Students will first be expected to create a sketch of their perfect monster out of pencil and color. Their sketch is to act as a blueprint for the rest of their project as they begin creating their three-dimensional work out of paper maché. Students will utilize their problem solving and critical thinking skills to work out their design problems as they begin to work with paper maché, and by forcing students to transfer their design from a two-dimensional sketch into a three-dimensional object, students will continue to practice and refine their art constructing skills. Standards: 25.A.1d: Identify the elements of line, shape, space, color and texture; the principles of repetition and pattern; and the expressive qualities of mood, emotion, and pictorial representation. 25.A.3e: Analyze how the elements and principles can be organized to convey meaning through a variety of media and technology. 26.B.2d: Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create works of visual art using problem solving, observing, designing, sketching and constructing. 26 .A.3e: Describe how the choices of tools/technologies and processes are used to create specific effects in the arts. Objectives: Students will: o Utilize their sketching skills to create a colored blueprint of their monster design to use throughout their paper maché process. o Transform their two-dimensional sketch into a three-dimensional object utilizing their problem solving and critical thinking skills. o Solidify their understanding of their design by applying their knowledge of paper maché techniques discussed in class to create a solid sculpture.

Aim/Goal: The “Monster” sculpture lesson is designed to help 6th grade students begin to think in all three dimensions while still creating an object that is of their own creative design. Standards:

§ 25.A.1d: Identify the elements of line, shape, space, color and texture; the principles of repetition and pattern; and the expressive qualities of mood, emotion, and pictorial representation.

§ 25.A.3e: Analyze how the elements and principles can be organized to convey meaning through a variety of media and technology.

§ 26.B.2d: Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create works of visual art using problem solving, observing, designing, sketching and constructing.

§ 26.A.3e: Describe how the choices of tools/technologies and processes are used to create specific effects in the arts.

Objectives:

§ Students will: o Utilize their sketching skills to create a colored blueprint of their monster design to

use throughout their paper maché process. o Transform their two-dimensional sketch into a three-dimensional object utilizing

their problem solving and critical thinking skills. o Solidify their understanding of their design by applying their knowledge of paper

maché techniques discussed in class to create a solid sculpture.

Materials:

§ Monster Sculptures PowerPoint § Teacher Exemplar § Student digital sketches § Newspapers § Magazines § Paper Towel § Masking Tape § Wire § Scissors § Paintbrushes § Paint (various colors) § Placemats (for easier clean-up)

Vocabulary:

o Monsters o Paper Maché o Sketching/Blueprint o Three-Dimensional sculpture

Related Artists & Artworks:

o Monster Examples from popular culture o Monsters, Inc., Cookie Monster, Monster Book (from Harry Potter), etc.

o Paper maché examples from previous students o Teacher Exemplar

Procedure

1. The teacher begins class with the PowerPoint presentation introducing the topic of creating Monsters.

2. After the PowerPoint, students are instructed to begin on a detailed sketch of what their “perfect” monster would be. The students are told that they should be in color because the finishing step of their monster creation is painting their sculptures and they want to have a preliminary plan.

3. On day two, students were expected to finish their sketch started the day before. a. The teacher then gave a demo on how they were expected to construct their

foundation for their paper maché sculpture. i . The teacher showed how they were expected to mold their newspaper into

the design they wanted and then how to apply tape to help hold the shape of their newspaper.

b. Once the teacher had approved the student’s sketch, the students were able to begin working on their foundation for their paper maché sculpture using crumpled up newspaper and masking tape using the techniques they had learned during the demo.

4. students were given a paper maché demo where the teacher demonstrated the two proper ways to apply paper to their foundation.

a. Once where they apply the paste with their fingers to the pieces of paper, and one where they dip their paper into the paste and use their fingers to wipe away the excess before attaching the piece to their work.

b. The teacher also noted that students should utilize the 3-2-1 rule when working with paper maché.

i . The 3-2-1 stands for 3 layers of newspapers, 2 layers of magazine papers, and 1 layer of paper towel to complete their shell of paper maché (students should also be advised to not rush steps, they will not dry in time and mold will result on their project).

5. Students were then able to begin constructing their paper maché monster. 6. After their piece has had a chance to dry, students were given a quick demo on some painting

techniques using different types of brushes (like fan brushes for feathers). 7. Students were then able to paint their project to finish their piece.

Closing

o Teacher will announce that they must let their pieces dry completely before they were able to add additional layers of paper maché; otherwise their work will mold over.

o Students will continue to work on their paper maché pieces for a few days until everyone has completed their 3-2-1 layers.

Assessment Strategies For their monster sculptures, students will be assessed according to their blueprint they designed at the beginning of the project. The project will be listed out of 50 possible points, with points being taken off for parts missing, pieces not attached properly, or poor construction.
