If we put the if clause first, we usually separate the clauses by a

comma.

There are four basic conditional sentence patterns where our choice of

tenses depends on the time of the condition ( past, present or future )

and how possible or impossible we think the event is:

Zero conditional: It tells us what always happens in a certain situation.

If your dog is depressed, he probably needs more exercise.

First conditional: it presents a situation which is possible in the future.

If the weather is good, we will go outside.

Second conditional: It presents an imaged or unreal, improbable situation.

If you were a bit nicer, he wouldn’t get so angry.

Page 12: 6th Primary - futuresnet.net

12 Futures Language Schools 6th Primary Booklet 2nd Term

ZERO CONDITIONALThis is also known as the general conditional.

IF + Present Simple Present Simple

If you don’t look after the plants, they die very quickly.

We can use model verbs in either clauses, especially can and may.

o If you can read this, you’re too close

We use the zero conditional to talk about events or situations that can

occur at any time.

o If I eat dairy products, I get red spots on my skin.

We also use it to talk about actions that always have the same results.

o If you use a very hot iron on nylon, it melts.

o If you click here, the game starts.

FIRST CONDITIONALThis is also known as the possible or likely conditional.

IF + Present Simple Future Simple

If the museum charges for entry, a lot of people won’t be able to visit it.

We use the first conditional to describe possible future events or situations

and their results:

o If you go to the party, you’ll meet Alan.

o Ben will buy a new shirt if his shirt isn’t clean.

We can use unless instead of if … ( not, don't, doesn't ) in a conditional clause. Then the verb after unless is always in the affirmative. If you don’t study, you will fail the test.Unless you study, you will fail the test.I’ll go to school tomorrow if I am not sick.I’ll go to school tomorrow unless I’m sick.I won’t go to the party if she doesn’t come.I won’t go to the party unless she comes.

We usually use ‘unless’ toexpress a negative condition. It is similar to ‘if not’.

We won’t go shopping unlessyou finish your homework.

Page 13: 6th Primary - futuresnet.net

13 Futures Language Schools 6th Primary Booklet 2nd Term

SECOND CONDITIONALThis is also known as the impossible or rather impossible

IF + Past Simple would ( or model ) + infinitive

If I were rich, I would buy everyone presents.

We use the second conditional to talk about something that does not apply to

the present and it is rather impossible to happen in the future. It is rather an

imaginary or impossible situation.

o If I were a prime minister, I would make school holidays longer.

o I would fly like Peter Pan if I had wings.

It is also used to talk about something that does not apply to the present, but

it is possible that it will happen in the future.

o If I became an astronaut, I would travel into space.

It is used to give advice.

o It I were you, I wouldn't be so stubborn.

Question Tags are short questions at the end of statements. We mainly use them in speech

when we want to confirm something or when we want to find out if something is true or not.

Cows don’t eat meat, do they?Sharon doesn’t like dancing, does she?You went shopping, didn’t you?

We form a question tag with the auxiliary or model verb of the main sentence

and the appropriate subject pronoun.

Don is leaving now, isn’t he?

She can’t swim, can she?

When the verb of the main sentence is in the present simple, we form the

questions tag with the auxiliary verb ‘do / does’ ad the subject pronoun.

She studies German, doesn’t she?

Ted and Mike live here, don’t they?

When the verb is in the past simple tense, we form the questions tag with the

auxiliary verb ‘did’ ad the subject pronoun.

They paid the bill, didn’t they?

When the sentence is positive, the question tag is negative.

He robbed the bank, didn’t he?

When the sentence negative, the question tag is positive.

She didn’t leave with you, did she?

30 Futures Language Schools 6th Primary Booklet 2nd Term

When the sentence contains a word with a negative meaning like ( never –

hardly – seldom – rarely ), the question tag is positive.

She hardly goes to school, does she?

Some verbs / expressions form question tags differently:

I am aren’t I? * I am tall, aren’t I?

