Weekly Wisdom

Session ThreeWhat do you thirst for most in life?

Some people thirst for fame and recognition, other search for acceptance, wanting to be liked. Will these experiences bring us fulfillment in life? Underlying all these desires is a deeper thirst; a thirst for God. That is what the Samaritan woman discovers when she encounters Christ at the well.

Like he did with the Samaritan woman, Jesus wants to draw out our deepest thirst, which is for Him. And only in the desire for God will our hearts be at rest.

Come join us between the Masses or on Monday night as we view this short video from Edward Sri and explore the Gospel of John.

**Also, on Tuesday night at 6:45 p.m. we will continue our Lenten Soup Supper with another video from, “No Greater Love, A Biblical Walk Through Christ’s Passion.” Soup is served at 6:45 p.m. and the video will follow at 7:15 p.m.

Great video, great meal and great people…Join us first for 6:15 p.m. Mass.

All Are Welcome!

It is Not Too Late to Join Us!

The Women’s Book Circle meets the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. We will be reading “The Confessions of a Mega Pastor” by Allen Hunt for our meeting on Thursday, March 19. All are welcome!

The Women’s Scripture Circle meets the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. We have begun a new study from the “Walking With Purpose” Program called “Beholding His Glory” Synopsis: As we look at Old Testament people and events, we’ll encounter problems that only Christ will solve, needs that only He will satisfy, and promises that only He can deliver. This nine-lesson study, “Beholding His Glory,” shows us how all Scripture points us to our Redeemer, Jesus Christ. We’ll learn to recognize and appreciate God’s plan for our own lives.

For more information on the faith sharing circles, contact Marie Sexton at 718-4147.

Have a blessed week, Your AFF Team

2020 Annual Diocesan Appeal:Building Our Family of Faith

In honor of this landmark year for our Diocese, Bishop Knestout has announced a special Bicentennial Challenge to raise $5 million through this year’s Annual Appeal.

Reaching this challenge will allow the Diocese to fund three key priorities: the education of our youth, care for our elderly poor, and support for our mission parishes. In addition, this success will flow back to all parishes and provide significant boosts to all the ministries supported by the Appeal.

It is with these goals in mind that we hope our parishioners will join with us this year in making a pledge to the Appeal to help us launch our Diocese into the next 200 years.

DIOCESAN COMMEMORATIVE BOOK: The Diocese of Richmond, in celebrating its Bicentennial Year, has created a beautiful commemorative book, “Shine Like Stars,” which highlights our two-hundred-year history with text, pictures, and profiles of our nearly 150 parishes. You can purchase this commemorative book for $40.00, after Mass in the Family Room or the Parish Office during the week.

WINTER SHELTER THANK YOU!Dear Church of the Holy Family, Once again the wonderful people of Holy Family worked together to host the Winter Shelter program for seven days and nights. The list of people to thank is extensive and varied. Thank you to our dinner providers: RCIA Team and Haiti Committee, the Youth of our Church, the Parish Choir, the Pastoral Parish Council, Finance Council, the Wives of the Knights of Columbus, and the families (especially the Rusch Family) that volunteered on Holy Family Night. Thank you to our Knights of Columbus who made a hot, yummy breakfast each morning before our guests departed for the day. Thank you to all the Parishioners who laundered towels and linens each day, as well as to those serving as chaperones by staying overnight with our guests. Thank you to our entertainers (some from other churches) who provided lively entertainment during and after dinner, especially fellow parishioner Matthew Weinstein and Bryce Miller, music coordinator for Star of the Sea Parish. And finally, thank you to our wonderful Christian Formation students and teachers! Grades kindergarten to 2nd for the tasty trail mix for our guests, grades 3 and 4 for the lovely centerpieces on our dining tables, and grade 5 for the wonderful cards of welcome for our guests. Thank you everyone, Fr. Rene, and Staff for all the help and support! Winter Shelter Chairpersons

The Civil War and the Diocese of RichmondOn the eve of the Civil War, the Diocese of Richmond was caught up in the increasing tensions between the Northern and the Southern states. Bishop McGill was in communion with the Catholic Bishops of the North but along with other bishops in the South expressed support of the Southern cause. McGill acknowledged that slavery was the basis of the Southern States’ action to secede but he did not see slavery as a “mortal sin.” He was critical of some of the tactics used by abolitionists but stressed that “slaves” must be treated with respect and he encouraged their baptism.

In April 1861, the Commonwealth of Virginia seceded from the Union. In June, fifty counties in western Virginia, some of which were part of the Diocese of Richmond seceded from Virginia and were admitted to the Union as the new state of West Virginia. Thus the Diocese was divided between the two warring sides. When Richmond became the capital of the Confederacy, Bishop McGill became an ardent supporter of the South. Many Catholics in the Diocese, although not slave owners, took up arms in support of the Confederacy.

