Units from 69th ADA have been deploying regularly through- out the Central Command area of operations, even though many units’ deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan have slowed. The headquarters element of the “Lightning Strike” Brigade left at the beginning of the year and is expected to return in the next few months. The headquarters battery decid- ed to take some time to meet with Families to discuss challenges that may present themselves when their loved ones return from over- seas after several months of being separated. Capt. Matthew Allen, com- mander of HHB, 69th ADA, advised Families to stay flexible as they ease back into the rhythm of life here at the Great Place. Some spouses who have been eagerly awaiting the return of their Soldiers have visions and expectations of chocolate candies and rose petals paving the path to the bedroom, but this is not often a reality that most couples experience, said Chaplain (Maj.) Vernon Shackelford, the 69th ADA Bde. chaplain. “Communication is key,” said Doris Arnett, a mobilization and deployment specialist. Couples can avoid being let down, if their expectations don’t match reality, by simply commu- nicating with their deployed Fam- ily member during the months leading up to their return. It is important for each person to express what he or she would like to happen during the first day or few days of redeployment, Arnett added. Improvements and advances in technology have made commu- nication easier between Soldiers and Families over the past sev- eral years. In the past decades, communication has evolved from mostly written communication to being able to talk over the phone, or even have a face-to-face con- versation over webcams. Service members and Families have been able to take advantage of this as wireless internet has become more common in many deployed areas. Not only is redeployment an adjustment for the adults involved, but it is an adjustment for the children as well. Parents need to communicate with their children before the other parent returns to address any concerns that the child may be having. Reintegration with children can sometimes be just as difficult, if not more difficult, than with adults, Arnett said. “You have to be sensitive, kind, caring and compassionate,” Shackelford said. It takes effort to make the tran- sition as smooth as possible for everyone involved. The service members must take the time and patience to readjust back into their roles in the household with the children, chores and respon- sibilities. If Families are finding it hard to reintegrate with their returned Soldier, there are many agencies and people on post with the abil- ity to help with the transition. Some places people can turn for assistance are the unit’s military Family life consultant, chaplain, Army Community Service, Mili- tary OneSource, and, of course, the Soldier’s chain of command. “(Redeployment) is not an event, it’s a process,” Arnett said. Families must ask “What’s going to work for us now?” People change over time, Arnett added, and what worked before the deployment may not work the same way upon return. 69th ADA Families prepare for Soldiers’ redeployment transition Capt. Family members from Head-quarters and Headquarters Bat-tery, 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade gathered at Club Hood Aug. 12 to receive advice and information about their Soldiers’ redeployments, which will take place in the coming months.

Units from 69th ADA have been deploying regularly through-out the Central Command area of operations, even though many units’ deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan have slowed. The headquarters element of the “Lightning Strike” Brigade left at the beginning of the year and is expected to return in the next few months.

The headquarters battery decid-ed to take some time to meet with Families to discuss challenges that may present themselves when their loved ones return from over-seas after several months of being separated.

Capt. Matthew Allen, com-mander of HHB, 69th ADA, advised Families to stay flexible as they ease back into the rhythm of life here at the Great Place.

Some spouses who have been eagerly awaiting the return of their Soldiers have visions and

expectations of chocolate candies and rose petals paving the path to the bedroom, but this is not often a reality that most couples

experience, said Chaplain (Maj.) Vernon Shackelford, the 69th ADA Bde. chaplain.

“Communication is key,” said Doris Arnett, a mobilization and deployment specialist.

It is important for each person to express what he or she would like to happen during the first day or few days of redeployment, Arnett added.