Imperative will / won’t you? * Stop talking, will you?

I have ( got ) haven’t I? * He has got a car, hasn’t he?

I have don’t I? *You have breakfast everyday, don’t you?

There is / are isn’t / aren’t there? * There is a lady in the room, isn’t there?

This / That isn’t it? * This is Tom’s coat, isn’t it?

I am not..>>.> am I ? I am not late, am I ?

He seems hungry, doesn't he?

Oh! Yes. He definitely looks hungry.

How to Form Relative ClausesImagine: a girl is talking to Tom. You want to know who she is and ask a friend whether heknows her. You could say:A girl is talking to Tom. Do you know the girl? That sounds rather complicated, doesn't it? It would be easier with a relative clause: you put bothpieces of information into one sentence. Start with the most important thing – you want to knowwho the girl is.Do you know the girl …As your friend cannot know which girl you are talking about, you need to put in the additionalinformation – the girl is talking to Tom. Use „the girl“only in the first part of the sentence, in thesecond part replace it with the relative pronoun (for people, use the relative pronoun „who“). Sothe final sentence is:Do you know the girl who is talking to Tom?Relative Pronouns

relativepronoun Use example

who subject or object pronoun for people I told you about the woman who livesnext door.

which subject or object pronoun for animals and things Do you see the cat which is lying on theroof?

which referring to a whole sentence He couldn’t read which surprised me.

whose possession for people animals and things Do you know the boy whose mother is anurse?

whomobject pronoun for people, especially in non-defining

relative clauses (in defining relative clauses wecolloquially prefer who)

I was invited by the professor whom Imet at the conference.

thatsubject or object pronoun for people, animals and

things in defining relative clauses (who or which arealso possible)

I don’t like the table that stands in thekitchen.

Subject Pronoun or Object Pronoun?

Subject and object pronouns cannot be distinguished by their forms - who, which, that are used

for subject and object pronouns. You can, however, distinguish them as follows:

If the relative pronoun is followed by a verb, the relative pronoun is a subject pronoun. Subject

pronouns must always be used.

The apple which is lying on the table ……………

If the relative pronoun is not followed by a verb (but by a noun or pronoun), the relative pronoun

is an object pronoun. Object pronouns can be dropped in defining relative clauses, which are then

called Contact Clauses.

The apple (which) George lay on the table …………..

Mum sent an e-mail to Uncle Ben yesterday.

An e-mail was sent to Uncle Ben yesterday.

We use the passive voice: when we want to emphasize the actions rather than the person who did it:

o The new DVD shop was opened last week.

When we don’t know who did the action:

Their house was robbed last night.

When it is obvious who did the action: The thieves have all been arrested. ( by the police )

We change a sentence from the active voice to the passive voice in the followingway. The object of the active sentence becomes the

subject of the passive sentence.

We use verb ( to be ) in the same tense as

the verb in the active sentence.

We use the past participle of the main verb

in the active sentence.

We use by if we want to mention the doer

of the action in the passive sentence.

Tense Active Passive

Present Simple Tom writes the e-mails. The e-mails are written.

Past Simple Meg ate all the apples. All the apples were eaten.

Future Simple Kate will make the bed. The bed will be made.

Kate trains the guide dogs. The guide dogs are trained by

Kate.

Mum made our lunch. Our lunch was made by mum.

It is verb to be that shows the tense in the passive sentence.

The past participle of the main verb never changes.

The poem or the song lyrics

A description of the theme of the poem or song

The Journal will be used to assess your participation in the module and the progress

you make during it. It should also be something of value to yourself as a reflection of

your taste, and something you can share with others. The entries can be of different

lengths. Some examples are given below for your reference.

Journal Entry 1:

I just heard a funny song. It’s really crazy: an old woman swallows a fly. She wants toget rid of the fly so she swallows a spider to catch the fly…and so it goes on until sheswallows a horse! Of course, each verse gets longer as she swallows more things. Hereare the seventh and eighth verses.