During the war Catholic priests and nuns ministered to those in hospitals and on the battlefield, both Confederate and Union casualties. Parishioners prayed for those wounded or killed in the war. Damage to churches was not extensive. After the war, Bishop McGill had to rebuild the Diocese and faced the prospects of Reconstruction. One of his greatest responsibilities was ministering to and evangelizing the newly emancipated African-Americans.

Bishop McGill participated in the First Vatican Council (1869-1870) that defined Papal Infallibility. Soon after he returned from the Council he became ill and died in 1872 at the age of 62. Bishop McGill guided the Diocese of Richmond for 22 years through difficult and divisive times. He left the Diocese more unified, well respected in Virginia, and faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

“CREATION CARE CORNER:” What is dirty electricity and should I care?

(This article is a continuation of one published January 19)The wiring systems in most buildings use 60 Hertz AC electricity. For a long time, this was a good system because nearly all electrical devices used this same even and consistent electrical flow. However, many modern electronic devices changed everything. Devices such as cell phone chargers, energy efficient light bulbs, computers, TVs, dimmer switches, and other electronics needed more, or different modes of receiving and delivering electricity than the electricity that comes from most wall plugs. Methods were developed to accommodate modern devices. One outcome of these developments was the creation of “dirty electricity” (DE) an unusable electromagnetic energy that is created by the electrical devices as they operate. Caused by interruptions in the even consistent flow of 60-Hertz AC power, DE travels through wires and electrical systems in homes and buildings. These interruptions result in voltage spikes, or surges, as well as frequency variations that combine to form a complex and potentially harmful electromagnetic field. As DE spreads, it emits EMF radiation.

DE can even spread to the outside of buildings as stray voltage. It has been reported that cows exposed to ground current “dance” (lift their feet) as they are trying to break the flow of electricity through their body coming from the ground. Once cows are unable to stand, they are no longer useful to the farmer.

In 2012, over 200 international scientists published the “Bioinitiative Report,” whose primary goal was to alert the public, and major world organizations to the dangers of EMF’s. Over 1,000 studies were cited showing even low-level exposure to this radio frequency radiation is related to dozens of diseases and biological harm to the human body especially at the cellular level.

We lead an easy life because of modern devices and welcome ways to protect it frequently being open to occasions to sin. Despite our fallen state, we have the responsibility to care for the earth and its creatures. So how are we doing? We’ve polluted the waters, destroyed forests, poisoned the land, and it looks as if we may be wiping out pollinating bee colonies with the EMFs that interfere with the bee’s directional systems. Could it be true that, “No more bees, no more pollination … no more men!” ...goodbye easy life?

2020 WINTER WEAR CLOTHING DRIVE IS OVER

The 2020 Winter Clothing Drive is now in the books. MANY THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO IT. Your Knights of Columbus (Council 10804) sorted and delivered over 6,800 items of clothing for men, women, and children (e.g. coats, sweat suits, hats, scarves, gloves, boots, socks, towels and blankets) to 31 local organizations in four cities (Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and Norfolk). Three other parishioners also participated in the project. The group met on 24 separate days. Because the intended recipients have specific needs, all the clothes were sorted by type. For example, some places only need clothing for men, some need only women’s clothing, others want women and children’s items, some want finer clothing for people to dress for job interviews, while others need clothing for people living on the street. The group also had to ensure that the clothing was serviceable. In order to get the donated clothing out to those in need as quickly as possible, the involved Knights promptly made 78 separate deliveries.

This was the 23rd year that Council 10804 has collected clothing. It started as a modest coat drive that was conducted in January. Now it covers January and February and involves all types of clothing to help a wide variety of people. This year deliveries were made to such places as:

Barry Robinson Center (helping children) Norfolk Catholic Worker (helping homeless who gather around fires in 55 gallon drums near the wall of a cemetery) Norfolk Cloverleaf Apartments (helping residents of a low income housing building) Virginia Beach For KIDS (helping children) Norfolk Gosnold Apartments (helping residents of low-income housing building) Norfolk H.E.R. Shelter (helping abused women and their children) Portsmouth Heron’s Landing (helping residents of low income housing building) Chesapeake Judeo- Christian Outreach (helping men and women in transitional housing) Virginia Beach Loving and Caring Ministries (helping abused and homeless women and children) Virginia Beach OASIS (helping the homeless and less fortunate) Portsmouth Onesimus House (helping ex-prisoners in a half way house) Chesapeake People in Need (helping people living outside) Virginia Beach Safe Harbor (helping women dress for job interviews) Virginia Beach Seton House for Boys (helping runaway, homeless, or in crisis boys) Virginia Beach Seton House for Girls (helping runaway, homeless, or in crisis girls) Virginia Beach South Bay Apartments (helping resident of low income housing building) Portsmouth St. Columba Ecumenical Ministries (helping homeless and less fortunate) Norfolk Star of the Sea Outreach (helping people living outdoors) Virginia Beach The Knights kept records of the specific types of items being delivered to each entity.

With each delivery the recipient was given a listing of all the specific items being delivered with the appropriate letterhead so the recipients would know that the deliveries were coming from the Church of the Holy Family.