There was an old lady who swallowed a cow.

I don’t know how she swallowed a cow!

She swallowed the cow to catch the goat.

She swallowed the goat to catch the dog.

She swallowed the dog to catch the cat.

She swallowed the cat to catch the bird.

She swallowed the bird to catch the spider

That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her.

She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.

But I dunno why she swallowed that fly.

Perhaps she’ll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a horse –

She’s dead, of course.

Excellent ending!

Journal Entry 2:

Sapphire sky; bright sun;School picnics in country parks –Time of youth and joy.

65 Futures Language Schools 6th Primary Booklet 2nd Term

The two poems refer to two different times of year in Hong Kong: the cold seasonand the dry sunny season.

The first haiku belongs to February. The first line sets the mood with itsdescription and the very similar hard sounds of “cold” and “cloudy”. Then we havethe two short strong adjectives “damp and “grey”. There is a pause as we waitfor the rain to fall, and some alliteration (“rain ready”, with “ready” also echoing“cloudy”). I can almost see the low grey cloud and feel the damp air with the firstdrops of cold rain in it. It could be depressing, but it is also a time of happinessbecause of Chinese New Year. After the first two sad lines, the haiku surprises uswith its bright colour and feeling of joy. We enjoy the /b/ and /r/ sounds and the“ready”/“red” echo. The contrast works well.

The second haiku describes late October or early November. I like the adjective“sapphire” (a blue precious stone). This time there is no sudden contrast. Maybethe poem is simply about being young and happy, but I think there may also besadness there (so there is a contrast): the words “time” and “youth” remind usthese things do not last. For some students it is their last year at school. They aregrowing up. Gradually they will stop being young. Joy itself will not last forever.

The many /s/ sounds bind the first two lines together tightly, and the /p/ sound in“picnics” and “parks” create a nice balance.I like these poems because they are simple, talk about Hong Kong and have deepmeaning.

Learning Activity 2Syllables:

1. The lines in traditional English poems are often of nearly the same length in terms of their

number of syllables. For this you need to count the syllables. How many syllables do the following

words have?

Unwilling ……3………

Danced ………………

Congratulations ………………

Basketball ………………

Graduation ………………

Always ………………

2. Read part of a funny poem written by Edward Lear below and count the number of syllables in

each line. Most of the words are one syllable so counting is easy. Write down the number of syllables

in the space provided.

Said the Table to the Chair

“You can hardly be aware

How I suffer from the heat

And from chilblains 1 on my feet. 4

If we took a little walk,

We might have a little talk;

Pray let us take the air 2,”

Said the Table to the Chair. 8

3) Lines of 6 to 10 syllables are the most commonly found in English poetry, but you can find poets

who like short lines and ones who prefer very long ones. Sometimes, a poet may also use both

short and long lines in the same poem to create special literary effects, such as variation in

rhythm or contrast in meaning.

The following poem by Nicholas Gordon consists of very short lines:

On Passing Air

The anonymous poem below has relatively long lines: On a Tired Housewife

Here lies a poor woman who was always tired,

She lived in a house where help wasn't hired:

Her last words on earth were: “Dear friends, I am going

To where there's no cooking, or washing, or sewing, 4

For everything there is exact to my wishes,

For where they don't eat there's no washing of dishes.

I'll be where loud anthems will always be ringing,

But having no voice I'll be quit of the singing. 8

Don't mourn for me now, don't mourn for me never,

I am going to do nothing forever and ever.”

Anonymous

For an example of a poem with an interesting mix of long and short lines, you might like to read

“Overtech” available at:

http://www.daypoems.net/poems/1736.html

And then, relieved

In gut and soul,

Becomes again

A wholesome whole. 12

On passing air

One turns around

To see if any

Heard the sound; 4

Then moves away

To vacate where

Another might

Inhale the air; 8

Learning Activity 3:Rhythm or Beat:

1. English words and sentences have stress. In many poems the stresses are put in a pattern. For example:

Said the Table to the Chair

“You can hardly be aware

How I suffer from the heat

And from chilblains on my feet.”

Every second syllable has a stress so there is a regular beat: loud / soft / loud / soft. Read the poem

very rhythmically and you will be able to tap out the beat on the table.

2. Poems for young children often have strong beats. Try to read the following aloud and make

them very rhythmical.

Diddle, diddle, dumpling

My son John

Went to bed with his

Trousers on

One shoe off, and one shoe on,

Diddle, diddle dumpling,

My son John. ( lo u d / s o f t / loud/soft)

A day without a friend is like

A meadow turned to sand,

A garden turned to weeds and dust,

An ocean far from land. 8

Time enters a slow-motion zone,

Repeating endlessly

The tearful grimace of the heart

Till you return to me. 12

II. Comprehension: ( 4 marks )Read and then answer the questions:

I worked for a newspaper, which was doing research about English language students. For the

research project they asked me to learn a new language in two months. The language I decided to learn

was French. My grandfather was French, but I couldn’t practice with him in the past. I went to France to

speak the language fluently.

I studied at a language school in London for two months. I used to think that learning languages

was easy for me, but after French I changed my mind. I found it incredibly difficult. The grammar was

extremely complicated and the words were not like English, so it was hard to remember them. For

instance, I thought that “eat” is more or less an international word, but in French it is “manger.” The

verb changes for every subject pronoun, so it is very difficult to form full sentences.

As soon as my course finished in London, I went to Paris. I started practicing what I learnt. It was

both difficult and easy. I wanted to do three things: take a taxi and go to an address without getting lost;

order the right food and drink; talk on the phone about buying a plane ticket. I could take a taxi and go to

the address; I could order the right food. The most difficult thing was talking on the phone. I couldn’t

understand a word she said and we talked for over half an hour arranging my flight. All in all, my trip to

Paris was fun but can I say that I have learnt French well? Not yet.

Answer:1) Why did the newspaper want her to learn a language?

…………………………………………………………………………………………………..

2) Which language did she choose? Why?

…………………………………………………………………………………………………..

3) Why was it difficult to learn a language?

…………………………………………………………………………………………………..

1. What did she do in Paris?

a) practice the language b) meet her dad c) ask for help

2. What was the most difficult thing?

a) ordering food b) talking on a phone c) giving directions to a taxi

Once upon a time there was a shepherd boy, who was sitting on the hillside watching the village sheep. However, he was bored, so he decided to play a trick on the villagers. He screamed at the top of his voice, "Wolf!Wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep!" The villagers came running up the hill as fast as they could to help him.But when they arrived, they couldn't see a wolf. The boy laughed his head off, when he saw their angry faces."Don't cry 'wolf'," said the villagers, "when there is no wolf!" And off they went back down the hill.

The young boy, who thought this was a great game, decided to do the same thing again a couple of dayslater. He cried out, "Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep!" To his delight, he watched the villagers run upthe hill to help him. When the villagers saw that there was no wolf they said, in a very unfriendly voice, "Don'tcry 'wolf' when there is no wolf!" But the boy just smiled and watched them go grumbling down the hill yetagain.

Later, he saw a real wolf, which was prowling about his flock. Frightened, he leaped to his feet andscreamed as loudly as he could, "Wolf! Wolf!" The villagers heard him calling for help, but they thought it wasjust another one of his tricks, and so they ignored him.

In the evening, everyone wondered why the shepherd boy hadn't returned to the village with their sheep,so they went up the hill to look for him. They found him weeping, but they couldn't see their sheep. They askedthe boy why he was crying and where their sheep were. He said, "There really was a wolf here! The sheep haverun away! I cried, "Wolf! But nobody came to help me."

An old man tried to comfort the boy as they walked back to the village. "We'll help you look for the lostsheep in the morning," he said, putting his arm around the boy.

The moral of the story is, that "Nobody believes a liar...even when he is telling the truth!"
